My grandson was here yesterday, I do see him almost daily, and the topic of " aliens " came up. Maybe it had something to do with that returning astronaut. In any event it was asked if we are alone in the universe. Grandma and I are both of the opinion that we are not. It doesn't seem likely that God would create a vast universe and choose only this planet for life. I in no way feel threatened by that and it doesn't change my faith. My grandson didn't really give his opinion although I got the impression he is quite skeptical of the whole idea. He did ask, if that was so how come we haven't made contact. I have a theory about that as well, I have theories for just about everything. In this case I would say this ; could it be that God will not allow that to happen until we learn how to get along with each other on our own planet ! God does know what is best and he has the plan. So far we haven't done so well in the relations department.
I do believe that God, by whatever name you choose, is the sole creator of the universe. It is a concept beyond the ability of man to completely understand. Fate or luck ? That is something we decide for ourselves and is loosely based in faith. If you get sick just before you are supposed to go on a trip and can't go, is that bad luck ? The plane crashes, the one you would have been on, is it then good luck ? Perhaps it was fate. Was that a part of the plan ? Does God cause everything to happen ? No, I don't believe he does. And I only use " he " as a matter of convenience. Remember that same God also gave us free will.
Setting all that aside, I return to the question of are we alone ? I would have to say no. We may be restrained to our own planet, galaxy or universe. Sure we travel in space but just how far is that really when you are speaking of the universe ? The moon is in our backyard ! Mars is next door. The accomplishments we have achieved so far have been baby steps. They have also mostly been accomplished by individual nations. The United States and Russia are the only two to make significant progress in that area. We are now working jointly with other nations, a step closer perhaps. Still since we haven't learned to cohabitate on this tiny globe is it reasonable to expect to be included in a celestial community ? It could be we are being watched by others, hence the UFO sightings. Perhaps they just see us as too dangerous an animal to contact. If they have the ability to travel through space of what value would our planet be, of what value would we be to them ? Perhaps we are no more than a curiosity.
Of course all of this is just speculation and conjecture. The whole concept of the universe is more than man can understand. There is no beginning and no end. How can that be ? We only know the beginning and end of a circle by arbitrarily assigning a point of reference. The completed circles' " beginning " or " end " can not be determined except by the one that initially drew that circle. So too, I believe it to be so with the universe. God drew that circle. Where we are on that circle is the unknown. We can only determine that after the journey is completed.
