Turning on the evening news I hear the White House spokesman, Jay Carney saying the killing of Americans is both legal and ethical. Excuse me Sir ? Listening a little closer now I hear he is defending the white house position that the President has the authority to launch a drone aircraft attack against American citizens. No evidence or imminent threat to security or national safety necessary. No hearing,trial or testimony from the suspect. Just kill them. Legal ? It what country are you living ? I'm certainly no lawyer but I do know about due process. Amendment 14 of the constitution specifically states, " no state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States ; nor shall any state deprive any person of life,liberty,or property,without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. ' Seems clear to me. The intent is obvious. To prevent just such a thing as this from happening. Of course the lawyers and spin doctors are trying to use a series of semantics to justify their position. The amendment speaks of " states " all the states. Do not collectively all the states comprise the United States ? The federal government derives its power from the States.
Legalities aside let us consider the ethical issues. Our President apparently has no qualms about killing Americans. Given his stand on birth control, I believe that to be a logical conclusion. Aborting a life, even a potential life, is akin to killing that life. One can list possible scenarios to attempt to justify their use ( the morning after pill) but their purpose is clear. To end a life. My ethics do not allow for such actions. Our President also flip flops on the death penalty for criminals. For the most part he opposes that. So what are you saying Mr. President ? We shouldn't kill convicted criminals, those that have been afforded due process and all the legal considerations guaranteed in the Constitution, but we should should kill those that may have,might have,could be,might be, opposed to your views ? Those that you consider, without judicial review, warrant death !
These are dangerous times. Our freedoms are being attacked from all angles. Slowly and surely they are being chipped away. This memo about the drone attacks and its legality was leaked out. I for one am glad of that. Hopefully this wakes some people up. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but things are not looking good for the average citizen. The rich and powerful are circumventing our Constitution and protections to fit their own agendas. Making the population dependent upon the government, attempting to abridge our right to bear arms, and now stating they ( the government ) have the right to take our lives ? Dangerous times my friends.
