A Republic

I am one of those people that answer liberal cries of, " not my president " with the response, " yes he is. " There is a division in the country that can't be denied. I want the republic to remain intact.  I do feel compelled to point something out today. It was on July the second in 1776 when the Continental Congress declared, " not my King. " Yes, that is basically what they said. It being 1776 and all they did state that far more eloquently than what is being said today. It is true that sedition was frowned upon and not entered into casually. These were , after all, gentlemen. Educated and thoughtful men that had drawn up documents explaining their position and their reasons for acting. There had been many appeals to the King for just and fair treatment that had gone unanswered. First the British imposed new taxes to pay for the French and Indian war, then proclaimed we couldn't move west of the Appalachian mountains. That was followed by the stamp act. The King repealed that but parliament instituted the Declaratory act giving them the right to tax the colonists! Basically they claimed to repeal a tax but started a fee, politicians at their best. The British closed Boston harbor following the Boston tea party and refused to open it until the tea was paid for. The first continental congress was established, they tried for peace but it wound up in war. That's pretty much when they said, " not my King. " And let's not forget about the Boston massacre. A " patriot " mob was throwing snowballs, sticks and stones at a British patrol. Five were killed and six injured. That happened after two years of harassment by British troops enforcing the Townshend act.
Let's compare that to these cries of " not my president. " First off you do get to vote for who you want for president. That don't happen with Kings, you don't get a say. Sure the guy you voted for may not win but you've got a chance. Now you may not support the decision that was made but that individual is still the president of the United States. Yes, yes, I understand you don't like him, you don't want him to be president but guess what, he is the president! Let's also remember that Kings are forever. There is no term limit for a King, that depends upon how long he manages to live. Our president is currently limited to two terms, should he be reelected. For you Obama supporters that is a bummer I know, but it's the law. That amendment to the Constitution was passed by a Republican controlled congress in response, some say, to FDR's presidency. Best known for the " new deal " to stimulate the economy during the depression. As far back as 1936 this new deal was regarded as a " liberal " policy and the " conservatives " opposed it. It when we first heard about the term, relief. Then it was called welfare, sounds better that way and now federal entitlements! And yes, FDR started social security too. Subsequent democratically controlled congresses have passed legislation to allow transferring those funds to other accounts and the result is what you see today. Social Security is in jeopardy but not welfare! But I'm getting off topic a bit. The real reason for term limits on a president are so you don't wind up with a King. It's easy to get reelected when you are giving everything away for free. Ben Franklin wrote, " when the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic. "  “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the people discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy--to be followed by a dictatorship.”
Alexander Fraser Tytler
And that my friends is why we have a Republic! Franklin knew that and I'm certain the other founding Fathers knew that as well. It is also why most liberals will insist we have a democracy. It is why they insist the electoral college must go. If they can once establish a " democracy " they know they will remain in power at least until the economy collapses. But, knowing that they can be prepared for that eventuality. Liberals care little for a Republic because a republic prevents that from happening.
That is my history lesson for today. I say, God Bless America and I pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. It's why I'm a Republican!
