Walked over to the post office yesterday afternoon and noticed all the Towns Christmas trimmings are gone. Looked around and saw only a single wreath still clinging to someones door. It was a little brown and getting sparse but still there. Went inside and opened my box and removed the contents. A few pieces of junk mail and a bill. That's when it hit me, the holidays are over ! No card from friend or family. No circular urging me to act quickly on this Christmas sale or that. Met a couple of people coming and going and the only exchange was excuse me. No more Merry Christmas or Happy New Year. Back to the real everyday world.
The radio was playing some sad old song and it was just cold outside. There was a light dusting of snow on the ground but of course no speculation of snow for Christmas. About the only time I ever look forward to snow.
Funny how it seems like it was a long time ago now. Preparations were made in anticipation weeks and months in advance but the day just comes and goes in a flash. Some trappings hang on a few days and some for a week or two then one day, bang, it's over. Christmas and New year done. Let's get on with it. Nothing much on the immediate horizon to look forward to on my part. Yeah there is Martin Luther King Day and Valentines day but they aren't much for holidays in my opinion. Memorial day is the next one of importance to me. Signaling the beginning of summer along with remembering those fallen, always a good thing !
So now we head into the doldrums of winter. Cold and monotonous A little more light each day gives us hope for the spring. When you see the first buds on the trees and the grass starting to green up you know you are almost there.
Yes,the holidays are behind us. I'm looking forward to spring !
