Cyber Monday

I already wrote about black Friday and now I keep hearing about Cyber Monday. All these great deals on line. Shoudn't most people be at work ? I'm sure no one would be shopping while at work ! I'd bet those deals will still be there on Tuesday. Some media person will have to coin a phrase for that.
This cyber Monday thing sounds like someone trying to make another quasi-holiday. I'm betting Hallmark will have a card for it next year. The bottom line here is they want you to spend your money and are hoping you can just use that credit card of yours. Relax and shop away till the card runs out.
I heard on the news how many millions have already been spent on holiday gifts. It is a staggering amount that I really can't wrap my mind around. I thought we were in a recession ? They say if we spend enough we can turn the economy around. I'd better take a course in economics because I can't figure out how going into deeper debt improves our current situation. It is all very confusing to this simple country boy.
The period of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas should just be called the shopping season. Most shoppers are not too jolly and very few I think really enjoy it. How can you with the crowds and that sense of urgency that is in the air? A lot of people are stressing out. A complusion to buy everyone a gift when you really can't afford it is not a good feeling at all. That may be the reason for the rise in Gift card sales I touched upon yesterday.
Maybe we should just have "cash Wednesday" where you give everyone some cash and say Happy Holidays. You know its' not correct to say Merry Christmas anymore, but thats' another blog.
I just get annoyed with all this hype to spend, spend, spend. The retailers would have you believe you can buy a great Christmas. You can't !

Getting the Gift

I was shopping with my wife and her sister. They were discussing what to buy for their respective Grandchildren. Now my wife's sister is a little older so her Grandchildren are older than ours. She was saying how she thought she would give them gift cards. My immediate reaction was to say, I like getting them but I don't like giving them. If you are going to give a gift card why not just give the cash. This sparked quite a debate about whether giving gift cards are appropriate or not.
My side of the argument is that only in certain cases should they be given. If you really don't know the person on a personal level its' ok. If the person lives a distance away and shipping charges for a gift are too high a gift card may be appropriate.
When I was a child I had an Aunt that always gave us cash for Christmas. It came in those envelops that the bank handed out. The ones with the cutout in the center that showed you the presidents face. Although she lived in the same town as we did we rarely saw her and I'm sure she had no idea what children would want. She never had any children of her own and I don't believe she was around kids much. We were allowed to spend this cash anyway we wanted too. I don't remember a thing I ever purchased with this money. I do remember gifts that I received from another Aunt and Uncle however. That says something about giving cash or the modern version a gift card.
I try to find a gift for each person that I feel they will enjoy. The price of the gift is not the point but whether it is something that will use is most important. A gift is a personal thing and should reflect that you at least pay attention to them enough to make an informed choice. To me giving a gift card certainly doesn't qualify.
The best gift to me is a gift that you know they want but wouldn't buy for themselves. This can be very difficult depending on the person. Getting the gift takes a little thought and effort on your part. A gift card ?
I think not.

Tradition

With the coming of Christmas memories also arrive from the past. Each year a new memory is added and each year they all get harder to recall. Its' a catch twenty two I suppose but I hope to thwart this by writing some of mine down. At this time of year is when we would start decorating the house. Preparations had to be made. It began with the moving of the furniture to make a spot for the tree. It almost always went in the same location. In the corner by the staircase so it could be tied up and close to a receptacle. This was followed by a good cleaning of the house. You know; the curtains came down for washing, the windows washed inside and out, dust bunnies were chased out from behind the refrigerator and stove.
The majority of our decorations were inside the house. Only a few strings of lights would be put outside and maybe an evergreen tree in the yard. Nothing like what you see today. In fact quite spartan by todays' standards. But inside the whole downstairs of the house was transformed. There were wreaths, garland, bells and Santa Claus everywhere.
Growing up one of my major jobs in all this was to get the Princess Pine,Running Pine, some White Birch and pines. White pine was abundant. All of us boys took pride in knowing exactly were to go in the woods to secure these essential holiday accessories. The Princess Pine and Running pine were pretty close together. If luck was on your side you could get some princess pine with the tops still on. The deer love to eat those Little brown tops off the Princess Pine. The Running pine you just had to grab and pull on it. Like a rope it wound through the underbrush and you never knew where the end would take you. The white Birch was in a different location altogether. This was going to be used to make a yule log and if some could be had with sap running out burned in the fireplace for the many different colors it would show. We never cut down the whole tree. A branch of the right size was all that was needed. Some years you might find a fallen tree and if it was fairly recent you could use that.

I remember all this with a longing to do it all again. I know that I can't and that probably all the area where we got the Birch and pine has been developed. The Princess Pine and Running Pine are in an area that is now a preserve so I'm sure it is safe. Its' a comforting thought to me somehow. I did have a yule log made from white birch but the bark fell off a few years ago. I'm thinking I may go in search of some to make another. Maybe I can teach the Grandkids about that.

Mortality

The older we get the faster time goes. This old adage is used frequently by my Mom. When I was younger I really didn't understand it. Now,unfortunately,I do. I was listening to the news and the man was talking about social security. He was saying how if nothing changes the system will be broke in 27 years.
I thought, man that isn't very far off. Twenty seven years isn't all that long. Then I thought about how when I was  twenty, twenty seven years seemed like a lifetime. And how when you were in school summer break seemed so long but in reality was only about two months. I remember thinking I would never be old enough to get that drivers license.
Now having reached the ripe old age of  fifty six, weeks and months fly by. A year doesn't seem like a real long time. I wonder if it just because you develop patience over the years ? I'm wondering where this year went. Seems like we just celebrated the fourth of July and now its' time to hang the Christmas decorations. Yup.I know what Mom is saying now. A more sobering thought did occur to me as well. The Man said twenty seven years, wonder if I'll even be around ? That would make me 83 and if you go by the average life span for a man in the United States  well   I've got plenty of time. Time flies  when you're having fun !

Just Sayin'

Working in the retail industry, which I haven't done since high school,I'm getting new insights into people and products. Some are interesting, some amusing and some puzzling. While putting products on the shelves I often read the packaging. Its' a marvel the different ways the products are described. I know the companies spend millions to figure out how to advertise their product and get us to purchase them but in some cases I wonder about the thought process.
There are many sizes available. Family size, meal size, snack size, party size, and personal size to name a few.
My personal favorite is in the candy section, fun size candy bars, the implication here that other sizes wouldn't be fun. A lot of the products tell you they are a good source of vitamins and minerals. Most will also say they are essential vitamins and minerals. I thought they all were essential but apparently not.
People are fun to watch. Almost all women will check the date on the milk but hardly ever  a man. Everybody checks the eggs for breakage but only a few check the date. Some study the different choices for the best deal while others just grab and go. Watch people checking out produce sometime; it can be a hoot. Squeezing, sniffing and pulling back leaves are very popular methods.
The particular grocery I work in does not provide you with free bags. You can either purchase bags or use boxes that are provided free of charge. (Subject to availability). The most puzzling behaviour I have witnessed and not just by one individual but several involves this. After checking out they place their grocery items in the box and take them to their car. This is were the puzzling part comes in,they then take the separate items out of the box and place them in their vehicle. They do not have another box,bag or tote of any kind in the vehicle but just place the items loosely in there. I'm trying to figure out why. Could it be that you don't want the extra box around ? Are they carrying each item into the house and putting them away ? Its' a puzzle.
No matter.I do enjoy watching people and it can be quite entertaining. I'm sure some watch me and think the same as well.

What goes around

Wrote a blog about black Friday and the holiday season in general. As I was writing my thoughts wandered off track a little,as they are prone to do,and I thought how things repeat themselves. We are all familar with this theory. What is touted as a new innovation is just an reinvention of an old concept.
I mentioned shopping in general. How we did most of our shopping with the Sears Christmas Wish book and J.C.Penny. Now,I hear a lot of shopping is done online. This is where I started to wander a bit. They are very similar practices. We would look through those catalouges at all the fantastic items available. Carefully reading the descriptions. It was an exciting pastime. The pages would be marked, items circled and notes written in the margins. Subtle hints to other potential shoppers as to what our selection would be. Sounds like browsing to me. Once all the selections were made you had to fill out the order form. This was a bit tedious.
Of course you had to have an account already established with the company. A revolving charge was the most common. You did however have years to pay for your gifts. Now you need a credit card, same thing.
If the items were from Sears or Pennys they could be picked up at the local store in most cases. They could be shipped directly to your door but that wasn't as common a practice. The local store would call you when your items came in. Now they are sent straight to your address.
Today the selection is much larger and the ordering process streamlined but the concept is the same. Shop at home ! Stores have grown in size over the years to the point of being almost too large to shop. I see a return to the older ways coming as the cost of maintaining these expansive stores rise. Goes back to the old adage,What goes around.

Tis the Season

I have never been much of a shopper. I guess its' a gender thing. The biggest shopping day of the year looms large on the horizon and I just find it annoying. When did this madness start ? It has its' roots in the 1960's.
Black Friday referred to the time when a business went from red ink to black. The name has changed meaning for most of us though. The crowds lined up outside waiting for that one item. It is like a shark feeding frenzy ! We have all heard the stories of people being injured and in at least one case killed. Crazy.
I hear that now some of this is shifting to the internet. You can buy the sale items online and avoid the life threatening crowds. Sounds good to me.
Although I was young it all makes me nostalgic for earlier times. Back in the days when we had Thanksgiving and Santa Claus made his first appearance at the Macys' Thanksgiving Day parade. His appearance signaled the start of the holiday season. Most returned to work on Friday. If you went to the stores early you would see the employees putting up the Christmas decorations and holiday music could be heard. Christmas sales would be advertised. You could feel the season in the air. It was a wonderful life. There was a miracle on 34th street. Charlie Brown got his tree. Burl Ives narrated Rudolf.
Having grown up in a rural area most of the shopping was done with the Sears catalogue or J C Penny.
Smaller gifts were purchased uptown at the jewelery store,5&10 or clothing stores. Well they say you can't go back and that is true but I sure wish we could. I wish my Grandchildren could experience the Holiday the way I did. I'm sure they will say the same thing when they have children of their own.

Good Food and Great Deserts

Thanksgiving dinner. At our home when I was growing up it was always about three in the afternoon.
Prior to dinner you picked at snacks, celery with cream cheese, celery with peanut butter, crackers and cheese, usually the cheese ball made its' appearance along with the sliced cracker barrel cheese. Olives, grapes, dates (ugh) assorted nuts. Chips and dip. Deviled eggs. Little sandwiches with no crust on the bread. The Macys' parade would be on TV and everyone waited for the appearance of Santa Claus. Back then you rarely saw him before that. On a few occasions we had other family members over for dinner but it was not a traditional thing at our home. My Moms' family may attend and I remember once my fathers' brother and his family being there. The big family gathering was something we thought only happened on TV.
It was always a happy time and everyone in the holiday spirit. My older brothers may have gone hunting earlier but I don't remember them bringing anything home. I can remember there being snow on the ground.
My father would be around the house, not working on any project, which was very rare. He would even be wearing dress clothes ! It was his job to make the gravy ! He would also help smash the potatoes. Didn't use any electric mixer back then so you used the potato masher.
When the time arrived for dinner the tv was shut off. We gathered around the table to begin our feast. At this time it became a little awkward as we had to decide who was going to say grace. Now Mom and us kids went to church every Sunday. My father very rarely and only if it was a very special occasion. The result was always the same, one of us kids would say the grace. Looking back I wonder why it was such an awkward thing for us to do. It was the only time in the year our family said grace together. I still don't really understand why that was. As I said we all attended church regularly. My father wasn't anti religion or anything. I guess it was just the fact that you had to say it out loud. As a kid I was afraid I'd mess it up,how exactly,I don't know.
Thats' the way I remember Thanksgiving going at my childhood home. I very pleasant time spent with family.
Good food and great deserts.

The Campout

My grandson wanted to go camping but I discovered the campgrounds are all closed for the season. Bummer ! Guess there are a bunch of fair weather campers around these parts. No matter,we just pitched our tent in the backyard and got with it. Raking the leaves up into a pile we cleared a spot out for the fire.
Being the diligent campers that we are we first set up the tent and unrolled the sleeping bags. We carefully placed our food supplies ( hot dogs,a chicken and marshmallows) inside the tent for safekeeping.
Next came the fire. In order to contain this inferno and prevent its' spread and burning of the lawn we built it inside an old grill cover set on blocks. This was an old Indian trick I learned from an old Indian. A windstorm a few days prior provided us with plenty of firewood. The fire started, we set to making a bed of coals to roast our chicken. Working together we constructed a rotisserie. All this activity made us hungry so a few hot dogs were roasted over the flames and eaten right off the stick. Delicious.
After a bit we decided the fire was ready. The chicken,it was a really wild one that took great skill to capture, was trussed up for roasting. Mark was in charge of cooking that bird ! It was carefully rotated to ensure even cooking. Later a coating of barbecue sauce was added.
Now doesn't that make your mouth water ? After having our dinner darkness began to set in. The chicken done we stoked the fire back up to roast some marshmallows. There is just something special about a fire in the darkness. The smell of the woodsmoke and the crackling of the flames give you that old time feeling. Strange considering I've never lived in the old times ( or have I ).
Our supply of firewood exhausted we decided to turn in for the night. Making sure the fire was extinguished into the tent we went. Lying in our sleeping bags we talked about the day. What a wonderful time we had. In the spring we will go camping again. Unless, well Mark does want to know if you can camp in the snow >
Grandpa hasn't told Mark about the Donner party yet so we'll see.

new tech

Ever notice how every time someone invents some new technology that has great potential for good the first thing that happens is someone else figures out a way to use it for bad. Take cell phones for instance. A wonderful device that has the potential to be a real lifesaver. Didn't take people long to figure out a way to abuse it. Next thing you knew you were getting all kinds of calls for all kinds of things. I'm forever getting a pix or flix message and my phone won't even accept them. The cell phone companies almost run some people into bankruptcy ! The plans were so complicated nobody could figure them out. Now they have plans to include all your children and make it seem like if you don't you are endangering your children. Wouldn't have anything to do with potential new customers would it ? The abuse is so bad we had to make laws governing their use.
The Internet is another fine example. The information highway. It quickly became a highway full of very bad truck stops ! You have to have filters on your computer to try to block out this trash. Other rip off artists abound, the hackers and those that just lie to you online to gain whatever it is they desire. The Internet can be a very useful tool indeed but isn't it a shame that it also is a tool for the corrupt and downright evil people in the world.
I guess it is just human nature that some strive to do good while others constantly look for the shortcut. It has been that way since the beginning of time and I'm sure it will continue.

Expression

I just love different expressions. Different ways of conveying a thought. My Dad had quite a few of them.
Some I will share here, others I won't as they could be offensive to some. Other expressions I hear people use and have no idea of their roots but find them amusing. Language can be very colorful without being vulgar.
I give my father no credit for inventing these expressions but he used them a lot,
He is a half a bubble off of plumb.  ( not right in the head)
Get down on your prayer handles  ( on your knees)
A little light on your feet                  (gay)
He couldn't pour water out of a boot if the directions were on the heal  ( self explanatory)
An educated fool                       ( someone with a degree but lacking in common sense)
Three sheets to the wind              (drunk)
Its' snotty out on the water today  ( windy with a chop)
Slicker than snot on a doorknob   (self explanatory)

These are a few I heard him use often and when I was older he added a few more salty phrases. He was always careful not to use them in the presence of ladies or children. A practice I try to follow.

Some other expressions I find amusing are,
Three fries short of a happy meal
The light is on but nobody is home
The stairs don't reach the attic

I'm sure there are more but I am at a loss to remember them right now. I do think we tend to be less inventive in our descriptions today than in years past. Perhaps this has something to do with being politically correct. It also may be the result of the far more frequent use of obscenity to describe anything.  I do know that the descriptions my father used where not meant to be offensive to anyone but where just that; a description. I do think that these expressions just come naturally and not by a conscience effort. Why some endure and others do not I don't know. I keep listening though.

Anniversary

Been married for 26 years today ! Hooray ! 2.6 decades. 9490 days. It was on a Monday.
A great way to start a week. It was an excellent decision.
I have known others that didn't last as long and was thinking about that. I know the answer.
You marry someone because you love them. You stay married because you still love them. The question is why do you still love them ?
When you first fall in love everything about that person is new. You discover new things about them every day. You love spending your time together. You talk and share your thoughts and feelings. They say positive things about you and you them. They are supportive.
Over time you can become complacent. Start taking the other person for granted. It is not a conscious thing any more than falling in love. It just happens that way sometimes.
I'm still in love with my wife for the same reasons as I married her.
I find something new in her every day,I love spending time with her,we talk and share our experiences and she is supportive. What more could a man want ? That is all I need and I've been getting that for 26 years !
Looking forward to tomorrow and the following years.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SWEETHEART !

Experts

I've had several occupations in my life. They have been diverse thats' for sure. Was a stockboy at the local grocery. Worked after school at an Antiques store rewiring old lamps and polishing old brass beds. Spent the longest time in the Navy.Upholstered furniture and hung drapes and blinds. Worked as a maintenance mechanic at a flare company. Was the electrical department man at Lowes' home improvement store. Been a plumber. Operated a backhoe and drove a dump truck. Am licensed to operate a waste management system in the state of Maryland, licensed to operate water system as well.
I wouldn't say I was an expert at any of these. Reasonably proficient is a better description I think. I have always found it amusing that others assume you know so much about a occupation just because you are doing that. Take for instance when I was doing furniture and hanging curtains. Many people assumed I knew about interior decorating. I got asked for advice all the time. Advice is free and I always gave it. Whether it was good or bad is subjective at best. I usually repeated what I had heard the boss say. At the grocery you get asked all the time whether a product is good or bad. I haven't personally tried each product but can offer a guess. Working at Lowes I would get asked about electrical problems only to find out the person I am talking to doesn't have a clue about basic electricity. Those answers were very tricky because you don't want to get somebody killed.Always tried to tell them, tactfully, they should hire a pro.
Checking on someones' credentials is not always a reliable indicator of their knowledge or proficiency. I would prefer someone with credentials however. I have personally known a few with excellent credentials but wouldn't want them doing the job ! I try to keep in mind that the only difference between a professional and a amateur is the pro gets paid. Experts are another thing altogether. Me; I'm an expert at giving advice and voicing my opinion ! Just ask me.

puzzled

A news item both sad and inspirational caught my attention. I'm sure you have heard about this by now. A 13 year old boy was told by school officials to remove the American flag from his bicycle ! He was told it may be offensive to others. I was dumbstruck. How could this be? Where is this,California ?
This young man had been flying his flag on his bicycle for two months prior to being told to remove it. According to school officials other students had complained about it. These officials said they were concerned about racial tensions or uprisings. Incredible ! They further stated they were only thinking of the safety of the students.
The sad part of this incident is twofold. First that anyone would tell a 13 year old child that flying an American flag,in America,is not allowed. I have given it much thought and can not think of any situation were it would be inappropriate. Secondly, that school officials would allow,if only for a moment, that school policy be dictated by  students. It is akin to allowing the country to be run by terrorists !
The inspirational part of the story is where over 100 people escorted this boy to school. They said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Star Spangled Banner when they arrived at the school. The young man said he flew the flag to honor veterans like his Grandfather. Another inspiration to me is the fact the family of this young man has stated they will not sue or seek any repercussions against the school officials.
How any school officials could become so misguided as to try to ban the flag on campus is way beyond my comprehension. It is my hope they feel sufficiently humiliated that this lesson stays with them.
The policy has been rescinded ! I am both amazed and infuriated that this incident even occurred. What action is being taken about the students complaining ? None that I have read about. There was a brief mention of an incident earlier in the year concerning cinco de mayo. That would lead me to believe it involves some of our Mexican immigrants. The state of California just ruled that illegal immigrants, note ILLEGAL,that have attended at least three years of high school in the state are eligible to attend state colleges. They also must receive the resident tuition rate. I'd bet they are not complaining about that !

Just an observation

Is it me or has America become a more aggressive society ? Working in the retail industry I see hundreds of people every day. The majority of them are not smiling but have a rather determined look to them. This is especially true among the younger crowd. It is more of an attitude I think than physical aggression. In general they are far more vocal about their dislikes.
Consider this. Baseball was/is the national pastime. It was always well attended and young boys looked there for heroes. Now,though unofficial, its' football. Definitely a difference in attitude and aggression. Also now we have mixed martial arts where men fight in a cage while we cheer. Remind you of anything ?
The national standard on morality is quite a bit different than it was a few decades ago as well. Its' all about tolerance and understanding. Taxes are high everywhere and our infrastructure is beginning to decay.
We are waging war in several places at once. The country is being overrun with outsiders.
I am by no means a historian but only a brief read of Roman history shows interesting parallels. Are we going the way of the Romans ? No,I don't believe that because we are a democracy and changes can be made.
I think the country as a whole needs to take a chill pill. Relax a little and look at things logically. An old adage comes to mind.  You can't please all of the people all of the time.
Smile, relax and be kind to your fellow man. Honey catches more flies than vinegar !

Its' a Classic

Went grocery shopping the other day and noticed something I hadn't really paid attention to before. A lot of the snack items I enjoy are now labeled,"classic." Those thin pretzel sticks, classic style, regular potato chips;classic, even Coca Cola is classic. Made me think of all the other things I like that are now considered classic. Muscle cars of the sixties. The music I listened to in High school. The style of clothing I wear. Even some of the food dishes I prepare at home are now classic dishes. You can buy just about anything and find it in a classic edition. When it comes to marketing, things become classic pretty quickly.
I looked up the definition of classic in the dictionary. On line though not your classic dictionary. A classic is, of the highest quality, lasting value, authoritative and perfect as a standard of its' kind, always fashionable. It is also synonymous with, timeless, immortal, ageless, lasting, abiding and unforgettable.
After reading that it makes you wonder why one would want anything else. I want the classic. Seems like it would be a pretty tough propostion to make anything that could compete with a classic. But then again we are just never satisfied are we ? Always looking for something better. Its' human nature and can not be denied. For most of us though, we reach a certain point in our lives and become comfortable with certain items. It is at this point that something becomes a classic. Funny thing is, it is only classic to others not to us.
To us it is just the way we like it. I just like plain chips no other flavorings please, just coffee, no foam, nuts or anything else in there and jeans that fit right.
Now take my wife for instance, "She's a Classic." Fits the definition alright but I had best not let her hear that !

A Life Lesson

Some lessons you learn when you are very young and never forget. You are glad for the lesson but the method just kinda sticks with you. In the more recent enlightened times that we live in some would say the method was cruel and caused long term psychological damage. I don't agree with that. I just think it makes for an amusing story.
It was a rare occasion for us kids. Our father had all four of us with him without my mother being present. This didn't happen often as Dad was always working and weekends were spent working on our home, his boat,or a myriad of other projects. It was a warm summer day and we were all riding in the car together. There was no air conditioning in the car as this was a luxury back in the day. We were returning from visiting some of my fathers friends, pretty boring stuff, when an even rarer thing happened. My father says,"lets' stop for ice cream." Now let me tell you this was something ! A euphoria spread over us kids. Stopping at the local corner grocery he went inside and returned with ice cream cones for all. Passing them out he handed me the one he had selected for me. Unwrapping the paper I saw that it was strawberry. At this point things started heading south. Strawberry is not one of my favorites and I just felt I had to say something. " I don't like strawberry." My father,in a calm voice says to me," so you don't want that cone?" I replied that I didn't.
Big mistake ! Dad took that cone and tossed it out the window. There it landed upside down on the hot pavement. My two brothers and sister said nothing(being older and wiser)and quietly ate their cones. I just sat there and watched mine melt. I was smart enough to not say a word but suffered in silence. LESSON LEARNED. After that I always took whatever was offered and was thankful for that. It was then I learned about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Old wives tales

We have all heard them. Some have proven to be true and some are questionable at best. Others are just pure fantasy. I was talking with a co worker yesterday when he told me one I hadn't heard before.
If your cows are lying down in the morning it is going to rain that day. If they lay down at any other time it doesn't mean a thing. I chuckled at that but having had very little expericence with cows, except for eating them,I have no idea about the validity of the statement. It did bring to mind a few I have heard.
Don't leave your whites out in the moonlight or they will turn yellow.
If that happens lay them on the grass in the morning dew and they will bleach white again.
Just before it rains you can smell it in the air. This one has some truth as Niacin is realeased in the atmosphere . At least that what Mr. Science says.
When I was small my Mom hung clothes out to dry.In the winter they would freeze. Don't bend the arms or legs of the clothing they might break off. Just a tale.
The leaves on a tree curl up before a rain.
You hear no birds before a storm.
Wooly worms predict the severity of winter.
A high forehead means higher intelligence.
Wet feet will give you a cold.
Sitting too close to the TV will ruin your eyesight.
If your right ear itches someone is saying something nice about you,if your left bad.
A bar of soap inbetween your bedsheets prevents leg cramps.
These are just some examples and I'm sure you can add a few of your own. I do find it interesting when science proves the validity of some of these sayings. Just goes to show that we aren't as smart as we like to think. The old timers knew things just from experience and no proof was required.

Get Excited

Let me start by saying I'm not a huge fan of football. I only have a passing interest in the sport and baseball season is over. Watching basketball never did much for me either.
I do watch the Baltimore Ravens games whenever I am in the mood. Purple Friday is a big deal in these parts. That is were you wear something purple on Friday to work or whatever. Support your team !
The thing that strikes me the most is the celebration following almost every good play ! These men are professional athletes so it shouldn't come as a big surprise when they make the play. The receiver catches the ball and does a little dance. The quarterback throws a good pass, high fives all around. They even had to make rules about excessive celebrating !
It did occur to me however what if we all got as excited about our on the job accomplishments. That oil is changed ! Do a little dance. That burger is cooked. High five. Our workaday lives would be more enjoyable if we celebrated more. Sales are up, pile on the office manager. At the end of the week we could pour a bucket of gatorade over somebodys head .
I suppose it has something to do with all that adrenaline running through their system. Other sports don't seem to celebrate quite as much or as often. In baseball an occasional high five for a home run or a slap on the back is about it. Unless you win a playoff game then they celebrate a little more. Don't watch other sports enough to make an informed comment on their rituals.
I don't know just seems to me like they are always surprised when the play goes right. It is good to be pleased with your work. I just wish I could get as excited every time I accomplished my job.

Veterans

Great Great Grandfather  Civil War

My Dad WW2

Uncle Alfred WW2

Its' Veterans day. A day set aside to remember those who have served and are still serving. Justly so and richly deserved. Every year it seems more businesses are giving out freebies to us Vets. Thank You for that whatever your motivation. As a twenty year veteran of the U.S.Navy a few things bother me.
First and foremost let me assure you I am no hero. It bugs me when people label every vet a hero. Ain't so and in my opinion cheapens those that are truly deserving of that title. Heroes don't want that title anyway and they would all tell you they were just doing what had to be done.
Next is the notion that everyone serving is doing so out of some deep patriotic desire. Nonsense. I love my country as much as the next man but joined the Navy out of economic necessity. Simple as that. I needed a job. I found the job not an unpleasant one and it did come with great benefits. A certain amount of  pride in this chosen profession helped as well.
I grimace when I hear people talk of the sacrifices Vets make like being away from home. Vets aren't the only ones doing that. Please don't put it in a context that I'm doing it because I choose to. Like everyone else I did what I had to do and it was just part of the job. Given the choice I would have stayed home !
Let me end by saying this, I am proud to have served my country and I thank you for acknowledging that.
To all the young men and women now serving, Godspeed, and I think of you all daily. May you be as fortunate as I was during my time.

Plans

My grandsons' fourth grade class took a field trip last week. They went to Baltimore for a short cruise on a steamship. Following that they also took a tour of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. A good time was had by all although the weather was a bit cold and windy. My grandson says the water was very rough.
He was also very impressed by the Naval Academy. It was about this that he spoke the most. A regular tour guide took them around and I was surprised to learn no one from the Navy addressed the children at all.
The Naval Academy is a very historic place and many traditions are followed there. John Paul Jones is entombed there as well. My grandson,Mark couldn't say enough about it and had many questions for me.
I'm retired from the Navy myself so I can speak about it with some knowledge. I was also stationed there for a short time. I didn't attend the Academy though was an enlisted man. Mark wanted to know how you get to go there. I explained about having to have excellant grades in school, being of excellant moral fiber, and having recommendations from civic leaders like your Pastor,Police Chief,or councilman. I also explained that you can recieve a recommendation from your state senator or congressman. They are allowed two each per year.
(Pretty sure about that but could be mistaken)
Yesterday morning when the kids were being dropped off Marks' mom,Maria handed me a letter. This letter was handwritten on yellow lined note paper. It began," Mr. Congressman." Mark had written this letter. He said he was practicing for the real letter to be written. In this letter he explained to the Congressman why he should be admitted to the Naval Academy. He has very good grades in school. He pays attention in class. He doesn't get into trouble. He plays soccer, baseball and can wrestle. These are all things he felt important but the most touching part of the letter said, I love America and am willing to take a punch for it. Also that his Grandpa was in the Navy and he thought he would continue the tradition.
Mark is a remarkable young man and I'm very proud of him. I'm sure by next week he will want to be a fireman or policeman but thats' fine. I just had to share this story. Its' a grandpa thing !

Characters

I am very proud of the fact that I grew up in a small town. I loved it then and love it now. Even though I no longer live there it is my home and will always remain so. That town made me who I am today. It is there that I learned my values. I was truly blessed to have been born and raised there.
One of the things I loved about my town was the way ,much like the mythical Mayberry from tv fame ,we had our town characters and embraced them. There were many characters about and they were tolerated and spoken of with a kind of affection. This attitude had been present in town since its' founding.
Songs were written about them, " Old Jeff Licketack from Soak Hide Dreen " and "Charlie Topping did the hopping while Rosie beat the drum" come to mind. Stories were told of their adventures and misadventures.
Some of the characters were what you would call Intellectualy Handicapped today but we just called them simple. That wasn't meant as a bad term either, just a description. I remember seeing a man that was referred to as Eel Spear. He rode a bicycle, just on the rims without tires, carrying an eel spear. Across soak hide road and down springy banks road to go eeling. He sold those eels as a means of support. Just one of many characters. Wimpy Payne was another character and his was a tragic tale. Moose Brown was another.
All the characters had one thing in common. They rarely broke any laws and those they did were not serious and usualy the result of drink or ignorance.
Today I think this tolerance is gone. Now we would either want to reform them or have them removed. The cast of characters has changed and I fear not for the better. The characters of old provided a comic relief to lifes everyday pressures. They were not belitttled,at least not to their face, and were helped along by most.
I wish a few characters lived in my new neighborhood. I kind of miss those folks.

More Identity Issues

I wrote earlier about a change of identity and how it changes over time, martial status and family ties.
This morning I read a blog by a friend that addressed an identity issue. In any small town there are different groupings of people depending on your social status or wealth. Maybe you are from the wrong side of the tracks. We all know what that implies but that is not to say you can not make good and move to the other side. Some people however will never recognize that and keep you in the old niche. Being wealthy can be a bad thing too,at least in the eyes of the less fortunate. We all know the image of the fat cat banker. Perceptions can be distorted and misunderstood. Yet we all want to belong in some group. We can either embrace the grouping we are in or try to become identified with another. It is a slippery path to follow for sure because perceptions of the group change over time. What was once a very special and elite group is now common. Social attitudes change rapidly.
I think a person needs to find their core identity and make peace with that. I identify myself with having grown up in a particular area in a particular town. I'm proud of that heritage. I don't attempt to identify myself in any other way or try to adopt a heritage that isn't mine. My heritage is not superior to any one Else's it is just mine !
Dr. Phil could do a show on this topic I'm sure. Someone said Be True to yourself and I concur with that statement.

Venting

The soccer season here in Caroline County is officially over today. My Grandson played for the local grocery store. Save-A-Lot was their sponsor. The kids chose their own name for the team and decided upon the Squirrels. It is difficult to figure the workings of the eight and nine year old mind ! Nevertheless the Squirrels it was.
At the very beginning of the season two children dropped out for their own reasons. The team needed an additional player and one boy was available. The paper work was filled out and submitted. The town representative for the soccer association reviewed this and approved the player. Now I need to explain that the ages for this group are eight and nine year olds. This boy had just turned ten but never played organized soccer prior to this so the Town rep approved this.
The team was formed and practicing begun. The team played 14 regular seasons games and went undefeated. On one occasion the opposing coach objected to the ten year old boy. Our coach offered to sit the young man out for the game. The other coach stated that it wasn't necessary but was letting us know he knew the boy was ten. The team never tried to keep that a secret.
This weekend the tournament began. The regular season record counts for nothing during this event. Three games are played on the first day with the winners advancing to the semi finals and finals on Sunday. The Save-A-Lot squirrels again went undefeated. The children were quite excited about advancing.
The last game was over about 1o'clock. Then it happened ! The coach gets a call from the tournament officials saying the team is disqualified for having a ten year old. Some other coach or coaches filed a complaint. They did offer to let the team play without the ten year old one buy in game. Yesterday we did have one kid that became sick so he wouldn't be able to play today. So now the team would be down two players and their entire season resting on one game. This would mean the team would have no players to act as subs.
It is my feeling that this is very unfair to the children. Granted, perhaps the town rep overstepped his authority in allowing the boy to play on the team.but this was no secret to anyone. They played an entire season with only one coach raising any objection at all. The tournament officials allowed the team to participate on the first day and only when the team wins is this brought out. Sounds like a little jealousy on someones part. How else can you explain it ? To do this to these young children is a travesty. Sure we all want to teach them fair play and sportsmanship but to pull the rug out from underneath their feet on a technicality ? Try explaining to a eight or nine year old why they can play an entire season,go undefeated, play three games in a tournament, again undefeated and not be allowed to compete in the final event !
The Caroline County Youth Soccer Association should be ashamed of themselves. Had they done their job this situation could have been avoided. To allow the team to play and then when they win make them ineligible. To top it off they offer to let the team play what may as well be a handicap match against the best teams to decide their season. Ridiculous.
The Save-A-Lot squirrels withdrew from the tournament. We are leaving with our heads held high knowing we did nothing wrong. We are also leaving with the knowledge that we defeated every team that stood before us. We beat them fair and square. Some other teams also had ten year olds but I guess they didn't win. Another team will get the championship but the Squirrels are the true champions !

Frost on the pumpkin

Got up and went to my truck. What is this stuff on the windshield ? FROST ! I'm surprised, why ? It is November. Strange how our minds work. I watch the weather report every day,I can feel the chill in the air,I even heard the warnings about bringing in your delicate plants yet I'm still surprised by the frost.
Now I'm rooting around in the tool box looking for that scraper. I know it is in there somewhere. A little dark out here too and it is almost eight o'clock. I can't see well enough to locate that danged scraper. Well, the frost isn't too thick I'll just use my drivers license. Now I'm feeling a little rushed this has thrown off my schedule. I'll have to start a little earlier tomorrow. Shift into winter mode. Better check the antifreeze too, been putting that off.
Frost,a minor inconvenience to be sure but I'm starting to miss just jumping in and going already. My truck is an older model so it does not have any of the recent features like remote starting. If I need to defrost I have to go to the truck and start it,turn on the defroster and just wait. Might as well just sit in the drive as go back in the house so you're sitting there with cold air blowing. I can see a light frost on the ground in some areas that makes you think about the coming snow, and you know its' coming. Wonder where that snow shovel is ? I'll have to look for that and get some ice melt too. Think I have a pair of gloves somewhere. Well, there is no big hurry snow is a ways off !
The windshield is defrosted and I can feel the warmth. It is going to be a nice day according to the weather man. Highs in the afternoon in the mid fifties I shouldn't need a jacket a sweatshirt will do. It sure was a hot summer this year these temperatures are quite pleasant. That early morning frost should kill all the germs drifting around in the air. Its' going to be a wonderful day ! I'll put that snow stuff on the to do list.

Tee Shirts

I wonder at what point in time the Tee shirt became the most widely worn piece of apparel. Somewhere, someone printed something on a white Tee shirt(formerly known as an undershirt) and Bang a revolution was born. Men,women and children all wear them. You can find them in every shop that sells clothing and in a lot of places that don't. Advertisers love them, sports teams adore them, shoot who doesn't like a good tee ? You can purchase them in all price ranges. Some people collect them. Hollywood stars wear them with a suit.
I haven't taken a survey but I think men wearing a white tee shirt under a dress shirt is getting to be the exception rather than the rule. In some circles it is considered a bit geeky, like buttoning the collar button. Now I think men would have far more tee shirts that are worn as shirts than undershirts. In some cases underwear, particulary boxers, are trying to creep out as well. Don't think they will ever fully emerge though.
I mentioned in one of  my previous blogs the wearing of pajamas as outerwear in public. Thought that might end with cold weather but today I saw flannel PJS'.
My guess is the wearing of a tee shirt as a regular shirt was the beginning of  informal America. Prior to that we called our elders Sir or Maam, held the door for the ladies, said excuse me (a lot) and thank you. Remember the story Clothes make the Man ? Its' proven time and again to be a truth that is unavoidable.
Wearing our tee shirts we can be cool, hip, counter culture, support our causes, raise awareness and be all that we can be ! An amazing garment for sure and deserving to be in the light of day. After all,James Dean and Fonzi wore them. Now as to Men wearing shorts all the time, another discussion another time. Not my generation ! And my Mom tells me ladies going from dresses and skirts to wearing slacks was quite a revolution in itself !

Taking the Call

Cell phones. Not too long ago James Bond was the only one that had one. I remember my brother having one that came in an attache case and you could sometimes even make a call. Very expensive to own and very expensive to use. A very handy device however. They have sure come a long way with that technology.
The problem,at least for me,is that most people have thrown out general courtesy when it comes to their use.
How many times have you been talking to someone when their cell phone rings ? OK not ringing but usually playing some song. The person answers that ring like a well trained dog ! Bam You are left standing there feeling awkward. I don't want to listen to your conversation. That would not be polite. Most of the time the other person doesn't even say excuse me while I take this call. Rude behaviour in my book. Makes me feel like whatever I was saying was unimportant. Maybe I'm just sensitive.
If I am talking to someone or otherwise engaged ( ie working) I just reach down and mute that call. Isn't that why we have the missed call feature ? I'll check it when I'm not talking with you or during a break. Funny thing is when I do this the other people seem to stress out. Their usual response is,you can take that call or aren't you going to take that call ? I've had a few that almost panic ! Maybe they are being polite and I appreciate that but I do not feel the need to answer the phone immediately in all situations.
What is worse is the phone stuck in your ear ! What is up with that ? Beam me up Scotty. I can see in a few particular circumstances where this may be necessary but for the most part, really? I could rant and rave on about this but lets leave it at,Really ?
I do think we need to add a course of study to the school curriculum, cell phone courtesy. Where have our manners gone ? I can recall the days when you would get a call saying I tried to call you earlier today or (gasp) yesterday and you didn't feel like you had committed a crime by not answering that call. I just prefer not feeling pressured to "take the call."

A change of identity

It is a natural thing that our identity should change throughout our lives based on occupation or marriage or family ties. I started out being Bens little boy. You know, that's Bens little boy. Went from that to being Ben's boy sans the little. Growing up in a small town most people knew you or someone in your family. Maybe not your parents but an Aunt or Uncle. Why, that is the Reichart boy, his mother was a Bennett. Her identity had changed too.
Leaving home and joining the Navy, and I expect it is the same in all branches,I became just Reichart. If your name was being read off a list it was always Reichart,Austin B. Last name first, name and initial. Your peers called you by your last name. A few very close friends may call you by your first name but that was the exception. For twenty years I was mostly a rank and a name. Petty Officer Reichart. We moved around a lot of course and the neighbors we did have called you by your name but always added,he is in the Navy. So that was your identity. Navy man.
After retiring I settled in Maryland. I am known here as Ben but also as being from away. I'm not a native to this land. Been here for over twenty years now but will never be from here. I can talk of places and events but not to local traditions. I have no ancestral claim to any of the good fishing holes or ties to the land. I'm a foreigner.
Yesterday while I was at work in the grocery store a Mom and three little girls were shopping. The little girls walked by me laughing and smiling. A minute later they came by again and were staring at me a little so I said Hello and asked if they needed to buy candy. Laughing they said,no,we went trick or treating last night ! I joked with them and off they went. Just as they were entering the checkout line the Mom says to me," You're Mark and Morgans grandfather, aren't you ?" I said yes that I was. The little girls said they thought it was me and had seen me at the school on Grandparents day.
I have been a grandfather for 9 years and am happy to say it is becoming my new identity ! Its' an identity I think I like the best other than being a good husband and the later is up for debate !

Election Day

Its' election day ! A day filled with excitement and anticipation. A day to exercise your right as an American citizen to voice your opinion. Voting is a privilege that many people in the world do not have. We tend to take it for granted as we have have been doing it for over 200 years. I will certainly exercise my right to vote.
On the other hand I will be glad when it is over. No more annoying phone calls and a thousand ads per day. Sure we will have to listen to the analysis and much discussion but its over. I've watched some of the debates, listened to some speeches and certainly the ads. What it got me to thinking about is,when did it go from a candidate telling you to vote for him because he /she can do a terrific job to the candidate telling you not to vote for the other person. Not only that, the candidates accuse each other of all kinds of misdeeds. Personally I don't like this negative campaigning strategy. Just tell me why I should vote for you.
Another thing came to mind as well. Where are the great speech makers ? I haven't heard any in a good while. I enjoy a good speech but now it seems all I hear are attack plans. My Mom always told me,"if you can't say anything nice about a person, don't say anything at all." If these politicians took her advice if would be a quiet campaign that is for sure.
Well, get out there and vote. It is still the best system in the world and you should feel privileged to be able to participate.

A little push

I had it all reasoned out. I wasn't going to go trick or treating with the grandkids this year. They are getting older now and really don't care if Grandpa is there. I have gone with them every year so it was time for a break. They probably would enjoy just being with mom and dad. It is no big deal. I'll just stay at home.
Then it happened. My son calls and says," What do you mean you are not going this year ?" I gave him all my logical responses and he says," let me talk to Mom " Bottom line here is I'm going trick or treating with the kids !
The grandkids arrived at my home full of energy and excitement. My Grandaughter was disguised as a hippie chick and my Grandson a werewolf. At the stroke of six we were off. The kids running ahead just as I anticipated. For the first half hour those kids barely realized I existed. I knew it would be like this. As it grew a little darker however the kids stayed a little closer. Soon they were walking along with me and telling me about the candy they got at the last house. I was trying to get my Grandaughter, the hippie chick,to say things like; groovy man, thats' hip, cool and right on and teasing with her. With the werewolf  I just howled !
When the night came to an end and it was time to go home the kids said goodnight. I sat down,a little tired from the walk,to watch the ball game.

I can't wait until next year. Maybe I'll get a costume too ! To think I almost missed it. Thanks son for talking to Mom sometimes all we need is a little push !
