Next up on the calendar, Memorial Day. A big day for business, problem being it is a holiday that brings folks together. Can you really have a parade? Well, you could do that but watching that parade at a social distance would certainly be different. The reality is , it is the economic impact that causes concern. Can we open summer? The President is certainly pushing for that while the more liberal crowd is resisting. It is a delicate balance between safety and security. In this case can you really be secure while being safe? I don't see how. We could all stay at home, isolated from each other and be safe from the spread of that virus. How secure are you going to be with no money? How secure are you going to feel relying upon the government and the charity of others to feed your family, provide housing, and retain all those things we take for granted these days. No work, no money. It's a very simple reality.
Man has always placed himself in danger in the pursuit of an occupation. Yes we have certainly tried to make things safer. Historically it has been accidents and tragedies that was the impetus for change. This is certainly a tragic event we are experiencing right now, this invisible enemy. Not the first invisible enemy mankind has faced and not the last. We have responded as best we can. Todays weapons are far more advanced than those in the past and I'm expecting results rather quickly. I'd suggest it is an overabundance of caution that is inhibiting some of that progress right now. But we must remember, this is America. A country where mistakes are often severely punished. We call it " getting justice " but what is it that we seek? Monetary compensation. That is what we get in exchange for injury, of all types. Well, after all, what more is there , right? You can't undo mistakes, you can't rewrite the past, and you can't reverse consequences.
I am expecting the tourist areas to be opened by memorial day. The economic impact of them not being able to do so would be devastating to many. Contrary to what some people tend to believe, the government doesn't have unlimited funds. The government gets its' funds from the people! Another simple reality that so many seemed confused about. Memorial day went from being a day to honor our war dead to the opening of the summer season. It's a holiday. Consider that carefully, what is a holiday? The dictionary says it is a day of festivity or recreation, a day when no work is done. In Europe a holiday is a vacation. Memorial day was, at first, called decoration day. A day to decorate the graves of the fallen. Over time that practice was reduced to placing a flag on those graves, then letting the party and parades begin! We changed the name to Memorial Day and declared it a holiday. How many years will it be before 9/11 becomes a holiday? More than once it has been suggested. What would we celebrate? Holidays are for celebration , aren't they? Yes, but commerce centers around holidays as well. The greeting card industry alone generates about 7.5 billion annually. A card for every holiday and occasion. Memorial day marks the beginning of all that summer money.
To listen to the news this will be the end of all we ever knew and loved. We will forever walk six feet apart, not shake hands in greeting each other and carry hand sanitizer as a matter of course. But, not if we stay indoors today. No, if we follow the guidelines that the government provide long enough for an immunization to be developed. we can all be saved. Make no mistake about it, this virus will be used as a tool to push for mandatory immunizations. I'll leave it you to determine if that is a good thing or not. I'll just ask how much trust do you place in the government? Well, not government exactly, those that are pulling the strings, those that stand to profit? I'll be keeping an eye on that. You know 67 years ago, on March 26 Jonas Salk developed this vaccine. Know which one it was? If you are close to my age you probably know it was the Polio vaccine. But did you know he never patented that vaccine. No, because he wanted it available to everyone at the lowest cost possible. Bill Gates has already financed the construction of seven factories. Do you know what these factories are to produce? Vaccines. Foresight or part of a business plan? Time will tell us that answer.
