It's Here

It's here. Fall or is it Autumn ? Which term do you use ? I call it fall. Makes sense to me, the leaves fall. Autumn I think was invented by a rich person that wanted to sound fancy. No matter what you call it ,it is a beautiful time of the year. Elizabeth Bowen (an Irish novelist ) wrote, " Autumn arrives in the early morning, but Spring at the close of a winter day. " I think she said that well. If you look closely in the early morning, with the rising sunlight, you can begin to see the change in color. At first the change is faint and hard to discern. Soon however it will burst forth. When I was younger this was always met with the smell of burning leaves. Today that experience is becoming less and less. Regulation and science restricting it. The regulations to prevent people from burning the town down, and science telling us breathing those fumes causes disease.
Well, I still risk it every now and again.
Fall is the time to prepare. The winter will soon overtake fall and the ground become barren and cold. In the old days this was a real concern. I think it is still programmed into our DNA, this anticipation of winter. Pumpkins, straw bales, corn stalks and gourds. The stockpiling of supplies. Best get the wood cut for winter. Draw the necessities of life close to you. That is the purpose of Fall. A time to prepare. The time to reflect upon the blessings of the year can wait, that is the purpose of winter. We celebrate at the end of Fall with a feast of Thanksgiving. The prelude to a season of Thanks and gratitude. Isn't that what Christmas is for ? To praise and give thanks for our lord and savior. We celebrate his birth and in turn our own birth.
Yes Fall is the signal to prepare. The brightly colored foliage is the signal flag. Attention, change is on the way. Get ready. Time to finish up those summer chores, gather the harvest and move indoors. Families grow closer in the fall and winter and that is by design. Warm apple pie and cider. Hearty stews and soup. Home baked bread and rolls. All the comforts. The crackling of the fire and quiet conversation. If I had to name the season I think I would call it, Norman Rockwell.
