Every now and again I 'll watch the news and there will be several stories that just amuse or amaze me. Yesterday morning was one of those days.
It started out with a story about Baltimore County wanting to pass a bill about transgender people. About a year ago a guy, dressed as a girl, was discovered in the ladies room at a McDonalds. The two young ladies that discovered him/her ,whatever, dragged him outside(well he was already in drag ) the restroom and proceeded to beat the crap out of him. I don't hold with the beating part but this person had no business( well he wanted to take care of business) in there. Their actions, certainly not acceptable, are to me at least, understandable. Now the county wants to pass a bill. They say to end discrimination against the transgenders . This would allow anyone to dress as a member of the opposite sex and enter places intended for that sex. Think bathrooms and dressing rooms. The transgender people feel that by having to use the facility appropriate for their true gender it exposes them,no pun intended. They insist there is nothing wrong with them but want to hide it from others. I don't know about you, but I was taught if you have to do something in secret, you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place. A rose by any other name is still rose.
Following that story was another about a medical doctor doing a study. He is an emergency room physician. Last year he treated several people that were wearing ear buds/ear phones on the street and received injuries. Tragically, one young girl was killed. She and a friend were walking on a train track listening to some music. One girl heard the train approaching at the last second and jumped clear, sadly the other did not. So now this doctor has decided to do a study to see if listening to music is leading to accidents. He theorizes that if you can't hear what is going on around you,you may have an accident ! What a theory. I rather doubt the need for any formal study. I have only one thing to say to this M.D. " DUH" " Ya Think ? "
Then there was the story about the Mayor of Baltimore. It seems the city of Baltimore has a sky box at M&T bank stadium. That is where the Baltimore Ravens play ball. The Council president ,Mr. Young was in possession of these tickets. Lately he has been critical of one of the Mayors projects. She took offense and demanded the tickets be returned to her office. The official version says the administration demanded the return. She went to the game. Coincidentally, it was a playoff game. Sounds more like a bunch of children than elected officials running a major United States city. Another reason we are in the mess we are in.
And finally they did a segment on people doing extreme sports. One person wears a " flying suit " and jumps off cliffs and mountains. The other day he jumped off a mountain and broke both legs. Another was a skier that was practicing an extreme stunt and guess what ? She got hurt ! The whole point of the story was to point out that these extreme sports are dangerous ! Why, people are getting hurt doing them. Go figure.
Other than the story about the cruise ship being run aground, and the cowardice of the Captain of that ship, it must have been a slow day in the newsroom. It was good for a break from the normal gloom and doom. I am always amazed and amused by some of the reporting. It has to be frustrating for the reporters.
