A news item both sad and inspirational caught my attention. I'm sure you have heard about this by now. A 13 year old boy was told by school officials to remove the American flag from his bicycle ! He was told it may be offensive to others. I was dumbstruck. How could this be? Where is this,California ?
This young man had been flying his flag on his bicycle for two months prior to being told to remove it. According to school officials other students had complained about it. These officials said they were concerned about racial tensions or uprisings. Incredible ! They further stated they were only thinking of the safety of the students.
The sad part of this incident is twofold. First that anyone would tell a 13 year old child that flying an American flag,in America,is not allowed. I have given it much thought and can not think of any situation were it would be inappropriate. Secondly,that school officials would allow,if only for a moment,that school policy be dictated by  students. It is akin to allowing the country to be run by terrorists !
The inspirational part of the story is where over 100 people escorted this boy to school. They said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Star Spangled Banner when they arrived at the school. The young man said he flew the flag to honor veterans like his Grandfather. Another inspiration to me is the fact the family of this young man has stated they will not sue or seek any repercussions against the school officials.
How any school officials could become so misguided as to try to ban the flag on campus is way beyond my comprehension.It is my hope they feel sufficiently humiliated that this lesson stays with them.
The policy has been rescinded ! I am both amazed and infuriated that this incident even occurred. What action is being taken about the students complaining ? None that I have read about. There was a brief mention of an incident earlier in the year concerning cinco de mayo. That would lead me to believe it involves some of our Mexican immigrants. The state of California just ruled that illegal immigrants, note ILLEGAL,that have attended at least three years of high school in the state are eligible to attend state colleges. They also must receive the resident tuition rate. I'd bet they are not complaining about that !
