Common Sense Controversy

There has been a great deal of talk lately about Pit bulls. Here in Maryland a court has labeled them as a dangerous breed. This has lead to some consternation from homeowners and landlords. Landlords are requiring you to get rid of them and homeowners are finding their insurance skyrocketing. As with everything, there is two sides to every story. Whereas these dogs were  bred to be aggressive, and are uniquely suited to fighting that doesn't mean every one is. All too often the owner encourages this behavior for various reasons. In my opinion it is in the nature of the animal and controlling that nature is questionable. Keep in mind that it is an animal.
All this, I believe, is the result of those people that have no common sense or feel that they have rights others don't. These are the same people that insist upon bringing their pets with them everywhere they go. You have no business bringing dogs to a parade or carnival where there are crowds of people. Can you be sure of the dogs reaction to this and what about the reaction of other people?  There are those that have a genuine fear of dogs. Is it fair to subject them to that ? I have written about this before and my opinion is unchanged. Remember that they are animals. They are not people, no matter how much you love them and call them your children. No one can predict their actions 100% of the time, any more than you can predict what another person will do. Add a breed known for aggressive behavior and you increase those odds.
Just the other day there was news story about a child being attacked by a pit bull. The owner of this dog had to beat the dog with a baseball bat to get it to let go. The child will recover but I'm sure will carry emotional scars for the rest of her life. The owner was interviewed and all but said it was the child's fault ! She said, " the kid tensed up and was afraid, dogs can sense that." And the point is ? Keep your animal on a leash or in a kennel. The dog attacked for what reason ? I don't know, she don't know, no one knows. What we do know is that this dog is dangerous ! The owner wants her dog returned. If another person had done this would you want that person living in your house ? I wouldn't. I don't care if you are my mother, brother, sister or any other relative if you viciously attack another you need to be restrained and possibly committed.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, " you can't legislate common sense. "  This labeling of the pit bull as a dangerous breed is an attempt to do that. Apparently there are many owners of this dog that can't seem to recognize that. Either that or they just don't care. No it is not fair to those dog owners that care for and love their animals. No it is not fair to those pit bulls that are gentle well behaved animals. But at this time I can see no alternative. Government is trying to legislate common sense again. Isn't that why the government says we all have to wear seat belts ? Isn't that why they are making laws against driving while texting and talking on the phone ? Isn't that the same reason it is illegal to drink alcohol and drive ? It says something about society when we have to implement such laws and it ain't good.

  1. Our dog appears to be pit mix, she was called a boxer mix by the pound. I can not say enough nice things about her, she is harmless. It's sad to see how some people react when I am out with her. I have full grown men show fear. If I had to live in a dump just be keep my dog I would, she is a part of family and this is comeing from someone who is not a dog lover. Breeds are not bad, just the people who mistreat them.
