I was having a discussion when it was mentioned that a paragraph I had quoted could be found on ethic websites, mostly for lawyers. The implication being logic was a secular thing. The paragraph in question was then declared to be a logical fallacy. My position, of course, was just the opposite. I do apply logic and reasoning often in my life, even when it comes to religious belief. And so I have been considering that proposition, and it has led me to question, is belief logical? Indeed does belief have to be logical? The answer is, of course, emphatically no. If that were so we wouldn't believe in miracles, the salvation of our souls from eternal damnation, or the resurrection. There are no logical explanations for those things, the explanations depends solely on faith.
The existence of God, a superior being, creator, or whatever name you wish to apply is a logical assumption. The earth is here, therefore someone or something had to create it. Given the established order of the universe as we know it, that is only logical. A random event? No, I can't see that. Beyond that however, what evidence do we have to support that conclusion? What logic can we apply? Can the secular ( logic ) provide proof for the religious beliefs of man? Science has certainly been applied without definitive answers. But what of logic? Logic can be used to reinforce what we already believe. In doing so we must then declare some logic to be a fallacy when it doesn't align with our belief. But how are we to judge? We can only judge based on belief. Logic can never prove or disprove belief. Does that then support the idea that all logic is secular? No, but ethics certainly can be. Isn't that the foundation of the separation of church and state? Ethics, for the public in general, must be based in logic, in what has proven to be the most beneficial for the whole. Belief plays no role in establishing the ethics of a society. That is the idea, but far from the reality. The reason is a basic one, you can not expect man to separate belief from his logic. Each is dependent upon the other.
Is belief logical? To my thinking it is. Someone had to create all of this. I believe that, it's a logical assumption. Belief is based upon assumption. We assume certain things based on past experiences. Call it predictive thought. We all do it, all the time. Sometimes we label that strength of faith. How strongly do you believe? Can a logical argument sway you from your belief? If it can your belief is weak, if it can't your belief is strong. Some would call the later being headstrong! Of course others would say you are merely stubborn. Again I ask, is belief logical? It is, but is what I believe logical? That's the real question we should all be asking ourselves.
