There is an ancient concept that is gaining traction in todays world. It is called moral relativism. What is that? It is the philosophy that there is no absolute right and wrong. Right and wrong are dependent upon the society alone with no one having the final say. Ancient Greek philosophers talked about that and the idea was rejected as untenable. At least it is untenable on a wide scale. For a large nation to adopt such a philosophy will ultimately lead to its' demise. The last ditch effort being a dictatorial state. Ironically the dictator is the final authority in that situation. Then moral relativism resides solely with the dictators morals. That's always an issue.
This idea of moral relativism is being used in the modern world on a limited basis. There are certain biases that go unchecked and unnoticed. If a poor, unknow person is shot and killed, it's a murder. If an important person, one with power and position is killed, that's an assassination! Moral relativism. If a group of people attack others and kill them its' mass murder. Arm thousands of men, call them an Army, and they receive medals and honor for killing thousands of others. Moral relativism. But no one in society condemns any of that. It's acceptable in the society. When two individuals commit the same crime but the judge decides on different punishment, that's moral relativism. In fact, most will agree that's only fair! Moral relativism. It all depends. There is no absolute right or wrong. Right and wrong are subjective in that situation.
Well what's the problem with that? If you are going to say there is no absolute right or wrong you have to also say there can be no God. You can't have a God that arbitrarily decides what is right or wrong. No, a God, any God has to be the absolute authority. Having decided that there is no God what is left? Mans' law. That is all you have. Can man legislate morality? No, he can not unless man adopts what? Moral relativism. Then right is whatever the society decides to allow and wrong is whatever the society decides is wrong. And how does the society determine such? Only through tradition and culture. Now when a nation has many different cultures and traditions this becomes an issue. The United States is a great case in point. Isn't that what is happening in our country right now? Oh you can give it any number of names, but what it is, is a clash of cultures. Each culture attempting to impose there traditions, customs and culture upon the other citizens. Indeed we are facing a crisis on just that issue. So far the response has been what? Moral relativism. Yes they broke the law, but they are justified in doing so. Moral relativism. Yes, they are doing things contrary to the American tradition, they are trampling on our customs and traditions, finding some of them offensive, but we shouldn't say anything, it's their right. Moral relativism.
Yes the big argument here is that we should all act in a moral fashion. We must be inclusive, accepting of others ideas, beliefs, traditions and customs. It's the only way! But, and here's the catch, we mustn't have a moral authority! No, no, no. We must all act morally and that means there is no right or wrong, there is only what society accepts. It all depends! And that is what is wrong with moral relativism.
