Those that came were financed. The common story is that we came seeking religious freedom. Our cause was noble and motivations pure. We,the self righteous being oppressed, sought our freedom. Well, sorta. That is one side of the story. The other side tells quite a different tale.
I hear tell of great wealth and riches that await in a foreign land. The problem lies in attaining those resources. The plan is this. I know a bunch of malcontents always speaking of freedom. I will provide the means for their freedom. I will finance their journey to this new land. I hear the land is inhabited by savages that have no regard for human life and indeed they worship no God at all. This land, void of any suitable habitation and having no settlements of any description beyond "camp sites " is not fit for a Gentleman. I will exploit these " Pilgrims " for my own gain. They will get their " freedom " all the while being dependent upon me.
And that is the way the Americas got settled. Make no mistake about it. Those that came were not the wealthy land owners in the old country. It was a financed venture for monetary gain. The " Pilgrims " were sold a packet ! That is not to say they were totally unaware of this arrangement, I'm sure the contrary is true but the packet was preferable to their current state. A small chance is better than no chance at all.
The Europeans eventually purchased the land from the natives. More properly the " Chiefs " sold the land to the white man for profit. I'm quite certain a good portion of the " Indians " were not happy about it. The Chief selling off the land for his own gain with no thought to the poor Indian. And look at what the white man is doing with the land. Chopping down the tress, digging up the land and penning up the animals ! Stupid white man. The " Chiefs " later lament the loss of their ancestral lands forgetting about the " sale. " The white man spoke with forked tongue and his papers was worthless. Truth was, the Chief was bamboozled and the lawyers took care of the paperwork. The Chief never stood a chance against the wealth of the white man. Wealth and overwhelming numbers spelled the end. The wealthy financed the operation and the poor joined in. Their reward ?A promise of wealth for themselves. And so it continues to this day. The " Natives " selling their land to the wealthy and then complaining about it ! What has happened to my ancestors land ? The land of my forefathers. I sold it ! That answer is often unsatisfactory to those that didn't share in the gain. Isn't that the truth of it ?
This selling of the land we came to call " progress. " We had to call it something that sounded good. Those that benefited from the sale had to sugar coat it in some fashion. We will label it progress and tell those displaced how their lives will be enriched by the experience. All you need do is find the malcontents and finance their ambitions. Exchange temporary funds for the land. The land is permanent. Strange thing about land, it is limited in supply, yet never sold out ! The " natives " are always restless and willing to sell.
