Online

The State of Maryland is considering selling lottery tickets online. Discussions are being held in the legislature. I find it amusing that in these tough economic times where everyone is looking for an answer this would be considered. One estimate says the State could get as much as 70 million yearly from these sales.
Just check out the demographics on who is buying the majority of tickets. Isn't the rich folks. The middle class buy a portion, but the majority of money " invested " in this form of gambling is from the lower class. The poor.
You don't need to spend several thousand dollars and do a study on it. Go to any convenience / liquor store and watch the ticket sales. It will become quite apparent.
So now the plan will be to sell them online in a more private setting. Tap into the other markets. We won't tax the rich/middle class openly but will use deceit. The State wants there money too. Besides the State is running out of money to give to the poor to buy tickets with. They need to refill those coffers. By offering online sales no one has to be embarrassed being seen buying tickets. Maybe we could get some money from the elderly that aren't able to get around as well. I can see the potential here.
I have to hand to those representatives for creative thinking. The State is having a fiscal crisis so we will finance the recovery through gambling. What a plan. Given the number of scratch off tickets, power ball and mega million tickets already being sold I wouldn't count on it. It says on our tickets the benefits go to the Maryland Stadium Authority. I haven't heard anything about that being a real solvent thing. Our roads and other infrastructure in the State are crumbling. Unemployment is at all time highs. Just recently, within the last few months, highway tolls have increased dramatically.
I know. Let's allow the online sale of lottery tickets ! That will solve this problem for sure. Those middle class folks need to invest more in a gamble ! Rich folks too ! Pay their fair share. If we just make it more convenient I'm sure they will step up to the plate. Or their keyboards.
