De Javu

I now live and have lived in Greensboro,Maryland for twenty some years.A rural community on the eastern shore of Maryland.
Not all that far physically from our nations capital but in reality a different world. A place of hunters and fisherman and farmers. Just good old boys never doing no harm. I settled here after retiring from the Navy. In a lot of ways it reminded me of my hometown,East Hampton,Long Island,New York. A small town on the eastern end of Long Island. A rural community of fishermen and farmers. Hunters too lived there but they  hunted mostly waterfowl. Not too far from New York City but a whole different world.
Yesterday as I was out I rode past a local deli and ice cream shop. They have erected a brand new electronic sign. One that shows pictures and has the scrolling lettering. Displays time and temperature too.
Well, that set me to thinking. First I saw a lot of farmland being sold and housing developed. You know those ugly developments with all houses in a row and just a few variations in their looks. The big selling point being they are in a cul de sac . Then before you knew it a second stop light went up. Thats' right two stoplights in town. The Exxon station up the roads aways recently put up an electronic sign that displays the gas prices.
And now this !
I need to sound the alarm. Our community is disappearing rapidly. I have seen main street change drastically .
I have seen the types of stores changing. Although a good distance away we are becoming a suburb ! I can't stand it. Quite a number of people now living here commute a good distance to work. Seeing less pick up trucks  and tractors and more suvs'. Access to the river is getting more difficult. Land that is not developed but owned is heavily posted with no trespassing and no hunting signs. You can't hardly take a walk in the woods anymore without someone wanting to sue you or have you arrested.
I see our economy shifting to the tourist trade. Not so much sight seeing as waterfowl hunting , going crabbing and fishing and living the "country life" as long as that includes golf courses and fancy restaurants.
Yes in a lot of ways it reminds me of my home town. In case you haven't heard of the "Hamptons" they were once nice little rural communities. I saw the changes coming to them and I'm seeing it all again. History repeating itself. You can call it progress but at what cost ? A few will make financial gains at the cost of selling a legacy. A few will rise to prominence in the community. Some will publicly speak out against some of these changes while secretly embracing them.
In the end some will make claim to being a native son. I've lived here for over twenty years now and let me tell you this much. I'm an outsider and always will be. You can be accepted as part of the community, maybe even well liked, but you will never be a native. That is as true here as it is in my home town. That part really bugs me. You can take the land but you can't take my roots. My roots here are not very deep but I had two Grand kids born here and I'll probably be planted here. I would like this place to remain a peaceful rural community. I know you can't stop progress but I'll try to slow it down.

Hanging Out !

I have two Grandkids that live right down the road from me and I get to enjoy their company all the time. Sometimes it feels like my wife and I are raising them. Not a bad thing ! Like a second chance to correct mistakes made with our own, kinda a do over.
We had twin boys but got one of each flavor with Grandchildren. The girl is the youngest. Morgan is a girly girl. A new experience for us dealing with a little girl. Boys we are used to. As I said Morgan is a real girly girl always fusing with clothes, her hair, what makeup is allowed and being a social butterfly. She has many friends from School, ballet and Girl Scouts. Yesterday she had a sleepover at a friends house. This occurs a lot with her. This leaves her brother alone. He has friends but none live in the neighborhood and they are still too young to ride bicycles to reach others houses.I always feel bad for him when this happens. Yesterday I spent the day with him and we had a sleepover.
There is enough snow left left on the ground so we built a snowman. We also threw some snowballs and slid down a hill made of plowed snow. Later we went to the store and purchased a copy of the orginal Karate Kid movie. I like to share the classics with him. I haven't seen the latest release of this film but almost always remakes disappoint. We are going to see the remake of True Grit however. I got tickets for that show for Christmas. He sleeps over a lot, they both do,so that part is no big deal. They love to sleep over and I'm grateful for that. Soon enough they will outgrow that.
When my own boys were growing up I was in the Navy and gone alot. I didn't get to spend the time doing things with them as much as I would have liked. Also when you do come home from a long deployment its' like someone visiting or a vacation. It takes a week or so for things to get back to normal . Now with Mark I have been with him or around him since his birth. We talk about everything,do everything and are best friends. Same with his sister. It is a new quasi-parenting experience. I'm loving it !
My other Grand daughter lives in New York state. We don't get to see her as often as we would like but pretty often. We talk to her on the phone and the computer sometimes. Naturaly we don't know her personality as well as the others. It is a lot tougher forging a relationship long distance. Maybe that will change over time as she gets older and we can talk more. In the movies and on TV she would just come and spend the summer with us and bond ! Wouldn't it be great if life were like TV ?
Without trying to be too sappy I just want to say Grandkids are the best. They are a reward for living this long I guess. It sure would be boring without them.

Celebrating

New Years Eve has never been a big deal to me. When I was young I would stay up and watch Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians. After that it was Dick Clark's New Years Rockin' Eve. I don't recall ever going to a formal party. It just wasn't a holiday to me. My parents didn't go out,at least when I was young, maybe prior to us kids they did. At midnight we would say Happy New Year and that was about it.
Even after I was married we just never went out. We always preferred to stay at home. Too many people out there partying and driving for me. It is always risky business but New Years Eve is just asking for it.
I do think that situation has improved over the years so we are making progress. Not that I'm against having a cocktail or two. If that is what you want go for it ! Its' just that I'm past that stage in life. Like Hank Jr. said, the headaches hurt more than they used too.
The last few years I see a rise in fireworks for this occasion. I wonder when that tradition started ?  I don't remember them being used for New Years. Not a bad idea. When I moved here to the Eastern Shore of Maryland my neighbor told me for New Years you were supposed to shoot every gun you owned at midnight. He Did ! Told me it was for good luck in the new Year. My wife insists you eat sauerkraut on New Years day to bring you wealth. I eat it every year but am still waiting for it to kick in. Maybe in 2011.
My mother would clean house saying what your house looked like on New Years Day was what it would look like the rest of the year. My home did. My Mom is a good housekeeper.
My New Year will be a quiet one. We will set out a few snacks and try to wait for midnight. Some years we don't make it. Probably watch some of those year in review shows and a little bit of Dick Clark, who is doing that now ? Know it changed because Dick finally started to age just a little though. No shooting guns here, don't own one. Threw confetti one year and didn't get it all up until spring. Not doing that again.
Whatever your plans and traditions enjoy the night. Be safe out there.

A Study

A new study has been done and the results released. The news people would have you believe this study has shown us the light. In a surprising finding they have proven if you don't eat breakfast before working out your body will draw upon its' fat reserves to gain energy. It you do this everyday you will lose weight.
Well, that certainly is earth shattering news. These were some pretty smart researchers let me tell you.
Imagine,if you don't eat, then exercise heavily, you lose weight. Who knew.
These studies just annoy me. Why not use the money spent researching something that is obvious on something more meaningful or useful. Duh,lets feed those that can't afford to eat. We will study them to see if they gain weight. I am no workout person but know this much, don't eat a heavy meal before strenuous activity. Usually makes you sick or lazy. If you don't eat you lose weight. Why research common sense ?
I am just amazed that any scientist would be associated with such a lamebrained study. This is something any person would know. Why do they feel the need to prove the obvious. Even more amazing is that anyone would fund it. I wanna see if you don't eat will you lose weight. Sure heres'  a couple hundred thousand, check it out .
Thats' the way it is, I'm just sayin'.

A Different Atmosphere

The first big storm of the year has arrived. In fact it is almost over. I worked at the grocery yesterday and let me tell you people were stocking up ! It was a regular feeding frenzy. In addition to the staples eggs, bread, milk and toilet tissue we sold every snow shovel we had. The ice melt, curiously, didn't sell as well.
The topic of the day was naturally the weather. How much snow we would get and the apparent lack of global warming being the primary subject.
I have noticed that two subjects are always discussed when people meet and interact. The weather and their health. First comes the stating of the obvious, its' cold/hot outside. Usually  followed by an acknowledgement.
The other alternative is, how are you ? Usually followed by,fine thank you. I guess this is because there can be little argument with either topic. Discretion being the better part of valor.
Occasionally however you run into that individual that provides  too much information. It has happened to you I'm sure. And as the age of the person being asked increases, so does the likelihood of getting too much information. I think there is a logarithm associated with this phenomena but I'll leave that part to the mathematicians. I find it uncomfortable and embarrassing to discuss certain areas of the anatomy in a public setting. Little is not discussed in television ads but that is another topic altogether.
Another situation that occurs is that person that prolongs the conversation way beyond a courteous reply. Almost as though they have had no human contact in a long time. You know the type. After a while you get to know these people and try to avoid them. Probably the very reason they talk so much !
Then there is always the weather discussions. The telling of storms from the past and how brutal the conditions were. Last years blizzards and this past summers thunderstorms. The big ice storm a few years ago. And the old standby, when I was a Kid story ! How any of us survived those harsh conditions I'll never understand. Surely it was divine providence.
As a retail worker I do get amused by some of the things people will say to you. The snow is flying and conditions are getting worse yet you hear, the roads are really bad I don't know why anyone would be out ?
This comes from the person buying chips, dip and a two liter soda. Or you might hear, I wonder why they are closing the store early ? Guess they figure we live in the store so we don't need to drive home or anything.
I chuckle when I hear the complaint the shopping carts are wet when it is raining outside or they bring one in from the snow outside. Do people really think we should dry them somehow?
Working retail can be fun as long as you don't take it too seriously. The old adage you can please some of the people some of the time is certainly true. Weather days at the grocery can be trying to your patience. People have a tendency to be a bit frantic for some mysterious reason. It is definitely a different atmosphere,(no pun intended).

The Day After

The big day has come and gone. Time to pack up the holiday and get back to the real world. Won't take long for everything to get back to normal. It was an enjoyable day. Watching the kids with their new toys is always fun. It  will interesting to see which ones have staying power. Some will be set aside rather quickly while others will be played with right into spring. It is always a mystery.
I was very fortunate to receive a new digital camera as a gift from my son and daughter in law. Its' a Nikon and is capable of HD video too. Amazing technology for an old guy. Of course it comes with new software to be installed on the computer. Now I'm no computer wiz but do have some knowledge and experience.
I installed this new software according to the instructions. I am very careful to follow the directions quite closely due to my lack of technical skills. You guessed it,it didn't work. Rats ! Well, off to the website to get some help. After a bit of browsing I got to the ask a question page. You know you have to fill out a form and provide certain information. I can tell you the type and model of the camera, its' on the box,but "firmware version" whats' that. More looking up. Your operating system. WindowsXP  service pack number ?
Rats. If I knew all those answers I probably wouldn't need your help ! Maybe it is just me but I find all this very frustrating. I hate that message that says, An error has occurred and the program needs to close,if you were in the middle of something your information may be lost.We apologize for the inconvenience.
What Error ?  Can you not tell me the error ?
The day after Christmas and now I'm stressed out trying to get this product to work. Right back to normal.
Could be worse. When the kids were small you had all those things to assemble either Christmas day or the day after. Then you had to go get more batteries.
I'm not complaining this issue will get resolved I'm sure. They always do. I'll wind up having to buy something  before it is all over with. Just wish the help I need was a lot easier to obtain. I e-mailed them and I've been assured I will get a response within one business day ! Can't wait for tomorrow.

Merry Christmas

It is Christmas morning. I am thankful for the day. Christmas morning has its' own special feel to it. When I was a child it was all about Santa and the excitement of receiving gifts. As I grew older I came to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas. Then I had Children of my own and that excitement of Santa and presents returned to my household. They grew up and it was just us two again. Quiet peaceful Christmases until the Grandkids ,then a return to Santa and all that scene.
This Christmas morning it is just us two having our morning coffee. We must be patient and wait for the kids to call. Christmas is on their time these days. We are early risers and the wait will be a long one for us. Thankfully they live just a few blocks away. Can't wait for the call. Can't wait to see their faces when they open our gifts to them. Love the look on their faces when they give the gifts they have picked out themselves for us. They are seven and nine and watch you closely for your reaction. It is always one of wonder and surprise I can assure you. The happiness in their faces when you tell them the gifts are perfect is worth anything !
Christmas is about the happiness of others. To me the greatest joy is seeing others happy on this special day.
Happiness comes in many forms. I have been blessed with many very Merry Christmases.

Christmas Magic

I remember a Christmas when I received from Santa a complete set of Tonka trucks and a whole lotta army figures. It was one of the most memorable of my childhood. I hadn't asked for those trucks or Army men. It wasn't on any list. It came as a complete and total surprise. I can still see those trucks lined up under the tree.
Each one was wrapped separately. The fleet ranged from a simple pick up truck to a mobile crane ! They were bright yellow and made of heavy gauge metal. Almost indestructible. They came ready to roll,no assembly required, right down to the lifting string on the crane. The fun started immediately hauling the discarded wrapping paper to the trash can in the kitchen ! The bulldozer to push it in pile.the crane to lift into the back of the dump truck. No need to worry about batteries these babies are kid powered.
The army figures came in a large plastic bag. They were those molded green plastic figures in different poses.
I don't know how many there actually were but it seemed like a million. I spent hours crawling around setting these guys up and staging battles. No matter they were all the same Army they fought each other all the time !
Kinda like a family.(lol) They suffered all matter of calamity.floods, landslides, getting run over by Tonka trucks etc. I'll say this much, they were durable little guys.
Looking back it is a Christmas I'll never forget. The only other one that comes close is when I got that Spider Bicycle I wanted so much. Isn't it amazing that over all those years these are the most memorable items ?
As a child I always had wonderful Christmases. We weren't rich but had plenty. It would make for a better story to tell you how poor we were but that just wasn't the case. Thanks to Sears and Roebuck and J.C. Penny we managed just fine.
As a Grandfather I try now to give that one gift that they will always remember. It is not the most expensive item, learned that from those Army figures, but something unexpected may do. But then again,I really did want that bicycle. In reality there is no telling what gift will be that magic one. I'll bet we all have one that we remember the most.
Heres' hoping you all have a memorable Christmas.

Traditions

Christmas traditions. We all have unique Christmas traditions that we learned from our parents. Rituals performed,if only in our minds, that give us comfort and joy. Maybe there is one particular ornament that always goes on the tree first or a silent prayer said.
Growing up we always had a yule log. Made from a fresh cut white Birch tree and fresh greens. It would be lit on Christmas day; at least for a few hours. When I manage to get the materials I still make one. Sadly this year I did not. This tradition came from my Grandmother who was Swedish. We always put up the tree and decorated it together as a family. My wives family however did not do this. After the kids went to bed her parents put up the tree and decorated it Christmas Eve. She tells of waking up to see the tree ! Sounds like a wonderful tradition.
In our stockings we always got a big Orange in the toe. I asked my Mom about this once and she told me this. When I was little Oranges were only available during the winter months and were quite expensive. It was a real treat to have one and special. My brothers and sisters all got oranges every Christmas. Every year we put a can of Schaefer beer in the toe of my fathers stocking.
This year I had the Grand kids decorate the tree with handmade ornaments. They made a  paper chain and strung popcorn. A couple of tin foil stars and a few ornaments of their own design. My wife crocheted some tiny stockings and a few Angels. We did use my traditional Angel for the tree topper. I thought I had better do that this year as soon they will be too old for such things. I also like the larger lights with a few of the bubble lights scattered in.
The Wifes' Crocheted Angel
I have mentioned it before but my firmest tradition is listening to the Christmas Tree. I do that every year on Christmas Eve. I do it alone with all other lights off except the tree. I may listen for a few minutes or an hour depending. Some years, when I was in the Navy,I was away from home. I still managed this tradition although I may not have been alone and it wasn't my tree exactly. No matter the tree will speak to you anyway.

Memory

Its' that time again. Time for all those year in review specials. Who died, top songs and videos',news stories, etc. I'm always surprised by certain things, was that this year ? Seems like a lot longer ago. How quickly some (in my case most) things fade away and are forgotten. 2010 was not a particularly memorable year for me. No new Grand kids or anything. Didn't win the lottery (yet). No lasting peace in the mid-east.
I did watch a show on 60 minutes about people that can remember every day of their lives. Marilu Henner of TV fame is one. They said their are only six people in the world that have this ability. I can see were that would come in handy but also were it could be a curse.
Like most people I have selected memory. I remember things that are either really bad or really good. It is amazing how our brains work though. I remember the smallest details about mechanical things I have worked on but don't remember why I went into the kitchen. I'm terrible at remembering dates but enjoy reading about history. Selected memory can be a very useful tool however. Did you get the items at the store I asked for ? Opps. forgot about that. You will have to go back. But you said don't worry about it. Selected memory.
I wonder how many people they must employ to make one of those year in review shows ? You would have to shift through a lot of footage to put that thing together. I'm sure it has become easier with computers and the internet. Still,it must take quite a bit of time to assemble. Some items will be no brainers to include but others would have to be considered. I have little to no interest in celebrities but there is a wealth of fodder there.
I would be hard pressed to compile anything close to a list of events for 2010. I just don't remember anything of particular interest happening to me. Nothing that really affected me either. I'll watch the shows though and my memory will be jogged. I'll be surprised as always. A lot can happen in a year.

Innocence

I took my granddaughter to her Girl Scout meeting/Christmas Party last evening. She is seven and in the second grade. She asked that I stay with her and I agreed. There were other children's mothers there but I was the only Grandpa. I just stood toward the back of the room and observed.
It did this old heart good to watch these young girls start their meeting by saying The Pledge of Allegiance.
At least some government agency hasn't stopped that practice yet. As they stood in a circle holding hands you can't help but be touched by the simple innocence of it all. Most were dressed in their Christmas finery with their Girl Scout vests worn over top making an interesting mix.
First they did a Girl Scout activity in which they cut up fruit to make a fruit salad and mixed ingredients to make a punch. It was a little messy but the troop leaders handled the situation with patience. Guess that is a prerequisite to being a troop leader anyway.
This being accomplished we all sat down to eat the treats that had been brought. Their were cupcakes, cookies, carrot sticks,a couple salads, mac and cheese, crackers, cheese and even a gingerbread house. Grace was said before the meal and this pleased me as well.
Next came the secret Santa. This was amusing to me because it was really no secret at all. They were all telling who got who. After the exchange of gifts their was about 15 minutes left to the meeting. It was decided to play a version of duck, duck, goose they called Santa,Santa, sleigh. Same game different name. The meeting place has a hardwood floor so when they chased after each other their was a lot of slipping going on. It was fun watching them having so much fun doing something so simple.
They gathered in a circle and holding hands one more time did there farewells. All in all it was an enjoyable evening and maybe I'll go again someday.

I'm Just Sayin'

Well, they did it ! They went and repealed the "Don't Ask,Don't  Tell" policy. I wrote about my feelings on this subject before but feel compelled to comment again. Being a retired member of our armed forces I feel I've earned that right anyway. I think it is a big mistake and will lead to trouble.
First let me state I am not against Gay people. I don't like the lifestyle choice they made but it is not my life.
Gays have been part of our society forever. Enough said about that.
The trouble lies in the fact that we are dealing with young people away from home and trying to adjust to a new society. I know I was there. Done that.
Take a 18 or 19 year old boy,put him with a crowd of other young boys and the natural macho man instinct will kick in. Throw some alcohol into the mix and you are really brewing(no pun intended) up a batch of trouble. The straight guys will have to prove that they are straight and the Gays guys are going to try to make a stand. Recipe for trouble. I can not address what will happen with the Lesbian community as I have no basis for that other than speculation.
Another thing is this policy will also be used as a tool. I was there when they first allowed women on ships. It was quite a change and policies were set. No fraternizing on the ship allowed ! Of course there was fraternizing going on as you can make all the policies you want but hormones kick in. This led to jealousies and a certain amount of fighting. The worst part was the girls could holler that they were being harassed and really mess up a career. This happened on at least two occasions that I know of personally and the claims were totally unfounded. It was a tool to garner sympathy and possibly some measure of favor. I can see the same thing happening with the newest policy change.
The only part of the policy that needed changing was the part were you could be discharged for being Gay !
I can tell you I never asked but sometimes I could tell who was or wasn't Gay. I really never cared and still don't. It will take some time for everyone to adjust, and they will, but I hate the problems that this is going to cause until they do.

The take over

A couple months ago a neighbor of mine,an elderly lady, rescued this cat. She took him to the vets for care, bought the required medicine and took care of him. She lives here only during the summer months and it was time for her return to Florida. She had been looking for someone to adopt this cat as she felt she couldn't take him home with her. A few days before she was scheduled to leave she had still been unsucessfull in this pursuit. I was talking with her and she was getting upset so I,being the softy I am, agreed to take the cat.
I have owned a cat before but this one is different. My other cat,"Jack" stayed outdoors most of the time. I would let him inside whenever the mood struck him. He was a free spirit. This one, "Hobo" has been declawed and neutered. This cat does very little other than eat and sleep.
I finished giving him his medicine and he is in good health again. Getting a little overweight too. This cat is very pushy though. He comes up to you and meows' quite loudly when he wants to be fed. If you do not respond quickly enough he will jump up and get right in your face ! When I'm at the computer he will jump on the table and sit right in front of the screen.
I put his litter box in the bathroom. He does make a mess covering up his business and now I have to keep a broom and dustpan in there all the time to sweep up. I can't go in there now without checking that litter pan.
You had better keep it cleaned out or Hobo will leave a spot elsewhere. Luckily no land mines if you know what I mean. He acts somewhat like a dog at times. I live in an upstairs apartment with a deck. He will go to the door and start meowing when he wants to go out. He never leaves the deck but enjoys watching the traffic go by. He got beat up by a bunch of feral cats before he was rescued and think he learned a lesson. When he is ready to come in,usually to eat some more,he will start meowing again. On one occasion he jumped up in a window and started meowing because no one was at the door ! This cat demands your immediate attention.
I purchased a cat bed for him but he refuses to use it. Seems like every week he finds a different place to sleep. First it was in a window in the hall, then in the hall and since I put up the christmas tree he sleeps under there. On rare occasions he will jump into my lap and allow himself to be petted. Of course cat hair gets on my clothes but that is the price I have to pay. I don't know how I allowed myself to get into this situation.
Well.I'm stuck with him now. Stupid, pushy cat just took over the house. No wonder the neighbor didn't want to take him home.

Full Circle

It has been said that history repeats itself. I think that is a true enough statement as very little is new, just reinvented. Two co-workers were talking about purchasing holiday gifts. One was an older person the other in her teens. The older person suggested a CD but the younger one says, nobody buys CDs anymore ! You download the song from I-Tunes.
This set me to thinking. I recall buying 45 rpm records for 90 cents. You would hear the song on the radio and couldn't wait until the single was released. If the group/person had enough hits you might save up for the album. Albums were almost ten dollars ! Sometimes even more. With the advent of the eight track tape player 45'S became a thing of the past. I do remember seeing some cassette tapes that only had a few songs on them but guess that trend didn't catch on. After cassette tapes came the cd's. Now we apparently have traveled full circle as you can purchase a single tune for about 99 cents I am told. History repeating or a reinvention ?
I do find it amusing that stereo systems (do they still call it that) have grown so small in size. I remember a time when the quality of the sound depended upon the size of the equipment. Huge speakers, giant receivers with dozens of dials or slides, the bigger the better. Now the speaker fits inside your ear and the equipment needed to play it can easily be strapped to your belt or just about anywhere else for that matter. Remember the Boom Boxes ? Don't see many of those anymore. Given time I'm sure we will see a return to the larger sizes.
When it comes to clothing styles the same thing holds true. Very few are completely new. Usually just a reinvention of an older style. Seems like this is especially true with womens footwear. A lot of the popular styles today look like something I've seen in very old pictures. Some have the buttons on them, although I don't think you need a button hook anymore. Its' early in the winter season but I've seen a lot of boots that my sister wore. I think she called them thigh high and they were all the rage back in the day.
A form of confirmation of this to me is the wearing of pajamas as regular clothing. The designers couldn't come up with something new so lets' reinvent PJS'.
Then there is the issue of Global warming. Whats' the deal with that ? We had an ice age and then it got warmer didn't it ? Why are the scientists surprised ? Wait long enough and it will get cold again.
History does repeat itself. Mankind makes the same mistakes over and over. We just reinvent the reasons.

First Snow

The weather report is predicting snow ! It has been very cold here in Greensboro for the last several days. That in and of itself  is not too bad except it has been accompanied by wind. The wind chill has kept it in the single digits.
The predicted snow is not very significant as it is only a few inches but it is our first of the season. I'll be working at the grocery today and all I will hear today is snow. The bread, eggs, milk and toliet paper will be flying off the shelf. It should prove to be an interesting day. I expect we will be putting out the snow shovels and ice melt as well.
I am always puzzled by the frenzy to buy large quanaties of the aforementioned items. The forecast is for a few inches, not a few feet. This event will not effect travel past a few hours. Yet I see people buying enough to last a month. I can understand extra bread and milk but the one that really puzzles me is the toliet paper !
What makes you believe you are going to need an excessive amount of this commodity ? Is their a biological change in your system during a snow event ? If stuck inside the house do you intend to frequent a certain room more often ? I just don't get it. My consumption of this product stays fairly level throughout the year, except when the grandkids arrive then there is a spike in usage !
I get far more concerned if they predict an ice event. Icing causes the power outages that concern me. I have electric heat ! I do not have a fireplace or own a kerosene heater. My kitchen stove is electric as well. I certainly hope we do not get an ice event !
Today the conversation will be about the weather. It is usually the topic most frequently mentioned but today that is about all I will hear. I will get tired of it by midday. People will get an almost frenzied approach to shopping. It is almost as though they feel they will be snowed in at the store. All checkout lines will be open.
Once the ground is completely covered the intensity to shop will increase.
It is the first snow predicted this year. Christmas is only 9 days away. I'm dreaming of a White Christmas !

Ruts

I usually write these blogs of mine first thing in the morning. I like to have my morning coffee and be alone with my thoughts. Sometimes I'll write about what happened the day before or sometime meaningless( random thought) and what I'm thinking about memory wise. This morning the Grandkids are here with me as they had to spend the night due to other family issues. Their other Grandfather is ill and in the hospital so Mom and Dad were there late last night. At any rate the morning routine is well not routine. Cartoons are on the television and they are asking questions and generally being kids. My thought process has been disturbed and I can't seem to get on track with what I want to talk about.
I'm not complaining as there is nothing better than having kids around, especially at this time of year. They are so full of excitement about upcoming school parties and the arrival of the "big man." The older of the two I don't think really believes in Santa anymore but is not taking any chances. I can still employ the old,you better be good Santa is watching line !
I do think it must have been nice when several generations all shared the same home. Like the Waltons. Grandparents need the Grandchildren to keep them young. Parents need their parents around to temper their decisions with wisdom and as a wise man once said,"it takes a village to raise a child." At least it is something close to that.
Well time to rearrange the morning schedule and get going. I feel disheveled somehow. We all get into our ruts and it is good to be lifted out of them every once in a while.

The Lights

Strings of colored lights say only one thing;Christmas ! Isn't it something how one thing can define a season so completely. Whether hanging from the eaves of our houses or wrapped around a pine tree nothing says Christmas like a string of colored lights. The clear white lights enjoy some popularity during this season but can be seen virtually year round adding ambiance to a variety of settings.
I always enjoyed the large, light bulb sized ones, that would be strung across the streets in town. I always use the larger size on my tree. Now we have the more eco friendly led bulbs that put off a much softer glow. I don't care for them as much, guess I'm a traditionalist. I really don't care for the flashing and running light settings either. Turn them on and let them glow Baby, thats' my motto.
I see lights beginning to be used for other holidays like Halloween and Easter but it isn't the same. To me it just doesn't impart that holiday feeling like those colored lights. All things in moderation and if you start using the lights too much it ruins the novelty effect.
I'm not certain just what it is about those colored lights that pleases me so. I suspect that it must be a subconcious thing. Perhaps it brings back memories of early childhood Christmases. It could be an association thing, colored lights equal good times. Whatever the case I enjoy my colored lights and they are the symbol that the holiday season is here !

Home

I've heard it said that you can never go home. At different times in my life this meant different things to me.
I have come to the realization that this statement is true on several levels. You can not return to the past.
I left my home when I was eighteen to join the Navy. I still recall standing on that train platform giving mom a kiss goodbye and my father a firm handshake. I didn't know I was leaving forever my childhood and home behind.
After basic training I got to "come home" and some things were different. My parents didn't treat me like a kid anymore. I didn't have to ask to go somewhere or be home for dinner. I told them where I was going and when I would return out of respect but I didn't have too. My bedroom had been cleaned but it didn't feel like my room anymore. That was a strange sensation. Even my dog had passed away.
After four years I got out of the Navy and returned " home." Only it wasn't home anymore. I had to rent an apartment, get a job,and act like a responsible citizen. During those first four Navy years I would say I was less then responsible. Only a few of my high school buddies were around and they were all grown up. Shoot some even had children. The town still looked pretty much the same but had a different feel to it. I felt almost like an outsider.
After two years I went back into the service for personal reasons. I only returned " home" a few times after that. Once to attend my Dads funeral, and a couple times just to visit.
Ask any serviceman where "home " is and invariably he/she will tell you the place where they grew up.
That is "home." " Home "is a place that only exists in our memories if you once leave it. Talk to those that never left"home" and it becomes quite clear to you. At least that is my experience.
Even today although I haven't lived "home" in over 30 years if asked I will say East Hampton,New York is my home but I live in Greensboro,Md. I'll always be living somewhere else and even if I went to live back "home" that really wouldn't be "home".
In a previous blog I spoke of listening to the Christmas tree and that is when I go "home."

Self Service

I have seen these self service checkouts for some time. The idea didn't strike my fancy at all and I have resisted using them. Today I was in a bit of a hurry and decided to give it a try. I read the directions and away I went. First scan the item. Where is that bar code ? Found it but it didn't want to scan. After several passes and adjusting the angle it finaly rang up,more like a chime though. Select method of payment. Alright thats' easy, cash. Insert the bills into the acceptor. It accepts the first one but not the next. Rats have to try another bill that isn't as wrinkled or someone hasn't written on. Standing there trying to get this machine to accept my legal tender while others are waiting is starting to stress me out. I'm getting dirty looks from people standing there with their credit cards at the ready. I ask the attendant,I guess that is what their title is,for help but she just answers ," only if the machine malfunctions". At last I get the machine to accept my money and it dispenses my change down a little chute and a voice says place your item in a bag and take your reciept.
The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I knew that it would that is why I resisted all this time.
The store was so huge it took ten minutes to locate the aisle where my item was. Another five picking out the right thing. No sales people in sight to assist. And to top the experience off I had to check myself out ! The only store personel I saw where the unhelpful attendant and the one checking my parcel at the exit.
I miss the days of real service at the store. When someone would ask if you needed help and be happy to help you. When you checked out they bagged your items, took your money, and thanked you.
Self service check out indeed. What is next, get it from the warehouse yourself I just want your money but I don't want to be bothered so do that yourself too. I'll just check to make sure you are not a thief as you leave.

Moments

There are those moments in life when you are indecisive. The situation is beyond your control but yet you wish to control it. These moments just come along and catch you by surprise. Some people panic and others respond with indifference. The wise ones take whatever action they are capable of.
It may be as simple as the car won't start or a much more serious problem. I hate that feeling of helplessness.
Or worse still is knowing the answer but another refuses to accept that action. Then the situation becomes frustrating as well. This situation is occuring right now.Not to me but someone very close to me. I feel the pain as if it were my own. I can only offer understanding and support. I really dislike these moments.

All about Chia

With the arrival of the holiday season comes all the ads for new products. The usual assortment of toys, tvs' and high tech gadgets. Also however the arrival of the latest Chia Pet ! The jingle caught my attention " cha cha cha chia" and set me to thinking. When was the first Chia pet and exactly what is it anyway ? Off to wikipedia for some answers.
First off a Chia pet is a Mexican styled terracotta figurine. The Chia is a plant (salvia hispanica),who knew.
They were introduced in 1982 but it somehow seems like they have been around forever. I don't recall ever growing one though. I have a Obama head still in the box. Think I'll save that for awhile. I did grow the Chia herb garden once and it did work. Fooling with the herbs wasn't really my thing so it was just a novelty.
I did find out while researching this that for a limited time Chia Cuddlies were produced. These were plush toys that played the jingle when you squeezed the paw. There was a puppy and a cub. I also found that various items were included in different chias. An alarm clock and playing cards are two examples.
This year you can get chia cat grass. Grow this and your cat will eat it instead of your houseplants. I have a cat and haven't noticed this being a problem but you never know I guess.
Anyway I'll have to start looking around for some Chias. They also made a Washington and Lincoln chia head and would like to have them to keep President Obama company in the attic. Think I may have missed out on another retirement opportunity. If I had only thought to collect all the chias. Some are discontinued.
The first one was a Ram so if you see that one, grab it up.

Christmas Past

Went with the Grandkids and got this years Tree. A douglas fir. With a few exceptions I have always had a live tree and still much prefer that. The smell of a fresh cut tree and its' lack of a perfect shape both appeal to me. I don't feel bad because the tree was already cut and grown just for this purpose.
Following the ritual of getting it home, the base trimmed and mounted in its' stand the lights go on. I like the larger size lights (c7 for those in the know). That is what size was on my trees as a child. I also like the bubble lights, another nod to the past. Then the ornaments come out. Every year they are carefully unwrapped and admired. I love this one and I don't remember this one. A big conversation accompanies this process. This year is different however. This year the kids are making all the ornaments. They are making a paper chain and stringing popcorn. Waiting on the other ornaments to be created yet. There is no hurry and it gives them something to look forward to. Oh a few of our special ornaments will go on as well. But only those that were hand made. There is a star made with string and toothpicks from an old Navy friend. Lost track of him years ago but his ornament goes on every year. My wife crochets little stockings.
Spread around the house are Christmas nick knacks. Some we have had since our first year together and others added over the years. In 1996 my wife gave me the Christmas mouse. A stuffed creature dressed in a vest of red with green trousers. Love that one. Some candle holders and statues of the Ghosts of Christmas.
Oh,and of course the Nativity scene. That gets its own special place.
In the evening I will turn off the television and the computer. All the lights go off except for the Christmas tree. I like to just sit and admire the beauty of that tree. My mom always said."listen to the Christmas tree.'

When I was younger I didn't know what that meant. I know now what it is she was saying. If you sit quietly and listen you can hear the laughter of your childhood and feel that joy again. It is a comfort .

Back to Basics

It is me or is it getting harder to buy the basic anything? Coffee for instance, morning blend, breakfast blend, coarse grind, with chicory, arabica, mountain grown and on and on. Don't even get me started with the Latte thingys. Whatever they are !
Water is getting the same way, spring water, filtered water, flavored water, sparkling water and a host of others. It is enough to drive a person mad. I just want a simple cup of coffee please ! The variety of almost anything you can buy is endless. It is getting to the point where you need a PHD to decide about the products. Want to purchase a new TV ? Be prepared  with a degree in electronics. LCD or Plasma ?
What resolution did you want. Do you need a HDMI port ? HD or not ?
The other day my wife asked for barbecue flavored potato chips. I went to the store and discovered there are several types.Kansas City,New Orleans and Carolina barbecue. Good thing I have a cell phone. I won't even mention the variety of flavors and types of chips staring at me. Kettle cooked, thin sliced, thick sliced.rippled, traditional and a few others.
I must be getting old because I find this annoying. I just want the basic things and all these choices are confusing. Its' a plot to keep us shopping longer. Everything says it is new and improved. Well, some things were fine just the way they were. A plain cup of coffee and a good hard roll are just fine. I don't like to provide a detailed description of every thing I want. Lets' get back to basics. Its' all getting to technical for me. Too many details.

Pearl Harbor Day

Today is Pearl harbor day. A day to remember those who fought in that epic war. My father and several uncles all fought. Thankfully all returned but many did not. The United States did not want to be involved in  this conflict but we were left with no choice. A sneak attack on a Sunday morning.
I only heard stories of this and have seen many documentaries and movies about it. Seems like we hear less and less as time goes on. This is only natural as the wound heals. As a nation we marked this day to never be forgotten. The survivors of not only Pearl Harbor but the conflict itself grow few in number. It is upon us,the succeeding generation to keep this memory alive. The memory is not to foster hate for our enemy but rather to keep alive the sacrifices made.
Having spoken with veterans of that war I can say without a doubt that a lot of them did not want to fight. The majority would rather have stayed home with family and friends. All of them did feel however it was their duty to serve. They owed a debt to the nation and were more than willing to pay it. Unlike today were our enemies are much harder to define they knew who was responsible and justice brought to bear.
It has been said it was the greatest generation and I agree with that statement. Let us not forget.
Pearl Harbor Day was a day that changed the world. Not only for us but for the entire civilized world.

Hold the Brownies

The government wants to control the bake sales at our schools. You read that right, the government wants to control the bake sale at our schools. I was amazed by this news story. 9.8% unemployment,a deficit so large I can't even write the number, gas prices out of sight, social security on the brink of bankruptcy, homelessness, hunger, drug addition and a crime rate that is off the charts but we will regulate the brownies !
Mrs Obama is championing this bit of legislation. The reason; childhood obesity. She feels that by limiting the number of bake sales a school is allowed to have will help with this problem. The school fundraisers selling this demon food are killing our children. The fact that their parents take them to every fast food restaurant in town and buy them all kinds of junk food is not the primary cause. It is those insidious bake sales ! The fact that these same parents allow their children to sit in front of the TV playing video games for hours is not the problem. The fact that at some schools the children are not allowed to play outside for fear of child predators has nothing to do with it. She did suggest alternative sales, lettuce and carrot sales would be a great alternative ! Yeah right that'll raise a ton of money.
I just find it amazing that at out of all the possible causes she could back she chooses bake sales. Are you serious ? Does she really want her legacy to be "The Woman who stopped Bake Sales ?"
The government doesn't need to be involved in this, period ! I feel there just might be more pressing issues to be addressed. Do not waste my tax dollars on nonsense. What is next; controlling what retailers can sell ? Should we just ban candy sales and provide severe penalties to those caught eating chocolate ?
I don't often talk about politics but this one was irresistible. Regulate Bake Sales ? Gimme a break.

A Anecdote from my Aunt

This amusing little story was related to me by a dear Aunt. She is no longer with us but her wit and humor live on.The tale as I heard it went something like this;
My daughter came into the house after playing outside. I noticed she was chewing rather loudly and asked her what she had. She said chewing gum. I asked her what kind of gum? She told me it was Grape flavored.
I asked her for a piece. She pulled some out of her mouth and broke off a piece. I took that and started to chew it along with her. I remarked that it was pretty good gum. Then I asked her, where did you get it ?
She looked up at me and smiled. She said simply, I found it on the sidewalk ! Then she told me it had been already softened up by somebody so it was easy to chew. I thought I was gonna die . I must have used the whole bottle of Listerine.
I'll never forget that story and the look on my Aunts' face while she told it.

A Christian Nation

It is time for the Christmas Parade here in Greensboro,Md. OOPS,not supposed to say that anymore it is the Holiday parade. I have been informed that we can no longer have Christmas parties either,Holiday Parties only !
This is not the first year or first time I have heard of this change but with each passing year it grates on my nerves a little more. I think it started with Seasons Greetings as a form of respect to our Jewish friends. All well and good. If they wish to say Happy Hanuka to me I would thank them and wish them the same. I don't think any of this is coming from that group. I have had some Jewish friends and none of them ever said they were offended by Christmas. I certainly am not offended by Hanuka or someone displaying a Menorah.
So I wonder where this is coming from ? On our money it says,In God We Trust, and I know some want that removed. In the Pledge it says,One Nation under God,others want that stopped. I don't think anyone is offended by having U S currency in their pockets though ! As far as One Nation under God,duh,we are a Christian Nation ! Is that a surprise to anyone ? As good and faithful Christians we allow others to practice their faith without persecution. Now these same people want us to change the way we celebrate our beliefs ?
It is true that parties and parades have little to do with the real meaning of Christmas but that is not the point.
I understand the principal of seperation of church and state. I am a Christian and I wish you a Merry Christmas. If you are offended by that I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you can not understand what it is I'm saying.
You are free to celebrate whatever holidays you choose in whatever way you choose. If you want to have a party,go for it ! You can call it what you like.

Take a good look

The things we take for granted. These are the things we grew up with or around. To us they are everyday commonplace things that warrant only a passing interest. It must be ingrained in us humans to be fascinated by far away things and the fuel of our wanderlust.
I was reading a message from a friend that mentioned the windmills back home. This triggered a thought that it was funny to be discussing the windmills when in all probability the majority of people in our country have only seen them in pictures. I grew up with these windmills. Saw them everyday and paid little attention to them. Once a year when I was growing up they would put the sails on one and grind some corn to sell to the tourists. I did go see that once. The school would sometimes take the children for a tour.
One mill sat right in the fork of two major roads in town and in winter stood starkly against the sky. Another sat behind John Howard Paynes' house. Thats' right"Home Sweet Home". It sits next to the church I used to attend so I saw it often. As for "Home Sweet Home" saw that as well but never visited it until I was in my teens. Even then I didn't appreciate just what it was I was looking at. A third was a little father up town and was kind of tucked away out of sight. It was privately owned then but I understand it is open to the public now. This windmill, and a few others, were built by the Dominy family. Unless you are a clock enthusiast you probably won't recognize that name. They were famous clock makers but also cabinetmakers and builders.
I heard stories about them growing up.
In the towns surrounding my own their were other mills. So you see windmills were a very common thing to me. Took them for granted and never really took an interest in them. Moving about the country as I have I have always found things of interest locally. Of course the locals don't think much about them unless you ask. They take them for granted. I think the majority of us get bored with the local stuff. It is usually a case of I can see that anytime. Problem is that time never seems to come. Make time to see what is in your own backyard. You just might be surprised.

Necessity

I've just now noticed all the ads for free cell phones. A new government entitlement. If you qualify for just about any government social program you are qualified for this additional benefit. Medicare,SSI,food stamps are just a few examples.
In the ads they say how you can get these phones ,at no charge, and a set number of minutes each month. You can also purchase additional minutes by the way. The plan includes text messaging. They go on to explain how these are a necessity. If you are looking for employment they provide a means for your potential employer to contact you. Have a medical emergency just dial the phone. You can call your grandchildren says one ad.
A couple of things bug me about this latest government program. First is that Trac Phone is the only company that provides this service. They use various names but if you look they are all subsidiaries of Trac Phone. How did Trac Phone manage to get this contract from the government ? The next thing that bugs me is the misleading information. Did you know that you can dial any cell phone that is charged and be connected with 911 ? No plan required. Another thing is I'm all for helping people out but are cell phones a necessity ? A staple of life as they would have us believe ?
I hate to be cynical but this program has so much potential for abuse. I can see the Trac Phone people doing the same thing as those companies with the power chairs and scooters. We will get you a cell phone at no cost to you or we will give it to you free. I'm sure you have all heard that line a thousand times on TV ads.
If we prequalify you for a phone  blah  blah   blah.
The spending has to stop somewhere folks. I think the money set aside for this program could be better used. Give the elderly a life alert system at no charge.
Well thats' the way it is I suppose but, "Look,I'm just sayin'"

Defective Technology

Somebody needs to invent two items. First a camera that takes a picture of me the way I really look and secondly a mirror that shows a true reflection. I've had a lot of both over the years but lately I seem to be getting defective ones.
Take my new hi tech digital camera for instance. I can put a giant memory card in there to take literally hundreds of pictures. It has image stabilization. Automatic flash and red eye prevention. A real technological wonder but every time someone takes my picture with it something goes wrong. I don't look like that ! My hair isn't that gray and how come my belly is protruding like that ? Luckily the camera does have that delete picture feature. That was a wonderful invention there. Remember when you used to get pictures developed and all you had was a hard copy and a negative ? A lot of those hard copy prints never got destroyed and crop up at bad moments. Think your Mom showing them to your date. Negatives never got thrown away for some mysterious reason. I never in my life took a negative to the store to have additional prints made.
Something has happened to mirrors as well. It must be something in the materials used to produce them. You know you can't get good quality materials anymore. They are probably made in China and those Chinese are trying to demoralize our society so they can take over. The mirror I had in my bedroom growing up was a good one and was probably made in America. It showed a true reflection. This one in my bathroom is obviously defective. You just can't get good stuff anymore.
And that brings up another thing. Why can't they make an audio recording device that actually sounds like your voice ? I've never had or seen one yet. You talk or sing and on playback it just doesn't sound like you. I know because when I'm singing along with the radio I can match them note for note. Alan Jackson or George Jones, doesn't make a difference but if it is on tape or even a digital recording something goes wrong.
Maybe if the microphone was placed inside your ear ? Hmmm  I'll need to do some research.

Cyber Monday

I already wrote about black Friday and now I keep hearing about Cyber Monday. All these great deals on line. Shoudn't most people be at work ? I'm sure no one would be shopping while at work ! I'd bet those deals will still be there on Tuesday. Some media person will have to coin a phrase for that.
This cyber Monday thing sounds like someone trying to make another quasi-holiday. I'm betting Hallmark will have a card for it next year. The bottom line here is they want you to spend your money and are hoping you can just use that credit card of yours. Relax and shop away till the card runs out.
I heard on the news how many millions have already been spent on holiday gifts. It is a staggering amount that I really can't wrap my mind around. I thought we were in a recession ? They say if we spend enough we can turn the economy around. I'd better take a course in economics because I can't figure out how going into deeper debt improves our current situation. It is all very confusing to this simple country boy.
The period of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas should just be called the shopping season. Most shoppers are not too jolly and very few I think really enjoy it. How can you with the crowds and that sense of urgency that is in the air? A lot of people are stressing out. A complusion to buy everyone a gift when you really can't afford it is not a good feeling at all. That may be the reason for the rise in Gift card sales I touched upon yesterday.
Maybe we should just have "cash Wednesday" where you give everyone some cash and say Happy Holidays. You know its' not correct to say Merry Christmas anymore, but thats' another blog.
I just get annoyed with all this hype to spend, spend, spend. The retailers would have you believe you can buy a great Christmas. You can't !

Getting the Gift

I was shopping with my wife and her sister. They were discussing what to buy for their respective Grandchildren. Now my wife's sister is a little older so her Grandchildren are older than ours. She was saying how she thought she would give them gift cards. My immediate reaction was to say, I like getting them but I don't like giving them. If you are going to give a gift card why not just give the cash. This sparked quite a debate about whether giving gift cards are appropriate or not.
My side of the argument is that only in certain cases should they be given. If you really don't know the person on a personal level its' ok. If the person lives a distance away and shipping charges for a gift are too high a gift card may be appropriate.
When I was a child I had an Aunt that always gave us cash for Christmas. It came in those envelops that the bank handed out. The ones with the cutout in the center that showed you the presidents face. Although she lived in the same town as we did we rarely saw her and I'm sure she had no idea what children would want. She never had any children of her own and I don't believe she was around kids much. We were allowed to spend this cash anyway we wanted too. I don't remember a thing I ever purchased with this money. I do remember gifts that I received from another Aunt and Uncle however. That says something about giving cash or the modern version a gift card.
I try to find a gift for each person that I feel they will enjoy. The price of the gift is not the point but whether it is something that will use is most important. A gift is a personal thing and should reflect that you at least pay attention to them enough to make an informed choice. To me giving a gift card certainly doesn't qualify.
The best gift to me is a gift that you know they want but wouldn't buy for themselves. This can be very difficult depending on the person. Getting the gift takes a little thought and effort on your part. A gift card ?
I think not.

Tradition

With the coming of Christmas memories also arrive from the past. Each year a new memory is added and each year they all get harder to recall. Its' a catch twenty two I suppose but I hope to thwart this by writing some of mine down. At this time of year is when we would start decorating the house. Preparations had to be made. It began with the moving of the furniture to make a spot for the tree. It almost always went in the same location. In the corner by the staircase so it could be tied up and close to a receptacle. This was followed by a good cleaning of the house. You know; the curtains came down for washing, the windows washed inside and out, dust bunnies were chased out from behind the refrigerator and stove.
The majority of our decorations were inside the house. Only a few strings of lights would be put outside and maybe an evergreen tree in the yard. Nothing like what you see today. In fact quite spartan by todays' standards. But inside the whole downstairs of the house was transformed. There were wreaths, garland, bells and Santa Claus everywhere.
Growing up one of my major jobs in all this was to get the Princess Pine,Running Pine, some White Birch and pines. White pine was abundant. All of us boys took pride in knowing exactly were to go in the woods to secure these essential holiday accessories. The Princess Pine and Running pine were pretty close together. If luck was on your side you could get some princess pine with the tops still on. The deer love to eat those Little brown tops off the Princess Pine. The Running pine you just had to grab and pull on it. Like a rope it wound through the underbrush and you never knew where the end would take you. The white Birch was in a different location altogether. This was going to be used to make a yule log and if some could be had with sap running out burned in the fireplace for the many different colors it would show. We never cut down the whole tree. A branch of the right size was all that was needed. Some years you might find a fallen tree and if it was fairly recent you could use that.
running pine

princess pine
I remember all this with a longing to do it all again. I know that I can't and that probably all the area where we got the Birch and pine has been developed. The Princess Pine and Running Pine are in an area that is now a preserve so I'm sure it is safe. Its' a comforting thought to me somehow. I did have a yule log made from white birch but the bark fell off a few years ago. I'm thinking I may go in search of some to make another. Maybe I can teach the Grandkids about that.

Mortality

The older we get the faster time goes. This old adage is used frequently by my Mom. When I was younger I really didn't understand it. Now,unfortunately,I do. I was listening to the news and the man was talking about social security. He was saying how if nothing changes the system will be broke in 27 years.
I thought, man that isn't very far off. Twenty seven years isn't all that long. Then I thought about how when I was  twenty, twenty seven years seemed like a lifetime. And how when you were in school summer break seemed so long but in reality was only about two months. I remember thinking I would never be old enough to get that drivers license.
Now having reached the ripe old age of  fifty six, weeks and months fly by. A year doesn't seem like a real long time. I wonder if it just because you develop patience over the years ? I'm wondering where this year went. Seems like we just celebrated the fourth of July and now its' time to hang the Christmas decorations. Yup.I know what Mom is saying now. A more sobering thought did occur to me as well. The Man said twenty seven years, wonder if I'll even be around ? That would make me 83 and if you go by the average life span for a man in the United States  well   I've got plenty of time. Time flies  when you're having fun !

Just Sayin'

Working in the retail industry, which I haven't done since high school,I'm getting new insights into people and products. Some are interesting, some amusing and some puzzling. While putting products on the shelves I often read the packaging. Its' a marvel the different ways the products are described. I know the companies spend millions to figure out how to advertise their product and get us to purchase them but in some cases I wonder about the thought process.
There are many sizes available. Family size, meal size, snack size, party size, and personal size to name a few.
My personal favorite is in the candy section, fun size candy bars, the implication here that other sizes wouldn't be fun. A lot of the products tell you they are a good source of vitamins and minerals. Most will also say they are essential vitamins and minerals. I thought they all were essential but apparently not.
People are fun to watch. Almost all women will check the date on the milk but hardly ever  a man. Everybody checks the eggs for breakage but only a few check the date. Some study the different choices for the best deal while others just grab and go. Watch people checking out produce sometime; it can be a hoot. Squeezing, sniffing and pulling back leaves are very popular methods.
The particular grocery I work in does not provide you with free bags. You can either purchase bags or use boxes that are provided free of charge. (Subject to availability). The most puzzling behaviour I have witnessed and not just by one individual but several involves this. After checking out they place their grocery items in the box and take them to their car. This is were the puzzling part comes in,they then take the separate items out of the box and place them in their vehicle. They do not have another box,bag or tote of any kind in the vehicle but just place the items loosely in there. I'm trying to figure out why. Could it be that you don't want the extra box around ? Are they carrying each item into the house and putting them away ? Its' a puzzle.
No matter.I do enjoy watching people and it can be quite entertaining. I'm sure some watch me and think the same as well.

What goes around

Wrote a blog about black Friday and the holiday season in general. As I was writing my thoughts wandered off track a little,as they are prone to do,and I thought how things repeat themselves. We are all familar with this theory. What is touted as a new innovation is just an reinvention of an old concept.
I mentioned shopping in general. How we did most of our shopping with the Sears Christmas Wish book and J.C.Penny. Now,I hear a lot of shopping is done online. This is where I started to wander a bit. They are very similar practices. We would look through those catalouges at all the fantastic items available. Carefully reading the descriptions. It was an exciting pastime. The pages would be marked, items circled and notes written in the margins. Subtle hints to other potential shoppers as to what our selection would be. Sounds like browsing to me. Once all the selections were made you had to fill out the order form. This was a bit tedious.
Of course you had to have an account already established with the company. A revolving charge was the most common. You did however have years to pay for your gifts. Now you need a credit card, same thing.
If the items were from Sears or Pennys they could be picked up at the local store in most cases. They could be shipped directly to your door but that wasn't as common a practice. The local store would call you when your items came in. Now they are sent straight to your address.
Today the selection is much larger and the ordering process streamlined but the concept is the same. Shop at home ! Stores have grown in size over the years to the point of being almost too large to shop. I see a return to the older ways coming as the cost of maintaining these expansive stores rise. Goes back to the old adage,What goes around.

Tis the Season

I have never been much of a shopper. I guess its' a gender thing. The biggest shopping day of the year looms large on the horizon and I just find it annoying. When did this madness start ? It has its' roots in the 1960's.
Black Friday referred to the time when a business went from red ink to black. The name has changed meaning for most of us though. The crowds lined up outside waiting for that one item. It is like a shark feeding frenzy ! We have all heard the stories of people being injured and in at least one case killed. Crazy.
I hear that now some of this is shifting to the internet. You can buy the sale items online and avoid the life threatening crowds. Sounds good to me.
Although I was young it all makes me nostalgic for earlier times. Back in the days when we had Thanksgiving and Santa Claus made his first appearance at the Macys' Thanksgiving Day parade. His appearance signaled the start of the holiday season. Most returned to work on Friday. If you went to the stores early you would see the employees putting up the Christmas decorations and holiday music could be heard. Christmas sales would be advertised. You could feel the season in the air. It was a wonderful life. There was a miracle on 34th street. Charlie Brown got his tree. Burl Ives narrated Rudolf.
Having grown up in a rural area most of the shopping was done with the Sears catalogue or J C Penny.
Smaller gifts were purchased uptown at the jewelery store,5&10 or clothing stores. Well they say you can't go back and that is true but I sure wish we could. I wish my Grandchildren could experience the Holiday the way I did. I'm sure they will say the same thing when they have children of their own.

Good Food and Great Deserts

Thanksgiving dinner. At our home when I was growing up it was always about three in the afternoon.
Prior to dinner you picked at snacks, celery with cream cheese, celery with peanut butter, crackers and cheese, usually the cheese ball made its' appearance along with the sliced cracker barrel cheese. Olives, grapes, dates (ugh) assorted nuts. Chips and dip. Deviled eggs. Little sandwiches with no crust on the bread. The Macys' parade would be on TV and everyone waited for the appearance of Santa Claus. Back then you rarely saw him before that. On a few occasions we had other family members over for dinner but it was not a traditional thing at our home. My Moms' family may attend and I remember once my fathers' brother and his family being there. The big family gathering was something we thought only happened on TV.
It was always a happy time and everyone in the holiday spirit. My older brothers may have gone hunting earlier but I don't remember them bringing anything home. I can remember there being snow on the ground.
My father would be around the house, not working on any project, which was very rare. He would even be wearing dress clothes ! It was his job to make the gravy ! He would also help smash the potatoes. Didn't use any electric mixer back then so you used the potato masher.
When the time arrived for dinner the tv was shut off. We gathered around the table to begin our feast. At this time it became a little awkward as we had to decide who was going to say grace. Now Mom and us kids went to church every Sunday. My father very rarely and only if it was a very special occasion. The result was always the same, one of us kids would say the grace. Looking back I wonder why it was such an awkward thing for us to do. It was the only time in the year our family said grace together. I still don't really understand why that was. As I said we all attended church regularly. My father wasn't anti religion or anything. I guess it was just the fact that you had to say it out loud. As a kid I was afraid I'd mess it up,how exactly,I don't know.
Thats' the way I remember Thanksgiving going at my childhood home. I very pleasant time spent with family.
Good food and great deserts.

The Campout

My grandson wanted to go camping but I discovered the campgrounds are all closed for the season. Bummer ! Guess there are a bunch of fair weather campers around these parts. No matter,we just pitched our tent in the backyard and got with it. Raking the leaves up into a pile we cleared a spot out for the fire.
Being the diligent campers that we are we first set up the tent and unrolled the sleeping bags. We carefully placed our food supplies ( hot dogs,a chicken and marshmallows) inside the tent for safekeeping.
Next came the fire. In order to contain this inferno and prevent its' spread and burning of the lawn we built it inside an old grill cover set on blocks. This was an old Indian trick I learned from an old Indian. A windstorm a few days prior provided us with plenty of firewood. The fire started, we set to making a bed of coals to roast our chicken. Working together we constructed a rotisserie. All this activity made us hungry so a few hot dogs were roasted over the flames and eaten right off the stick. Delicious.
After a bit we decided the fire was ready. The chicken,it was a really wild one that took great skill to capture, was trussed up for roasting. Mark was in charge of cooking that bird ! It was carefully rotated to ensure even cooking. Later a coating of barbecue sauce was added.
Now doesn't that make your mouth water ? After having our dinner darkness began to set in. The chicken done we stoked the fire back up to roast some marshmallows. There is just something special about a fire in the darkness. The smell of the woodsmoke and the crackling of the flames give you that old time feeling. Strange considering I've never lived in the old times ( or have I ).
Our supply of firewood exhausted we decided to turn in for the night. Making sure the fire was extinguished into the tent we went. Lying in our sleeping bags we talked about the day. What a wonderful time we had. In the spring we will go camping again. Unless, well Mark does want to know if you can camp in the snow >
Grandpa hasn't told Mark about the Donner party yet so we'll see.

new tech

Ever notice how every time someone invents some new technology that has great potential for good the first thing that happens is someone else figures out a way to use it for bad. Take cell phones for instance. A wonderful device that has the potential to be a real lifesaver. Didn't take people long to figure out a way to abuse it. Next thing you knew you were getting all kinds of calls for all kinds of things. I'm forever getting a pix or flix message and my phone won't even accept them. The cell phone companies almost run some people into bankruptcy ! The plans were so complicated nobody could figure them out. Now they have plans to include all your children and make it seem like if you don't you are endangering your children. Wouldn't have anything to do with potential new customers would it ? The abuse is so bad we had to make laws governing their use.
The Internet is another fine example. The information highway. It quickly became a highway full of very bad truck stops ! You have to have filters on your computer to try to block out this trash. Other rip off artists abound, the hackers and those that just lie to you online to gain whatever it is they desire. The Internet can be a very useful tool indeed but isn't it a shame that it also is a tool for the corrupt and downright evil people in the world.
I guess it is just human nature that some strive to do good while others constantly look for the shortcut. It has been that way since the beginning of time and I'm sure it will continue.

Expression

I just love different expressions. Different ways of conveying a thought. My Dad had quite a few of them.
Some I will share here, others I won't as they could be offensive to some. Other expressions I hear people use and have no idea of their roots but find them amusing. Language can be very colorful without being vulgar.
I give my father no credit for inventing these expressions but he used them a lot,
He is a half a bubble off of plumb.  ( not right in the head)
Get down on your prayer handles  ( on your knees)
A little light on your feet                  (gay)
He couldn't pour water out of a boot if the directions were on the heal  ( self explanatory)
An educated fool                       ( someone with a degree but lacking in common sense)
Three sheets to the wind              (drunk)
Its' snotty out on the water today  ( windy with a chop)
Slicker than snot on a doorknob   (self explanatory)

These are a few I heard him use often and when I was older he added a few more salty phrases. He was always careful not to use them in the presence of ladies or children. A practice I try to follow.

Some other expressions I find amusing are,
Three fries short of a happy meal
The light is on but nobody is home
The stairs don't reach the attic

I'm sure there are more but I am at a loss to remember them right now. I do think we tend to be less inventive in our descriptions today than in years past. Perhaps this has something to do with being politically correct. It also may be the result of the far more frequent use of obscenity to describe anything.  I do know that the descriptions my father used where not meant to be offensive to anyone but where just that; a description. I do think that these expressions just come naturally and not by a conscience effort. Why some endure and others do not I don't know. I keep listening though.

Anniversary

Been married for 26 years today ! Hooray ! 2.6 decades. 9490 days. It was on a Monday.
A great way to start a week. It was an excellent decision.
I have known others that didn't last as long and was thinking about that. I know the answer.
You marry someone because you love them. You stay married because you still love them. The question is why do you still love them ?
When you first fall in love everything about that person is new. You discover new things about them every day. You love spending your time together. You talk and share your thoughts and feelings. They say positive things about you and you them. They are supportive.
Over time you can become complacent. Start taking the other person for granted. It is not a conscious thing any more than falling in love. It just happens that way sometimes.
I'm still in love with my wife for the same reasons as I married her.
I find something new in her every day,I love spending time with her,we talk and share our experiences and she is supportive. What more could a man want ? That is all I need and I've been getting that for 26 years !
Looking forward to tomorrow and the following years.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SWEETHEART !

Experts

I've had several occupations in my life. They have been diverse thats' for sure. Was a stockboy at the local grocery. Worked after school at an Antiques store rewiring old lamps and polishing old brass beds. Spent the longest time in the Navy.Upholstered furniture and hung drapes and blinds. Worked as a maintenance mechanic at a flare company. Was the electrical department man at Lowes' home improvement store. Been a plumber. Operated a backhoe and drove a dump truck. Am licensed to operate a waste management system in the state of Maryland, licensed to operate water system as well.
I wouldn't say I was an expert at any of these. Reasonably proficient is a better description I think. I have always found it amusing that others assume you know so much about a occupation just because you are doing that. Take for instance when I was doing furniture and hanging curtains. Many people assumed I knew about interior decorating. I got asked for advice all the time. Advice is free and I always gave it. Whether it was good or bad is subjective at best. I usually repeated what I had heard the boss say. At the grocery you get asked all the time whether a product is good or bad. I haven't personally tried each product but can offer a guess. Working at Lowes I would get asked about electrical problems only to find out the person I am talking to doesn't have a clue about basic electricity. Those answers were very tricky because you don't want to get somebody killed.Always tried to tell them, tactfully, they should hire a pro.
Checking on someones' credentials is not always a reliable indicator of their knowledge or proficiency. I would prefer someone with credentials however. I have personally known a few with excellent credentials but wouldn't want them doing the job ! I try to keep in mind that the only difference between a professional and a amateur is the pro gets paid. Experts are another thing altogether. Me; I'm an expert at giving advice and voicing my opinion ! Just ask me.
