Time for Change

No this is not a political blog. I'm referring to the time change.Hope you all remembered. I was constantly reminded by television,radio and more importantly Facebook ! Thanks friends. So I thought I'd look up a little information about this custom. I found,as I usually do, a lot of stuff I didn't know that was interesting.
In the United States most of us change at 2am on the 2nd Sunday in March. Each time zone in the United States switches at a different time though. Almost everyone refers to this as Daylight Savings Time but that is incorrect.It is Daylight Saving Time. No (S) No actual daylight is saved however,only shifted from morning until night. So more properly it should be called Daylight Shifting Time but that would just sound wrong !
Did you know that DST is not observed in,Hawaii,American Samoa,Virgin Islands,Commonwealth of Northern Marianas and most surprising to me, Arizona. The Navajo nation which covers a large portion of Arizona does however.
This time shifting can cause funny things to happen and sometimes not so funny. In Sept of 1999 a group of Israeli terrorist on the West Bank assembled a bomb. They smuggled to another group that didn't understand the time and it blew up while they were planting it. Three terrorists gone.
For many years the candy manufacturers lobbied to have the date of DST extended for Halloween so the kids could trick or treat longer in daylight. In 2007 a new law did extend DST to the first Sunday in November. It was found that the kids waited until dark to go trick or treating.
Did you know that all Amtrak trains running in November stop at 2am and wait one hour before proceeding ? In the spring they just keep going but are one hour late !
Did you know that DST can change the birth order of twins ? In the fall one could be born at 1:55am the other twin could be born at 1:05am ten minutes later. In the spring there are no babies born between 2 and 3am.
These are just a few of the things I found interesting. Funny how you can live your whole life just doing something and not know why. Arizona doesn't change ? Didn't know that. You just assume. It gets real confusing in the European Union. That is another topic altogether.
