enabled

I'm left a bit confused by a recent news article. It seems New York is opening supervised injection centers. Yes, paid professionals will monitor and assist drug addicts in the injection process. They will be there, ready and waiting to rescue anyone who overdoses. The storyline is it will save lives. It was pointed out that these drug users are going to do it anyway so we should help them to be safe about it. I can only think it is the same logic as defunding the Police because, well, people are going to commit crime anyway. The whole narrative was one of compassion and mercy!
Now what I'm confused about is what I was taught in various training courses. When attending these classes on drug and alcohol abuse for supervisors, that action would have been called, enabling. If you buy the drugs or alcohol, provide them a place to use it and then just provide those folks with excuses for using those substances, you are an enabler! The blame gets shifted to you because addicts just can't help themselves. Of course, these training lectures were always given by those whose occupation was "rehabilitating" the users, so it was no surprise to me that they insisted you would require their services. No different than talking to a lawyer, doctor or carpenter. Yeah, you need a professional. I fail to see how this new program is any different from that. Should I give a suicidal person a handgun because they are going to do it anyway? This program just aims to provide the addicts with clean needles and professional advice on injection methods. Yeah, they are there to "save" you if you need that. I have noticed however that the Casinos don't have a policy of returning your money if you have a gambling addiction, the banks do not forgive your loans, and McDonalds isn't paying for weight loss surgeries.
What's further confusing is that the whole thing is illegal! I fail to see how this is being allowed at all. It appears to be more of this leftist agenda of just ignoring those laws or statutes that you disagree with. He is a statute regarding these facilities. 21 USC 856 (Maintaining a Drug-Involved Premises-Crack House Statute) Twenty year maximum for opening, leasing, renting, or maintain a premise for drug manufacturing, use or distribution. Also applies to those who manage or control such premises (including owners and landlords of rental properties.) Note it specifically says a place to USE drugs. Running a supervised crack house is just as illegal as having an unsupervised crack house!
So what's next? Supervised houses of prostitution? The workers receiving permits, free health plans and a retirement system? After all, they are going to do that anyway. Maybe the state can tax that is some fashion. And as a benefit put the Epsteins of the world out of business and no more Pimps either. Yes, it would a service to humanity in general. Could have counselors available as well. We will fully support what we know to be wrong, in that way we can steer people to the right! We have to do that, to save them! They are going to be wrong anyway might as well help them along until they see the light. Drug addicts are alright, as long as we don't have to see them on the streets or lying dead in the alley. It's not their fault after all. We, as a society have failed these poor unfortunates. Here is a clean needle and we are standing by to save you, you will live on to abuse drugs again. Hey, it's the least we can do. We are not enablers, we are saviors!
