a diversion

I saw something similar to this on Facebook. I see a lot of clever and artsy things on there, people can be so creative. Apparently, there wasn't enough room in my personality for that quality or playing a musical instrument. Can't sing or dance either but that doesn't stop me from trying. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I decided to imitate what I had seen. All I needed was a few rocks or stones. So, I took a drive around town to locate some. Found a big pile in the new construction site and figured they wouldn't miss them.
Earlier this year I had made a model of the fireplace that was in my childhood home. The base of that model is an actual brick from that fireplace. I used a tea candle for the fire and had chiseled the brick away to make a spot for that. This time however it was stone. Not being a geologist, I have no idea what kind of stone it really is. It's a gray stone and really hard. I tried chipping at it with a hammer like they made the pyramids but wasn't making a lot of progress. I reached for my rotary tool! I did have a diamond cut off wheel and found it cut into the stone quite well. It had been used and so wore out rather quickly. No problem, this is the 21st century in America, we have Amazon! I placed my order for a complete set of diamond rotary cutters. Arriving the next day, they worked faster than those slaves in Egypt. I was able to carve out a place for the tea candle to rest securely. Selecting a couple of smaller stones all I had to do was put those faces on them. I'm not very artistic but I managed that.
Had a Facebook friend named Tim Reilly. My mom used to work for his mom many years ago and that was our connection, along with growing up in the same town. He being a bit older than myself we were never in person friends; you know six years is a big difference when you are in school. But anyway, he told me he was a stone mason. I have seen a few photographs of his work, and it was impressive. Saw a few other projects he had made, and it was obvious he had more artistic talents than I. I thought of him as I ground away at that stone. I wonder how he would have accomplished that task.
I can take no credit for thinking any of that up. As I said, saw it on Facebook. I certainly don't think of myself as any sort of artist. I see a good number of folks making such claims these days after taking a few classes or going to a seminar. In a general sense we call it crafting when an amateur imitates what a professional may be doing. Some folks think of themselves as professional hobbyists. All art is subjective. The proof of that hangs on the walls of museums around the world. A good deal of that I wouldn't hang in my garage, but that's my taste. I don't think any of what I do as crafting, a hobby or anything else. It is just a distraction to me, something to occupy my time. That is what all of that started out to be in my opinion. It only became professional when others were willing to pay you for that. It is great when you can get paid for doing what you love. I haven't been that lucky.
I made those little stones by a fire with my granddaughter in mind. I thought she might get a laugh out of that. I like it so much I just might keep it for myself. There are a few other things around that I have made over the years for amusement or for a practical purpose. There is a little step stool that is at least twenty-five years old now. It's a sort of fixture in the house. And that was also in my mind as I made that stone project. I'm thinking that perhaps it will find its' way on a shelf or in a small corner somewhere in the kids or grandkids homes. A little knick-knack, a conversation starter. I like the thought of that. If I can't overwhelm you with quality, maybe quantity will work. No plans to make more of them, to go professional and attempt to sell them, nothing like that. It was an interesting diversion. Just something about working with your hands. I do use power tools though, let's not get carried away.

Denial and doubt

I see many advertisements for mental health services, just ask your doctor. In the last few years that's even a question on those forms you have to fill out before your doctors appointment. I always just check no; I don't feel like killing myself today. I'm not sure when that became a question to ask someone in a general sense like that. How are you feeling? I don't have any aches or pains, but I feel depressed, I'm just not as happy as I feel like I could be, probably a quality of life issue, but I'm thinking about killing myself. It's really a state I just call, living. Yeah, sometimes I'm not happy and sometimes I am.
I think it is a disturbing trend, this attitude of, "you need help." That seems to be the message I get from all this awareness. There is certainly some magic medication that can dull your senses enough that you just don't notice. Then you can use this diagnosis as a sort of excuse. Others are then expected to comply with your wishes and just play along. We have even taken to legalizing magic medication that will chill you out. It's cool man, no worse than alcohol. Don't drive high should be sufficient warning against any protentional dangers. That has worked extremely well with alcohol. Strange how the AMA says if you have more than two drinks a day you are an alcoholic. That's for men, cut that in half for women. But with pot it isn't about how much you smoke; it's about how often you smoke.
For me this attitude is one of doubt. It is instilling doubt in the minds of the people. By constantly telling everyone how much they need help, how their thinking isn't right, they are instilling doubt. Everyone else feels this way so it must be right. That's what is being taught today. It's all about perception and influencing that perception. I'm old enough to remember when patriotism was taught as a noble ideal. I remember when it was normal to say America is number one. Can't say that today. Today we are being taught to doubt our own mental faculties. Are you sure you don't need help? Hey, there's no shame in seeking help. In fact, seeking help is just a sign of maturity. You should seek help even when you don't think you need help, don't be thinking you are strong in that regard. You're weak and need help. You are depressed!
Most of this begins with denial. There's an awful lot of that going on right now. Denial of basic facts. An abortion terminates the life of a child. That's a fact. Regardless of any reasoning for performing that procedure, that is the result of that procedure. If you can justify that as a valid choice you can't then protest against terminating a life in any other situation as well. Criminals get the death sentence, and we fight wars. Both actions require the termination of life and that's a valid choice. There are two genders. Another simple fact. You may feel like your assignment is wrong, but it isn't, it is what it is. You may feel like a celebrity but you're not getting a star in front of Graumans Chinese theater. That's just a fact. Some people will like you, some people will not. Sometimes people just say mean things and hurt our feelings. Get over it.
You can't live your life in doubt and denial. It'll save you a lot of money in pills and therapists. Quit doubting yourself and being so concerned with what the crowd is saying. Understand one thing, the crowd wants you to go along with them because they have doubt. All their denial is an attempt to avoid reality. You can't learn to live your life in a book. Education has little to do with being a mature adult. Accepting reality, remaining confident in your abilities and being aware of your limitations will take you far. Joining the popular group, adopting what the group thinks or says isn't really being independent. To be truly independent you have to walk alone sometimes.
Living your best life. I hear that phrase all the time and what does that mean. Is your best life doing what you want, when you want, with whom you want? In short, having it your way, like the promise at burger king? I'm old enough to remember when Kids where King at that establishment. The message is different today. Today it is all about you, and the way you feel. And if you're not feeling validated by the world around you the world should change to suit you. But that isn't going to happen so we can just medicate the world away and you can live your best life. That's the perception but not the reality. Medicines do not extend the average lifespan of humans. That is just a scientific fact. In truth the average lifespan of an American has decreased over the last few years and is expected to continue to do so. Of course, enough medication and you won't even notice that. You can deny that, you can doubt it, but you will be just as dead. It's a fact.

virtue

It's after six and I'm just starting to compose todays blog, a late start for me. I've been up for a while but the impulse to write hadn't arrived yet. I usually just write about whatever is on my mind or what is in the news. The protests are on my mind again this morning as I struggle to understand all of that. I get the part about wanting the hostilities to end, for those Palestinians not engaged in the warfare to be safe. I don't get how anyone, other than Hamas themselves, can support Hamas and their agenda. They are the ones that attacked Israel, took hostages and caused all of this turmoil. I just don't get how you can possibly say we support Palestine because they are innocent people but ignore the fact that it was Hamas that took hostages, civilians, those completely innocent of anything, and have held them for more than six months! How could you possibly call for Israel to simply quit, allow Hamas to occupy the land. How can you claim you are protesting for peace? What they are protesting for is a surrender. Would you abandon your family members? Would you simply quit, acquiesce if that happened to you?
These protests began in response to the large number of casualties in the Gaza strip. All of those people were warned to evacuate. None have been taken hostage. There have been efforts to spare those that are innocent, but Hamas has prevented that. Hamas has been using those people as shields in the hope that Israel will simply quit. They have done so because they are cowards that slink around in the dark, launch sneak attacks and realize that they cannot prevail in a war against Israel. I haven't heard any of those protesting calling upon Hamas to release all the hostages immediately or to negotiate a truce where non-combatants could leave the Gaza strip. I've heard nothing from other nations in the geographic area offering to take in refugees from that strip of land.
The Palestinians have rejected the two state solution. Palestinians have continually done so and will continue to do so. But just who are the Palestinians? That is something that can't be defined in any meaningful way. Palestine is a "de jure" sovereign state. It exists in law, if not in reality. It is recognized in legal circles but not necessarily in what actually exists. Israel is a sovereign state. It's true that 28 nations in the United Nations do not recognize that, 25 of those countries are Muslim nations so it is no surprise to anyone. Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela are the other dissenters. As long as the Palestinians refuse the two state solution, wars, conflicts and terrorism will exist.
Can a lasting peace be achieved by Israel surrendering to Hamas? Is that the only answer? The reality is the Jewish people will always be attacked by the Muslim people. Since the 7th century the Muslim people established a doctrine saying that land conquered by Muslim people can never be surrendered, ever. Non-Muslims living in the area can at best pay a special tax to live there, sort of protection money. That is only granted to Christians and Jews, other are either expelled, converted or killed. Yes, when it comes to Islam, you have to pay protection money if you are a Christian or a Jew or suffer the consequences. There is far more to that whole situation than that, however.
So just what are those students protesting? I'd suggest they really don't understand the situation at all. A bunch of kids that believe the world can be all rainbows and unicorns. Quick to jump upon the "virtue" wagon while ignoring the realities of life. Peace is never granted, it is won. Peace is also a temporary thing. Conflict is inevitable. Want to be virtuous? Condemn those committing the real atrocities. Condemn that. Israel has ever right and indeed an obligation to defeat Hamas, to eradicate that terrorist organization. Hamas is no government; it is nothing more than a bunch of thugs! It isn't Palestine. Who attacked Israel? Google that and the majority of the time the answer will be Hamas attacked Israel. You won't find many saying Palestine attacked Isarel. Are they two separate entities? Well, that is another whole discussion.

an uncomfortable view

Was chatting with someone on Facebook. It's chatting on social media, having a conversation when in person. Well maybe not so much a chat, rather an exchange of barbs. A chat is a friendly conversation, an exchange of ideas or viewpoints. It's really rather a delicate balance between the two. There being a physical barrier, often many miles apart, the gloves are off when it comes to smart retorts. People are far bolder in their assertations and accusations on social media than they ever would be in person. I find myself being a bit bolder in that regard as well, I'm not immune from that.
As I was chatting with this individual, who had left a comment on my posting, I did thank her for reading my blog. The immediate retort was, I don't read your blogs. Okay, my mistake, just because you left a comment on that particular posting, I had assumed she read it. The truth was she had simply read my comment to someone else on that "thread", that's what they call all that these days, and rushed to the defense of the one I was talking about. An admirable quality I'll admit. You should come to the defense of your friends. My response to that was, I'd suggest that you do, read my blog that is, I've never learned anything from those that simply agree with me. I recall reading that bit of wisdom somewhere and have to acknowledge the validity of that statement. It can be an uncomfortable experience when it happens.
It's a strange thing though when there are those that comment only to antagonize. I understand it though, because if you want a response that is the easiest way to get it. We have all seen those meme's expressing that sentiment. Put a picture of something positive on Facebook and receive maybe three or four responses, likes or whatever. Post a political statement and people will pounce on that like a tiger on a fresh piece of meat! Post anything contrary to the current narrative of the left and be prepared to be assaulted. None of that stops me from posting my thoughts or opinions. It's the price I have to pay for using the platform. If I don't like it, I don't have to use it, or post a thing. It really does work both ways.
I do enjoy the comments and back and forth I have with some "friends" on Facebook. We don't all agree with each other's views on politics, the economy or other general topics. We often trade statistics we glean from the internet, the never-ending resource where you can locate something to support your position on virtually any topic. Statistics can be fun. They are especially fun when the statistical fact flies in the face of perception. A fact like those that identify as African American comprise about 14% of the population. Yet if only 1.4 African Americans were hired in a workforce of 100 the perception is discrimination. 1.4 isn't a fair representation. Another of my favorites is that the top 10% of the wealthiest people in America are paying 45.6% of all the taxes collected yet the cry is for them to pay their fair share! What share would that be? But that is how we learn things, get a fresh view sometimes.
The biggest issue I see is when people begin to feel like government should be emotional. No, the business of government should not be based on emotion, it's business. The government isn't a charity and has no business engaging in such. Well at least not without the consent of the entire electorate it shouldn't. That is where the problems begin. When our elected officials begin to dole out our money in exchange for continued support, we have a problem. Consider this latest round of loan forgiveness. No money is being forgiven; the debt is being transferred to everyone.
All that money has to be repaid! In 2021, the first year of Biden building back better, a staggering 2.6 trillion dollars was borrowed by the government to finance the budget. That all has to be repaid. We just gave away an additional 95 billion dollars in aid. Is that a financially responsible thing to do? No, it isn't but it is an emotional one. And your government is doing that while the college kids chant death to America, from the river to the sea and applying for loan forgiveness. Your representatives are waving foreign flags on the floor of the US House of Representatives! Business or an emotional response?   Present the facts on Facebook and you will quickly see what you get. An emotional response based on empathy, inclusiveness, acceptance and understanding. That's why we hear about three or more genders, kids identifying as cats, drag queens in the libraries, and gender affirming care. All emotional responses that ignore the facts altogether. The government can't just print more money every time it needs more. We the people have to borrow that money. Currently foreign entities hold about 7.4 trillion dollars of our debt. 26.6 trillion of our debt is owed by you! Yes, by you, we the people. Your tax money has to repay that loan. How much more do you think we should give away? How much are you willing to borrow to give to someone else? Remember you have to pay on that note, no one is forgiving your debt on any of that.

remember?

Never forget! Well, apparently, we have forgotten. How did we go from 9/11 to supporting terrorism? And there is no denying that Hamas is a terrorist organization. Hamas isn't Palestine. Not all Palestinians support Hamas but all suffer under their thumb. All these college students supporting Hamas is just astounding! When you are supporting a slogan, from the river to the sea, you are supporting terrorists! That slogan means that Israel as a nation should be eliminated, that territory taken from them and occupied by terrorists. What started out as a cry for the ending of hostilities, of war, has changed into a battle cry. These students are now encouraging, indeed empowering these terrorists to continue the conflict.
I'm not talking about any attacks on Muslim people. I'm not saying all Muslims are terrorists. I am saying the ones that attacked Israel most certainly are and should be exterminated! Any attack on Israel, or any other sovereign nation for that matter, should be met with force. Israel isn't attacking Palestine, they are defending themselves from terrorists.
Google this question. Has Israel declared war on Palestine? You won't get a straight answer to that. Google has Palestine declared war of Israel? You won't get a straight answer to that either. Is any declaration of war against Israel a declaration of war against all Jews? It certainly seems that way to me. Is any declaration of war against Palestine a declaration of war against all Muslims? That doesn't seem as clear now does it? Israel did declare war on Hamas. Hamas is a terrorist organization not a sovereign nation. Not much different than declaring a war on drugs really.
There are those "players" behind the scenes that provide the financial backing to engage in these attacks. The reason will always be the same, economic gain to the ones providing the funds. It is an investment! Yes, driven by an ideology those operatives are doing just that for profit. That is the hidden motivation behind all of this. It always has been and will continue. Alliances are formed for the same reason, benefit. Alliances are broken for the same reason, a benefit.
All that is required for support is a motivator. Indeed, it is the reason religions exist. Man has always sought the help, the blessing, the favor of whatever god or gods he felt beneficial to him. Willing to make sacrifices in return for that favor. The goal has always been to please the god(s). Now that in no way is intended to dismiss the existence of God, that higher power than us, that would indeed be a foolish assumption. Man can neither create nor destroy energy and that is what my understanding of God is. I can't understand it, explain it, but I sure believe in it. Call it your soul or your life energy it makes no difference, it exists.
What motivates the common man? The promise of something better is the short answer. Whether it is a better job, a better life, or a better afterlife, that is the motivator. The method to obtain such is the function of religious practices and beliefs. When I can convince the common man, the one that does the actual fighting and dying, that his religious practices will ensure something better, he is motivated. Yes, that is the strongest motivator, what I believe. In the absence of belief, all that remains is money. That being so the acquisition of money becomes the objective, the reason for fighting and dying. Is the objective of Hamas to provide something better to the people of Palestine? Just why would you support Hamas? That is the question I have for those protestors. Why? 9/11 was Al-Queda this is Hamas. Both are terrorists' organizations. Have we learned nothing, remembered nothing, and taught our children nothing.

Justice

The topic is presidential immunity. A complex issue and one the supreme court is wrestling with. The framers of the constitution never expected this to ever be an issue. They certainly felt that no one was above the law. In fact, it was their belief in the integrity, ethics, and moral values of those elected that would prevent that from ever becoming a question. They certainly made it clear that the power of the president wasn't absolute, the reason for the three branches of government.
The real question before the court is whether or not Trump broke any laws. Those opposing him certainly believe he did so while his supporters vehemently deny that. Should the president be immune from any prosecution if he did break the law? No, he shouldn't be immune from that. That takes us back to the central question, did Trump break any laws? Not being a legal scholar, I really can't say, only offer an opinion. Legally speaking he is being prosecuted and has been under constant legal attack for quite some time now. He certainly hasn't enjoyed any immunity thus far. It could be argued that a few of his predecessors certainly have or at least received far less attention.
I'll cut to the chase. This isn't about whether trump broke any laws or not. That isn't the purpose of this litigation. The sole purpose is to prevent trump from ever holding office again. This has nothing to do with justice. This is solely a political ploy, plain and simple. The final resolution will have to come from the supreme court in any case. You know and I know whatever the outcome is it will be appealed to the supreme court. This is an attempt to force the hand of the court. No, the president does not have absolute immunity from prosecution for committing any crimes, even while in office. That is the answer in its simplest form. But if that were the sole standard, the bottom line, Truman could have also been charged with a crime. He ordered the bombing of two Japanese cities killing thousands! Thousands of people today claim that was a crime against humanity! So, you see the issue here?
The court is being pressured to delineate what crimes are punishable, and what crimes are not. In short to define exactly what a crime is. Is intent a crime? Is taking an action that not everyone agrees to a crime? What crimes can the president commit? Was it a crime to question the election results? Is trump responsible for the reactions of the people on Jan 6? Is it a crime for not saying certain things that others feel he should have? Is that crime?
I don't have answers for those questions, that is going to be left to the court to decide all of that. All I'm saying is that it is obvious the prosecution of trump has nothing to do with justice. It only has to do with politics. It is an attempt to legally remove an opponent from the ballot, or to prevent that person from ever bring on the ballot in the first place. A legal assassination? It appears that way to me. Just what is a president allowed to do during his tenure? Can we make a complete listing of his powers? Executive powers have certainly been expanded since the signing of the constitution. There has been a "power grab" going on for some time now. And then there are "emergency" powers. If a president makes any error while using his emergency powers is that a crime?
We are at a critical juncture. The decision of the court will have a profound impact on the American justice system going forth. Each president will be under scrutiny and second-guessed. That isn't anything new, but being prosecuted for that certainly will be. To coin a phrase I hear often, and happen to detest, another tool in the toolbox. The threat of litigation for every decision made that ruffles someone's feathers. Only Congress should have the ability to remove a president from office or the ballot! Did Trump do anything illegal? Just remember this prosecution is coming from the same group that wants to allow Felons to vote, allow illegals to vote and insist that citizenship isn't a requirement to vote in our elections. Is this trial about justice?

Hardware

As a person that likes to do it myself, I find myself looking for parts quite often. Much like my dad I will work on, fix or repair just about anything with the exception of electronics. The world of transistors and resistors are still much of a mystery to me. Oh, I have a very basic understanding of their functions and somewhat understand circuits but know just enough to know this, leave it to someone else. While I was visiting my son his mower needed some repair. That should be easy enough. Well, we needed a simple nut and bolt that fastens the blade to the spindle. Turns out getting that particular nut and bolt isn't so simple to obtain after all. So far, all the places I have tried are reporting that piece out of stock. Needless to say, I'm a bit upset.
Here's the thing. That mower was manufactured in 2007 and so it's a new mower in my thinking. My car is a 2004 and I think of that as a newer model as well. But things change quickly these days and are considered obsolete. Yes, I've had that phrase pop up more than once in my searches. Then I've come to realize that in some cases the best place to look for my parts is at an antiques auction! Those items are old enough to be considered "just old junk" and can be found in that area. I've heard it said for a long time now, we are a throw away society and that is becoming increasingly evident to me. Build it fast, build it cheap, and make it irreparable to the consumer. That sure seems to be the business model these days. I can't say I wasn't told about that, heard the same thing from my dad.
Much of the stuff we have today will be of no use in the future whatsoever. That will be true even if that product is still new in the box. I have an older computer that I haven't used in a while. I plugged it in turned it on only to be met with this message, your system is out of date, download the latest updates. Thing was, the system on that computer is Windows 7, obsolete and no support is provided. Had a cell phone that wouldn't work because I now use a 5G network. Heard they are building a 10G network now. Yes, it is almost always a matter of the software and not the hardware that is the issue. I grew up in a hardware world.
I do miss the day of the local hardware store. Every town had one and it was packed to the gills with everything you could want. Hardware was everywhere and no software to be seen. Need a nut and bolt, no problem. Yes, you could get all your needs at the hardware store along with some good advice, good conversation and sometimes a helping hand. The shop keeper knew where everything was and was always there to help you out. Now the selection wasn't as great as these giant chain stores, but they would have would you needed to get the job done. And lumber, you bought that at the lumber yard.
The hardware store here in Greensboro closed some twenty years ago, a victim of Lowes and Home Depot I suspect. I did enjoy going there talking with Mr. Butler and sharing a few laughs. I remember painting my house and buying some paint from that store while it was on sale. I used what I had and had underestimated how much I needed. The sale was over, but Mr. Butler sold me two more gallons at the sale price anyway. Lowes doesn't do that. Yeah, I miss that store. The drug store took over that building and it remains as a small-town drug store. I like going there for my cards, some root beer barrel candies and shopping a little bit. I occasionally have a prescription filled there as well. It still has that old time feeling, it's comfortable.
I've reached that age where I am hard wired. Updates are difficult to install. Some may call that set in my ways, but I don't see it that way. I've been around for seventy years and still have most of my original parts. Yes a few have been repaired but are still serviceable. That's more than can be said for a great deal of this "modern" stuff that gets outdated and obsolete in a few years. Yup I like hardware and software is just a temporary thing. Software becomes useless and you can't even see it! I mean it isn't anything interesting to look at. Plenty of very old hardware will still function, do the job it was intended to do, and if nothing else, is cool to look at.

where to stand

Yesterday I was thinking about being on the side of history. Now I am no scholar when it comes to history. I'd say I have what you would call general knowledge in that regard. As far as the middle east goes that history is quite complicated to understand. Intermixed with religious beliefs the truth of what has transpired over the centuries is often clouded by that. Jersuluem has been attacked 52 times, captured 44 times, besieged 23 times and destroyed twice. Yeah, I looked that up. The Jewish people have been fighting with the Islamic people since ancient times. Of course, the Christians got involved along the way as well. Watching the news this morning I'm seeing this "bad blood" spill onto our college campuses right here in America. Antisemitic demonstrations are taking place. Others are calling it pro Palestine. And that is where things get a bit sticky.
In 1948 the Jewish state of Israel was officially proclaimed, Then president Harry Truman recognized that. Out of the 193 members of the United Nations 136 recognize Palestine as a country. 163 recognize Israel as of 2020. It's important to note that 15 of the nations that do not recognize Israel are members of the Arab league. Those nations are all Muslims. So, it's no surprise that they don't recognize Israel. But the biggest problem is in defining the Palestinians. Not all Palestinians belong to Hamas or any other terror group. Those are the people stuck in the middle. Those people mostly populated the Gaza strip. It's a real problem.
Israel has every right, indeed an obligation to defend itself. Israel was attacked by the Palestinians. I have to declare I am on the side of Israel in this war. It's my feeling the world should be on the side Israel. The claim by the Palestinians to the land are based on what? That they were there first? That is certainly debatable. Well, at the very least the Muslim Palestinians. Where did the Muslim people come from? Before there was Mohamed there were no Muslims, no Islam. We are talking about a religious belief. All religions begin somewhere with someone. And all religions rely on one thing, belief. Religion is certainly one of the most powerful motivators in all of mankind, second perhaps only to money.
Land and the occupation of that land has always relied upon conquest. Yes, you can wax on about that forever. You can debate the moral and ethical issues involved in all of that. None of that will ever change a thing. To the victor belongs the spoils and that will never change. When the first caveman eliminated the other one because he wanted that cave or food, it began. It continues to this very moment. We can debate history forever. The Muslims have been fighting the Jews since they became Muslims. Their religious belief impels them to do so. Ages ago the Pope declared a Holy War against the Muslims. We know that as the crusades. The objective there was to recapture Jerusalem. The war continues.
The case could be made that the Jewish people were there first. That wouldn't be a difficult thing to show. First there were Jews, then Christians and then Muslims. Those are the big three. Without the Jews there would never have been Christians or Muslims. So, the Jewish people were there first. Does that make them entitled to whatever land they wish to occupy? The Palestinians are using that very argument to justify their aggression towards the Jews. That's their argument, we were here first. The Jewish people proclaiming they are the chosen people of God and that is the land promised to them. The reality is simple enough, the land belongs to whoever can hold it. An unfortunate truth, a stark reality that we would all like to deny but history itself proves us wrong.
The United States of America is a Christian nation. You can argue all you want about that, cite the separation of church and state as evidence but it doesn't change a thing. The United States has always been based in Christian beliefs and attitudes. There have been synagogues in our country since our founding. The first known Mosque was established in 1915 in Maine. It is our Christian belief that allowed that.
Today I see that slipping away as immigration and social changes are taking place. I see religion itself being pushed to the back of the room. Are we seeing a rise in antisemitism? Is that in any way being influenced by the increasing number of Muslims in our country? In the last twenty years the Muslim population in America has doubled in size to about 3.5 million people. It is estimated by 2040 Muslims will outnumber the Jewish population. They will be second only to Christians, which it is worth noting loses more followers to conversion than any other group.
The thing is those protesting on the campuses today really don't understand what they are protesting at all. They are operating under some delusional idea that peace can be obtained by surrender. That isn't how victories are won! You can't win a thing by surrendering. You will never be respected if you fail to defend yourself. The Arab world would like nothing better than to see the total destruction of Israel. Why? There is no reasonable or rational answer to that. Well, there is a reason, and it has nothing to do with religion. It involves economics. All the rest is just justification for their actions. According to the Hebrew Bible David conquered Jerusalem taking it from the Jebusites. The Jebusites weren't Muslims! Those people, after their defeat scattered across the region and their descendants belong to any number of nations. And I would suggest that there were people there before the Jebusites. First come, first served. No, that's not how it works in the real world. It is always the last man standing that wins the battle.

two sides of history

Having disconnected for two days I find myself strangely a bit baffled and confused. I haven't seen the news, local or national and have had no interactions on Facebook. I feel like I have a lot to catch up on, with no desire to do so. The few items I've heard about are quite upsetting. Something about Columbia University students supporting Hamas terrorists! Having heard only a small portion of that I'm not certain I have the truth of the matter. I certainly hope what I did hear was wrong. I did hear someone set themselves on fire outside the Trump trial. Didn't hear why. The jury and alternatives have been selected. I don't see how that was even possible. I really don't believe anyone in America doesn't have some preconceived idea about the guilt of innocence of Trump. The question: to me is, if he wasn't running for office would these charges even have been brought against him?
I thought for a moment or two this morning about not writing a blog posting at all. I realize they have turned more into a commentary on current events than anything else. I defend that by saying, they are my thoughts. I also include some memories every now and again to justify my postings. I'm thinking I may take this time to refocus. My original intent in writing these posts was to leave a sort of record of my life for future generations to ponder. But it is that thought that has made the inclusion of current events an integral part of that. I sure would be interested to read the thoughts of my ancestors regarding what was current events to them! A bunch of Rebels (definitely insurrectionists) have fired upon Fort Sumter! That happened on April 12, 1861. Lincoln called for the troops to recapture the Fort and quell the rebellion. I know what history says, but I wonder what those ancestors would have to say.
History certainly influences who we become. That is an indisputable fact. That has been and continues to be function of the media. In the past it was as simple as word of mouth, then the written word in many forms, followed by radio, television and to what we have today. Today the news appears to be influenced more by revenue than any sort of civic responsibility. I do believe that in the past journalists and newsmen like Brinkley and Cronkite did exercise a sense of civic responsibility. Today I'm not so certain, I do not have that sense of trustworthiness, that confidence in their opinions. Certainly, their definition of integrity is far different than what was expected fifty years ago. I'm hearing just now that the NPR is being called into question. A call to defund that based on biased reporting. The extreme accusation being it has been used as a tool of propaganda. I couldn't say either way as I really haven't listened to NPR.
I guess it will be clear to whoever reads these blogs of mine what side of history I stood on. I can't help but wonder what it will be. Our hope is that we are on the right side but how can we determine which side that is? I certainly have no crystal ball, no way of seeing what the future will be. All I can do is stand upon my principles and my beliefs. I have said it before, call it a confession if you like, but I do get satisfaction from saying, "told you so." My hope is that in the future someone reads what I have written and goes, you know, he was right about that. Or perhaps someone will read that and say, well now I understand why that happened, I get it. The only question left being what side of history will be presented to the public. Well, all depends upon the view. The best I can do is present my view and hope that is what you see.

what's your twenty?

Leaving this morning for a quick visit with my son in New York state. Still a bit chilly upstate but I promised to help out with a few things. He just had some minor surgery on his hand and so could use a hand. LOL His mower needs a need clutch and his car a few abs sensors replaced. I can handle that. I've booked a hotel, prices have gone up, filled the gas tank, price has gone up and checked on the tolls and they have gone up. But on the bright side I'm not driving an electric vehicle! The drive should take about six hours or so according to google maps. I have to admit I like that service, although I get annoyed when it keeps saying, recalculating. But occasionally I hear, speed trap ahead or there is an alternate route that will save me five minutes. Yes, an improvement over the maps I used to get at the gas station. Of course, not so good when you lose the signal.
I will be taking the alternate route to avoid tolls and the interstates as much as possible. Yes, it takes a little longer but is far more scenic. It also provides far more opportunity to stop and get a drink or whatever. I do drive an older vehicle; a 2004 Ford Focus and it isn't the best for the interstate crowd. Oh, it will cruise all day long at 60 or 65 mph without any issues, but most are driving 75 or 80! I'm getting old I guess; I don't want to drive at those speeds anymore and especially don't want to do that in my little Ford. No hurry, I'll get there when I arrive. The drive across the mountains is always an adventure and I like to enjoy the view.
This short visit will also be a short break from social media. I may post my good morning or check in for a minute or two but nothing beyond that. I'm not taking a laptop with me. I've found it is always a hassle to connect to the free wi-fi networks and have read where they aren't really very safe. Not that I'm worried about anyone seeing my personal information or scamming me but there are those that seem to be happy just to mess up your computer. I think it best to simply avoid all that whenever I can. Facebook will be in business when I get back. My e-mail will be overflowing with junk, spam and all the contests I have won. I'll send all that to the trash bin when I get home.
Time to get going. Keeping the greasy side down and the shiny side up, on the road again. Heading north, but not to Alaska. Not taking route 66. 10-4. Not warm enough to need air conditioning in the car, although it is equipped with such, so I'll roll down the window. Well, that electric motor will lower it anyway, I miss my vent window. The map lady will be giving me directions. Catch you on the flip side, road dog over and out. I'll be 10-100 a few times and hoping to avoid a 10-42.

get real

I'm wondering if AI is interfering in my Facebook feeds and posts. There appears to be a good deal of strange happenings on there. Now I don't feel like I am anyone that would draw the attention of anyone significant. I realize I'm not that important or influential in any way. I am just one voice in the wilderness, to coin a phrase. I'm not a prophet though, no John the Baptist by any means, but just an elder statesman. Or a cranky old man depending upon your view. But that's the thing, AI wouldn't know the difference at all. My concern is just who is programming the AI?
As with all technology it can be used for good or bad. All technology is a tool. It is the method in which the tool is used that determines whether it had a positive or negative effect. Works that way with everything. We hear a lot about gun violence, how guns are killing people. We all know that isn't the case, it is people that are killing people using the gun as a tool to accomplish that. It's the same logic as, Big Mac's make me fat. Yes, when you eat Big Mac's you are consuming a good number of calories. The Big Mac just sitting there does nothing.
Not that long ago AI was placing me and many others in Facebook jail. That seems to have been modified just a bit, the tool tweaked. A coincidence that it happened after the majority of the people were vaxxed and/or at least complied and stayed silent about any doubts they may have had? It would appear that the "community" standards have changed. What aren't we supposed to talk about now? Whatever it is I haven't been warned about it, yet. Still, I have noticed some comments seem to be appearing in places where I didn't place them. They are being moved about, lower in the feed and sometimes on a different day. I don't always get those notifications when someone leaves a comment anymore either.
I have heard that the government may be monitoring our social media accounts for various reasons. I really don't care if they are or not. If that helps prevent any terrorist attacks or removes some dangerous folks from society, I'm cool with that. I have nothing to hide and if I did, I wouldn't be stupid enough to post it on Facebook. Anyone that thinks anything they post on social media is in any way private or protected is an idiot! If the hackers haven't convinced you of that by now, you are really quite dense. Perhaps that AI is a tool of the government. If that is the case it needs to be tweaked a bit more. Well, it is a developing technology isn't it.
In a way it is nice to think that someone is paying attention to what I post, what I say or think. It's kind of flattering. Makes me feel like I might be a little bit dangerous to the powers that be, making them uncomfortable. Thing is that the truth is usually uncomfortable until we accept it. That's the big issue with a lot of these liberal folks, accepting a simple truth. Truths like, I don't care how you feel, there are only two genders. Another truth is, not everyone will like you, accept you and include you. And guess what? There are people smarter, better looking and richer than you. Yes, some folks have it like that! Get over it and quit crying. Will anything, I ever write or say change anything?
Most likely not, and I accept that truth, seems the only one I'm fooling is AI, and that isn't real. That's the truth of the matter. Artificial Intelligence isn't very smart at all, it all based on the opinion of the programmer. If you have any doubts just Google it. You will get the "correct" answer as determined by the programmer. I use that service frequently and have come to understand that. An awful lot depends upon the question being asked. Occasionally I get a message saying they won't even discuss that anymore, ask a different question. Yes, I have made AI uncomfortable with my questions. Pretty funny stuff. That AI sure hates it when you want to get real.

not too late

I'm thinking the disappointment of aging is when you realize the future has rejected your plans. That is what America is experiencing at this very moment. We the people are becoming frustrated, disillusioned and disappointed. When Franklin was asked, what kind of government have you given us Dr, his response was, a Republic if we can but keep it. The Republic is slipping away from us at an alarming rate. It is the everyday people, the commoners that are the most aware of this because they are the most connected. It isn't much different than what it was two hundred and fifty years ago in that regard. The call for change came from those people. They were the shop owners and tradesman. The very wealthy were quite content, until it began to impact their business.
The future is rejecting that republic, the land that I grew up in. I remember as a child reciting the pledge of allegiance in my classroom. I remember going to the parades with my parents and watching the veterans proudly marching in formation. I remember wearing a poppie to honor and remember those long gone. The flag would come by, and all the men stood at attention, removing their hats and the ladies standing tall in silence and respect. I remember when America being exceptional wasn't considered a bad thing. In this future I hear that we should not be exceptional, we should be inclusive, like everyone else. But that isn't what I was taught and what I want for my nation. The United States of America should lead the world, should be feared and respected as the leader! That certainly isn't the case under our current leadership!
It has been said that an empire lasts about 250 years. Scholars have debated whether the United States is considered an empire and like most things it is really a matter of semantics. It our ever-changing use of language and what we mean to imply what that language, it is debatable. But the principles of our republic were never to be an empire. In fact, just the opposite. We are anti-imperial, self-sufficient, and stress individual liberty. Those are hardly the qualities of an empire. Today, if asked, what form of government did Franklin give us the most common answer would be a democracy. Franklin would be appalled! That isn't what the constitutional convention and ratification process that spanned 5 years and nine months to complete established. No, it was a republic.
Rural America is in contradiction to Urban America. The commoners at odds with the city folk. Those folks in the cities do have a different mindset. Having become conditioned to live with crime and overcrowding, focusing on themselves and their needs they have become jaded. We call them liberals. They have abandoned the republic in favor of a more autocratic form of governance. The irony being their feeling that each individual is that autocrat! The individual replacing the majority. Many of our colleges and universities are teaching this new dogma of self. They are failing to teach that self-sacrifice and self-denial are the cornerstones of a republic.
But the republic is in decline no doubt about that. Perhaps it began when our representatives became paid political pawns. The original idea was for our representatives to represent us, not the interests of the wealthy. Our representatives were farmers, lawyers, prominent men of the community and represented the interests of their neighborhoods. It wasn't an occupation to them; it was a solemn honor and duty.   Perhaps that decline began as soon as it was established. The first ten amendments were added to the original document just three years later. The bill of rights. A protection for the people against government. That is what concerned James Madison and others and precipitated those amendments. Additional amendments have been added since and some grant more power to the government. And today there is a call to repeal the second amendment altogether. The need for that amendment is just as relevant today as it was in 1789.
Perhaps the decline began when it was decided that the separation of church and state meant the separation of belief in a higher power. Our representatives were not to consider any moral implications to legislation, to place no weight on moral considerations. It's just business! But not in my America it isn't. And that is where I find myself. I see the future rejecting the America I grew up in and came to love. I served in the Navy for twenty years and was always proud to an American wherever I traveled in the world. Yes, I am an American and yes, we are exceptional. And when you are exceptional there are no exceptions! And that is how we can preserve the Republic! As Walter may say, "and that's the way it is"
Remember when you vote in November what is at stake. I can't bring myself to believe it is too late to save the Republic. I believe in America. I always have.

a great victory

So, I turn on the news this morning and I hear the mayor of Baltimore holding a press conference. In this conference he is bragging about taking down two drug gangs in the city of Baltimore. His crime reduction initiative is working! He explains that after a year long investigation in partnership with federal agents these gangs were identified. His first response was this. He sent them a letter! Yes, that's what he did, he sent them a letter and he made a point of letting the press now he personally signed that letter. In that letter he began by telling them he knew who they were and what they were doing! He admonished them, telling such behavior would not be tolerated. He went on to explain that in that letter he also offered them help. Yes, they could get help like rehab, job training, housing and any number of professional services simply for the asking. He expressed his concern for their well-being, emphasizing his desire that they not come to any harm. All they had to do was stop! But they didn't. And so, he had to take them down and they were all arrested! They can't say they weren't warned and given every opportunity to comply.
Fifteen people were arrested, numerous weapons confiscated, 6300 hundred dollars in cash, and a large cache of drugs. He didn't want to do it, but they refused to quit. Now those weapons are undergoing testing to see if they were involved in any other crimes. Oh, someone is going to get in trouble if they were but none of those weapons are registered so ownership is going to be difficult to prove. No word on what happens to the 6300 dollars in cash. Just another charge for those criminals, they didn't have the proper permits for those firearms! Luckily his Crime Reduction plan is working. They watched, they waited, and they got them dead to rights, only took a year. Then they were given warning, a chance to reform their ways but they refused. Now they will be rehabilitated whether they want to or not. Let that be a lesson, a message to anyone else thinking of operating a criminal enterprise in the city of Baltimore. You will only get one letter of warning; the mayor isn't fooling around.
I'm thinking that struck a chord of fear in every thug in the city and they are scrambling for services as I write. You only get a year to conduct your drug dealing business before you will get a warning letter. Then the hammer comes down and you are arrested. Of course, services will still be offered to make you a model citizen because after all, it isn't your fault. You just needed some counseling, some understanding and empathy, perhaps some housing or a monthly stipend. Hey, the squeegee kids are under control now that they are getting paid to not be on the street. That program was a great success. Yes, it's a great victory for justice.

advanced

I'm old enough to remember when the admonishment was, keep a civil tongue in your head. Today I'm reading studies that claim the more foul language you use the more intelligent you are. This study, of course, was written and published by scholars that I'm certain use such language frequently. I do find it disturbing that this sort of language has become so prevalent in our society. To me it shows a lack of respect for others, and a loss of civility. Have we really lowered the bar that much? Yeah, I know I'm just an old person with old fashioned ways, I'm not cool.
Now that sort of language is aggressive by nature. It is meant to imply a sense of authority or brute force. It conveys a sense of anger or agitation. You really mean it when you add in a few choice expletives, even when they are adjectives or nouns! It's especially effective when you tell someone to engage in a sexual act with themselves. Yes, that certainly makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? None of that adds anything to the conversation it just contributes to the drama. You must be a very tough person if you use that sort of language. But now I'm reading I should be thinking, wow you must be super intelligent to use those words in a sentence, and to use them frequently.
It's interesting to note that the majority of these studies make the claim that swearing, cursing or whatever term you wish to use is beneficial to the speaker. That is the positive part about all that, if there is a positive. But the studies show people who swear often feel better about themselves. The studies don't mention how the ones being sworn at or others around the person swearing feel. That doesn't enter the equation, only how the speaker feels. So, the analysis is, if it makes you feel good, just do it. The "hell" with everyone else! See how smart I am? Swearing is good for my mental health and may have health benefits by lowering my blood pressure and relieving stress.
Still, us old people were taught a little bit different. We were taught there was a time and place for everything. There is that situation where you are in what I call "polite company." The name implies the sort of dialogue you should have, polite, courteous and respectful of others. One does not use foul or offensive language in polite company. There are situations and places where such language is acceptable and expected. There are even moments when in polite company the judicious use may be necessary to attract attention, to prevent harm.
When I was in the Navy such vocabulary was a part of the society. Mostly young men putting their alpha sides on full display. The testosterone raging. The message was clear, I'm a tough guy. Even in that situation however there were times when you refrained from using such language, especially when addressing your superiors. To curse like a sailor. It means far more than just using profane or vulgar language, it means to be creative in its' usage. That creativity is certainly lacking in the public sector. I'd say the cursing is more by rote these days. In the service I'd suggest that cursing is used a means of self defense, self-preservation and retaining ones' mental wellbeing. Has our society become such a place that it requires the use of such language? That's something for a sociologist to study!
Now I could write an entire dissertation on this subject. I could provide sources and all manner of surveys and polls. The thing is it wouldn't be reviewed as I don't belong to the club. I do not hold any degrees beyond a high school diploma. Therefore, anything I write would be inconsequential in the academic world. My thesis would be summarily rejected as something "put forth" from an uneducated person. That's what the diplomas are for, to prove how intelligent you are and now apparently, how frequently you cuss. You see the thing about a thesis is you have to have first studied every other thesis on the subject. Your thesis has to be original. The truth is, there isn't much you can say that someone hasn't already said. I'm quite aware of that. You just have to figure out a way to say it in a way that others haven't heard before. You have to be creative. I wonder if I submitted a thesis which included a vulgar expletive before every point I'm making if that would be effective. It's a sign of intelligence, or so I've read. An advanced civilization. "F,ing" right

In time

While scrolling through my Facebook feed, I saw a comment concerning God. I believe the comments were in response to a meme. I guess I should start taking Prevergen to improve my memory, but I keep forgetting to buy it. Anyway, this meme says something to the effect of when you get old and begin to reflect upon your own mortality you realize that it is in Gods' hands. A comment was left saying, which one. Was that intended as a barb to others' comments or a genuine question? It did come across as a bit sarcastic and somewhat demeaning. The answer is of course quite subjective and open to different interpretations. In this modern world the general consensus is there is only one God, if there is any god at all. The fact and the belief, depending.
It is my belief that there is indeed but one God, the creator of heaven and earth and indeed the entire cosmos. With my limited knowledge and understanding it only makes sense. All of this had to start somewhere and somehow. I just can't believe it was all a cosmic accident, a by change situation. Too much order in the chaos for it to be otherwise. That is a topic I have written about several times and will most likely write about again. So that much being established and presented with the question, which one, I can only respond, there is only one. What the person is really asking is, in what manner do you practice that belief? That is the source of friction between those that accept that God exists, what Gods' requirements of us are. It is what we call dogma. That is what was being asked, what is the dogma of your religious practices?
Did the ancients with their multiple gods and goddesses really believe any different? Was their concept the Gods were an alien race that created us? That could be debated but modern scholars say that isn't true and a much simpler answer is provided. The Gods simply reflect the many emotions and abilities of people. Some were stronger, some were wiser, and others were troublemakers. The Gods could help or hurt. The belief remained however that the Gods could influence the actions of man. Did they help directly? No, they didn't directly intervene in the affairs of men just provided guidance and inspiration. Their idea of heaven and hell were a bit different than what we believe today but still bears a remarkable resemblance. Their dogma was really not much different than what is practiced today. It is always an attempt to please God(s) and gain favor. No one wants to incur the wrath of any God(s).
Of course there are those that profess no such belief at all. These folks dismiss the possibility of a God altogether. The reason for doing so I can't say, it would all be speculation on my part. I don't believe it is a function of intelligence, as it is a concept, an idea and a belief that can never be proven or disproven through intellectual means. That is the nature of belief.
The search for the truth must, of necessity, take many roads. I do believe in the end the truth will be revealed. Will those without belief be punished? That is a complex question. It's true that Christian dogma teaches that only through Jesus can you reach heaven. You must have faith! But it is also what I would say if I were trying to get you to follow me and we should remember that the dogma of a religion is written by man. Is it written through divine inspiration? Did the Saints and Scribes really hear the words from God? All that could be debated endlessly but it comes down to one thing, belief. You can certainly believe in God without following the dogma of any established religion. I don't believe any of that is a prerequisite. I believe in judgement. God will judge you and that's that. That is the consequence of mortality.
The only question remaining for me is what are the possible judgements? Heaven or Hell? Good and Bad? As with most everything it becomes down to a binary thing. It's either one way or the other. There is no escaping that reality. Will we be aware of that judgement? That is central to belief. I believe that we will be very much aware of that. I believe that based on a scientific fact. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. All man can do is transform energy from one state to another. The moment may be brief, but I do believe I will be aware of that transformation. But time is eternal and therefore the measurement of that time is also quite subjective. We don't understand time at all. Time is just a belief. Still, I believe I will know the answer, in time.

I have questions

Having done a little reading and research about this student loan forgiveness I'm left with questions. Thousands of people are having their loan, or a portion of their loan forgiven which means someone else will have to pay that back. Forgiveness doesn't make the loan disappear; it just places the burden elsewhere. The money was borrowed from the taxpayers of the United States and must be paid back. Perhaps the plan is to borrow some more money from another country to satisfy that debt, a common tactic employed these days. We do owe about 6.8 trillion dollars to other nations. The balance of the 34.6 trillion-dollar debt is public debt, what we the people owe to our own government.
Now if we borrow that money from another nation to satisfy that debt, we most certainly will pay interest on that loan. That's the reason people or nations lend money you know, to make more money. Loans are not charity. We, the United States of America, are currently paying about 79 million dollars a day in interest to China alone! We paid 659 billion in interest to foreign countries last year and it is projected we will pay 859 billion this year. This loan forgiveness adds an additional 7.4 billion dollars to the debt. Will it be foreign debt? Or is it to be domestic/public debt. Does that matter? We are currently paying 479 billion in interest on the public debt. Basically, every American is paying interest on their own money.
I won't pretend I really understand how all this high finance works. The more I read about it the more confused I become. I do understand completely how interest payments work. I understand the reason for that interest. We all know the value of a dollar always gets less and seldom becomes more. We call that the economy. When the economy is strong the dollar holds its' value and when weak it decreases. Interest is an attempt to cover, at a minimum, the depreciated value of the dollar. So, if I borrowed 10,000 today and pay it back over a period of time the one loaning the money is hoping to get that sum back plus interest. That includes the federal government. The government was counting on that money to be returned to the treasury with interest! It makes no difference at all if it is an individual or a nation that loaned the money, the intent was the same.
Okay, so we decided to just forgive those loans or portions of those loans. The thing is, we aren't forgiving all the loans, only select loans. The criteria is spelled out. I found it interesting that the loans being forgiven are ones where under 12,000 dollars for college was borrowed and you have been making payments for at least ten years. All borrowers will have their loan forgiven if they have made payments for twenty and twenty-five years depending upon if they have loans for graduate schools. Thing is the interest rate on those loans are all below 8% which isn't all that much. Private loans are usually under 15%.
So, how is it that the interest accrued to the point where forgiveness is justified? Could it be that the loans being forgiven aren't really an issue at all? Could it be that this loan forgiveness is really just a political ploy to influence the voters? 92% of student loan debt is held by the government, about 1.7 trillion dollars. This advertised amount of 7.4 billion in forgiveness is just a drop in the proverbial bucket. It is really just a feel good measure. You have to have been making payments for at least ten years for that loan to be forgiven. Twenty and twenty-five years for graduate studies. It isn't doing anything for those currently attending any college or university.
As I said I won't pretend to understand how all this works but if someone borrowed less than 10,000 dollars to get a college education to obtain that education, that degree, and has been unable to pay that back in ten years or more, I have questions. Cars cost at least twenty thousand, a loan is taken out, and that is expected to be repaid in five years. No loan forgiveness on that. The median cost of a home today is 450,000 dollars, a loan is taken out, paid back in thirty years. Heck you can finance a I phone for two years. My question is, how come the loan wasn't paid back? The interest isn't all that much. 10,000 dollars borrowed at a rate of 5.45% for ten years equals a monthly payment of 108.28 a month. And these college graduates can't manage that? I have questions.
The bottom line is really a simple one. We all borrow money; finance the things we want or need. The reason for borrowing the money has nothing to do with the repayment of that money. Governments and individuals loan money to make money. You are responsible for the repayment of that loan. It doesn't make a bit of difference if you have buyer's remorse. You agreed to the terms, signed the documents and entered into a legal agreement.

character

I consider myself fortunate to have been born and raised in a small town. A community of farmers and fishermen. That place is my home and will always remain so. Even though I haven't lived there in over fifty years if asked, where are you from, that will be the answer. Isn't that what we ask? At other times we say, where do you live, a different question entirely. From the outside I have watched as that town changed, the social structure being the biggest change. Outside influences have taken over the political direction. Really it is money and power that precipitated that change. That's true most everywhere and not an isolated thing. The popularity of my town grew as a playground for the rich and with that arrived different attitudes and a different sense of well, sensibilities. Yes, the wealthy and powerful do have a different view of things.
Looking back, I can compare the decades I lived there to a fictional town, Mayberry. There were many similarities. The stores were like those on that show, the town was like that except we had the ocean and the bay. The Police were our friends and neighbors. We knew them, respected them, and they did so in return. I could ride my bicycle anywhere without worry or concern. I was aware I was being watched, as I knew any adult at any moment could and would correct any wrongdoing on my part. And what was worse, report that behavior to my parents! We addressed any one older than ourselves by ten years or so as Mr., Mrs., or Sir and Ma'am. We wore our good clothes to school and church and changed for work or play.
We also had "characters" that lived in the town. In Mayberry you had Otis, the drunk that would place himself in jail. We didn't have an Otis, but we had Moose Brown. I remember him well. Yes, he did like the drink and was often seen in an inebriated state. An alcoholic. Most definitely a classic case of alcoholism. But Moose bothered no one, didn't engage in any outrageous behaviors and generally kept to himself. Oh, he would ask you if you had any spare change, but never more than once. I always happened to have a spare quarter for Moose. There was a man I knew as eel spear. He rode a bicycle, the tires were taped to the rims as they didn't hold air, and he carried an eel spear. He would be going eeling to make a few dollars. That was just one of the many things he did to earn a living. I don't believe he drank though, just didn't have steady employment.
And there were a few other "characters" around. Porky, Wimpy and AA. All were accepted for what they were and no one that I was aware of ever tried to intervene. There were no interventions, no getting them help, or any of that. I guess by todays' sentiments we all lacked empathy. I don't see it that way at all. I say we were far more inclusive back then then anyone is today. And that is doubly true of those rich folks that always want to "help" others so they can appear virtuous. We treated those "characters" with respect, at least to their faces we did, and that was sufficient unto the day. It's true that most of those characters were well aware of what was being said behind their backs, they may have been poor, had a drinking problem or whatever, but they weren't stupid.
I'd go as far as to say those characters were an integral part of the town. They belonged there as much as anyone else. Maybe their homes weren't all that fancy, maybe their yards were full of junk, perhaps their hygiene left something to be desired, but they all had hearts of gold as far as I could tell. Like the mythical Otis they had troubles and dealt with those problems. Some did so with drink, others did so in other ways.
I have watched over the years as the residents of Mayberry sold their homes and moved on. I have seen the children of those residents unable to afford a home there and move on. I've seen Floyd's barber shop disappear, replaced by what I don't know. The 5&10 has been long gone and main street populated by stores I couldn't afford to buy a pair of socks in. I wonder do any characters still live there. I'm thinking the defining of the town characters would be a bit different today. Even Opie has gone woke! I'm thinking the character of the town has changed entirely. It's a shame, but what we call progress.

a fact

Defending your opinion and defending the facts. There are those that can't seem to differentiate between the two. That is what leads to all the squabbling and hard feelings among people. I make an honest attempt to make known my opinion. Facts aren't a matter of opinion. It does get contentious when the other individual refuses to accept a fact for what it is, a fact. Often, I will hear some explanation concerning the degree of fact, as though that were a thing. Facts are binary things, just like human beings. They are either true or false. Take abortion as an example. The purpose of an abortion is to terminate a life. The reason for doing so has no bearing on that result. If the procedure isn't performed what is the expected result? A baby will be born, either male or female. So, the fact remains, the purpose of an abortion is to terminate a life. It's simply what it does. Stating a reason for doing so doesn't change that.
Most Americans would agree, indeed most of the world population would agree, that we all have a right to life. It's written in the 14th amendment. "No state shall deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law" It's true that nowhere in the constitution does it say, "right to life" but that amendment certainly implies it. If a person is pregnant that indicates a life has been created within the womb. That's what being pregnant is. The manner in which that event took place also doesn't change the outcome, a child will result.
And that is where opinion enters the picture. In my opinion there are circumstances that would indeed justify the use of that procedure. To save a life. That is what that procedure should be used for, saving a life not taking a life. The loss of life is the unfortunate side-effect of the procedure, not much different from side-effects due to medications. In my opinion that procedure should never be on-demand, simply because. Setting aside all religious belief, it is wrong to kill another human being without that person receiving due process. Yes, in my opinion the death penalty is a viable option for those that commit crimes where other lives are taken.
So, we are left with defining what is a life. We all agree on what life is and we all agree what death is. It has been defined, delineated and accepted since the beginning of time. You are either alive or dead, a binary function. That leaves us defining the state of living. That is to say, how do you feel about your life? Is your life more valuable than someone else's? Our first instinct is to defend ourselves. Yes, we do think our life is more valuable. We may choose to put our life in jeopardy in defense of others, we may choose to risk our life in many ways and then we portray that as a noble sentiment.
Is terminating a life for the preservation of our own an acceptable response. Terminating a life is denying that person a life! Is there a set time period when a life should be protected? If that is the case shouldn't there then be a set end point as well? I mean, hey you are sick, going to cost a lot of money to treat you, I wasn't planning on this, and it will disrupt my life. Shouldn't I have a right to terminate you? Those are some of the reasons you choose to terminate a pregnancy, a life. What's the difference? And yes, there are those that put a name on that as well, calling it euthanasia. Others call it assisted suicide. We have established hotlines and are questioned about our mental well-being at every visit to the doctors office. Do you feel like killing yourself? That's terrible, that's wrong and we will do everything in our power to prevent that, well unless we help you do it that is, then it's fine. That's the logic there isn't it? You can't choose that by yourself you have to have someone agree with you, help you, in order for it to be an honorable choice. But that shouldn't apply if you are pregnant right, your choice alone. Just terminate on demand.
All of that is a matter of opinion. I state the facts as I believe them to be. My opinion was formed based on those facts. I understand that you may have a different opinion, sometimes derived from the same facts, but that doesn't change the facts. Once the egg has been fertilized, life has begun. A fact. Females have the eggs and when they are not fertilized no child results. When the egg (s) are fertilized we say, she is with child. That's because a life has been created. That's a fact and that's why some want to abort, to terminate, because they don't want that life to continue. And that is also simply a fact. You can provide a different opinion on that, but it won't change that fact no matter how uncomfortable that fact may be. In my opinion that fact should bother you! It has nothing to do with religious belief, it has to do with human nature. Life should be preserved whenever possible.
There are circumstances where life is taken, and we always have regrets, at least that is what we will say. Strange how so many can say having an abortion, terminating that life, is just fine an option, just a simple choice, no problem and should be funded by the government, "enshrined" in our constitution. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness that comes with a disclaimer. You may be aborted at any time, for any reason. My body, my choice, your life.

not a DIY deal

Haven't heard much about the Ohtani betting scandal. The story, as google tells it, is that Ohtani is the victim in all of this. His best friend and interpreter stole the money from him to pay off gambling debts. Four and a half million dollars and Ohtani didn't even notice. Is that plausible? I don't know, never having had such a great deal of money that I didn't, or couldn't, count it all myself. I'm thinking I would have noticed, but maybe not. He did sign a ten year 700 million dollar deal with the Dodgers. So, 70 million a year. If I had seventy dollars and four went missing, I would know it. If I had 70 million and four and hall million went missing I may not.
I don't expect much will come of this simply because of the money involved. The money I'm talking about isn't Ohtani's money though, I'm talking about the revenue MLB gains from having Ohtani around. Can't make much money off of disgraced players. Well at least players that are superstars! If he were just another ballplayer, it would be a different scenario entirely. I can't pretend to really understand all of this but realize that one player, one star can make a huge difference and that is the reason for the large contract. The Dodgers believe it is worth the investment. Way back in 1989 Pete Rose famously agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball for betting on games. Its' important to remember he was the manager of the Reds at that time. Had he still been an active player the outcome may have been different. But he wasn't and could be used to make an example. He agreed to the ban in a settlement. Years later he admitted that he had indeed bet on baseball but always for the Reds to win, as though that somehow made it right. It's like the Robin Hood thing. It's okay to be a thief, as long as you give the money away.
A lot has changed over the years in regard to gambling. In 1989 there were lotteries, casino gambling, horse racing, and four states had sports betting on a limited basis. Still gambling was frowned upon generally in our society as something seedy or immoral when actual money was involved. Well, unless it was Bingo down at the church, that was fine. Today gambling is becoming the major revenue source for government programs. You can gamble on anything, anytime without even having to leave your home! It is still "against the rules" for any player to bet on any sport. That's part of the agreement. No betting on games. You can't give the money to someone else and have them bet for you either. Now just how that is supposed to be enforced I can't say.
The thing with this Ohtani situation is this. If his friend admits that he stole that money to pay off his gambling debts, and that Ohtani didn't know anything about that, Ohtani shouldn't face any consequences for that, he's the victim! Now Ohtani could just simply say, I don't want to press charges against my friend and no crime was committed in the eyes of the law. Well, maybe he could be charged with placing illegal bets but not for the theft of the money. So, then what do you do to him? I don't know what the punishment for that is. Ohtani comes out as the good guy and continues his baseball career and his march to the hall of Fame. Everyone makes money and everyone is happy. Did Ohtani know? I'm thinking we will have to wait for the book. Rose took 14 years to admit to his lie. He did so, I feel, in an attempt to get into the Hall of Fame. Ohtani will have no such motivation. Pete should have just had someone else do that for him, but he didn't. Take that anyway you like.

what's best

I feel empowered! Yesterday I fought the power and did not observe the eclipse at all. Despite the urging, the hype, the "once in a lifetime" event I avoided the danger! You can mark me safe from the eclipse. It was a touch and go situation, but I made it. I'm a survivor.
So now I'm waiting for the next big thing to be concerned or upset about. I mean I heard that Trumps' request for a delay in his trial has been rejected and his motion to move the trial also. That doesn't really upset me or cause any great concern. The agenda is clear enough for anyone to see, get Trump at any cost, on any charge or accusation. Back in 1934 John Dillinger was named as public enemy number one and Trump is apparently number two in some circles. I don't begrudge others for endorsing the candidate of their choice, that's the backbone of our republic but your support should be more than, I hate the other person. That I do find a bit concerning. When your entire campaign really just revolves around, we hate Trump.
I'm wondering what the media will focus their attention on now. It won't be Biden refusing to resupply the oil reserves or the border crisis that much is certain. With summer coming on it could be that dreaded climate change/global warming thing. See, it's getting warmer outside I told you so! Could be the student loan debt. Bidens hope for buying that demographic is fading fast, but we can still talk about it. Maybe it won't all be forgiven but we could offer other options, especially to those that have suffered from systemic issues. After all, it isn't their fault, it's the system! If everyone just paid into the system equally, those that are in the minority could benefit from the majority. And that is the only way equality can be achieved! When the 2% is fully supported by the 98%, the 2% become equal.
Majority rule only applies when the minority wins. If the majority wins that's systemic. You do understand that logic, right? It's what is being taught at our colleges and universities. Some call that CRT. The premise being that government, our republic, is rife with racism. The whole system benefits white people. Well, currently white people are in the majority. White people have always been in the majority in this country. According to some predictions that will change in 2045 and white people will no longer be in the majority. Then the white folks can complain about racism. And that is the complaint. CRT teaches that all white people are simply racists! White people established a republic, enslaved black people and created a system to benefit only themselves. Globally white people comprise 72% of the world population. Asians are at 14% and blacks come in third at 6% of the world population.
Now most people agree that the majority should rule. It's the only reasonable way to run an organization of any kind. You can't just have everyone doing their own thing. Yes, everyone should be represented, everyone gets their say, but in the end the majority has to rule. In a simple democracy the 51 overrule the 49. That's why we created a republic, to sort of even the odds you might say. If we went with a simple democracy globally what are the chances the blacks or Asian people will ever achieve a majority?
So far it isn't looking good. Does that make all the white people in the world racists? That's the jest of critical race theory. Well at least in our republic it is, and the thinking is we should just go with a simple democracy because well, that's fair. Yes, as a white person I would like that very much because I'm going to win every single time. Well, that's if all white people share the same beliefs, the same ideology and all agree on the issue being voted on. And all the white folks think alike, right? Yeah, those folks in NYC have the same values, the same concerns and the same philosophy as those in Lincoln, Nebraska. And that is why our republic incorporated an electoral college.
So, my concern is the loss of the republic. I won't be hearing that on the news though. No all I'm going to hear is a bunch of rhetoric about our "democracy." Keep saying that word enough and you can change the meaning of it. That's something the media has become quite adept at doing. When you start calling abortion on demand healthcare, I'd say you have changed the meaning. When democracy means, the minority gets their way, I'd say you have changed the meaning. I'd go as far as saying you have erased the word republic from the political dialogue. The majority has to rule. That doesn't make the majority racists.
The majority will generally vote for whatever they feel is of benefit to them. That is the saddest testament of humanity. Regardless of all our grandiose ideals and promises, despite any profession and confessions of religious beliefs and doing the right thing, we will vote for what benefits us. When something no longer benefits us, we reject that, we abandon that and declare it obsolete. It's old fashioned, out of date and needs to be changed. That is how that goes and how it will always go. The race or creed of the majority will not affect that. Race and creed are not systemic in our republic. They never have been. It has always been, what's best for business. It always will be.

participating?

Today is the big day. A solar eclipse is going to take place and the sheeple are gathering in flocks! I have been around long enough to have seen a few eclipses. Never have I seen such a fuss being made. It's been non-stop reporting for over a week now. All the experts weighing in, all the warnings issued and watch parties organized. The sale of "eclipse"glasses has broken records. There can be no lawsuits for solar retinopathy, everyone has been warned and informed! The excitement is reaching fever pitch.
As I listened to all of this going on and reading the reports of hotels/motels being sold out to those wanting to view this event, I had to question why. As I said I've been around a while and never have I seen such a reaction to an event that happens on a regular basis. It happens twice every year. Yes, every six months this will happen and will be observable somewhere on the earth. You don't hear about people flying all over the world to view this function of the solar system but this time, at least here in the eastern part of the country the people are gathering like moths to the flame.
Why? Well, I think it is the sheeple effect. Many were conditioned to respond like that with the whole covid thing and the subsequent vaccines, boosters and new formulations. Do as you are told, without question, and do it again and again. The media has hyped this so much there are those that feel compelled to participate. And that is the thing, participation. Today those that participate are rewarded! The contribution you make isn't nearly as important as the fact that you participated. Bravo Zulu on your compliance. Oh, it's a harmless thing you say, viewing the eclipse and I won't argue with that. It is harmless to view a celestial event and perhaps see something you will never see again in your lifetime. That isn't what concerns me. What concerns me is how easily the masses are being directed, herded and convinced of the necessity to participate.
We are living in a world full of conspiracies. It is getting difficult to separate fact from fiction. I read where another container ship lost power and was headed for a major bridge in New York, it's a nefarious plan by some group, possibly Maga Americans! Or it could be the Democrats seeking to get Biden reelected by any means necessary. This eclipse is just another part of a larger conspiracy. The world will go dark, the solar panels all failing, and we don't have enough strategic oil reserves to compensate. Get out there and watch that eclipse but be sure to be safe about it. You must participate in this event to understand this event. The astrological implications of this eclipse happening at this time in history is staggering. Well, it's not like we didn't see it coming. It's like climate change, it happens over time, every time, and if it didn't that would be a real problem.
What this is all about is control. It's an exercise in how easily the media, on all platforms, can influence and direct the response of the population. The importance of that control cannot be underestimated or ignored. It isn't anything new, not a twenty first century concept. Calvin Coolidge: “Wherever despotism abounds, the sources of public information are the first to be brought under its control.” There was also this: Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, the control of information that enabled the participation of thousands in an ideology that was pure evil. Yes, the people were "enlightened" weren't they. They certainly complied with the directives whether they believed the ideology or not. It's just an eclipse, right? Is it? What is it that they don't want you to see? That's what you need to think about before staring into the sun.

a degree

Was up late last night watching WrestleMania. I was up until after eleven! I haven't done that in quite a while, and being sober when I did to boot! I see this advertisement about becoming your parents all the time, not sure what they are advertising, but I'm turning into my grandparents! I still got up at my regular time, about 4, although I feel an early nap coming on. As a result, my thoughts are a bit slow in coming and my fingers slow in typing. Well, they are always slow in typing. At my fastest three or four fingers gets involved.
I had read where Biden wants to forgive student loans again and part of that whole debate. I left my comment on that again as well. If you borrow the money you have to pay it back, that's the bottom line as far as I'm concerned. I can see no justification for having those that didn't borrow the money paying for a product others received. I will say that I would support some sort of legislation limiting the amount of interest charged. I'm not real familiar with the whole process and what rules are currently in place regarding that.
Still, you read the loan, you agreed to the interest, and it is up to you to pay that money back. You made that choice. You wanted the product and agreed to the price. If that product fails to produce the results you had hoped for, that isn't the fault of the product. You may indeed have buyer's remorse but that doesn't mean you are forgiven. I've financed a few things that I wasn't happy about afterwards but still had to pay for them. That's how a loan works. And yes, sometimes it takes years to pay it back.
Why do people go to college? It is to further their education, isn't it? To obtain that piece of paper that will entitle you to a larger starting salary than those that do not have that paper. That's the belief anyway. You go to further your education and skill set to begin a little higher up the ladder. You feel like that degree is a certificate of entitlement. That is also why you are willing to take out a loan to obtain that, it's an investment in the future. Then reality strikes when you realize that investment just isn't paying like you thought it would. Turns out thousands of other people have that paper too. Turns out there really aren't many jobs in philosophy or gender studies. Turns out that you perceived value isn't anyway near what the actual world is willing to pay. You have a debt to pay! And not only that your employer doesn't care what loan(s) you have, they will not structure your compensation taking that into account.
I'm old enough to remember when a high school diploma counted for something. Not everyone had one of those. You were obviously someone that could finish the job. It was proof of your character. Someone an employer could count on. Then having a degree got to be a big deal, even a two year one. That was viewed in a favorable light much like that high school diploma was. But today, well, today having a degree means little in the big picture. They are a dime a dozen. Shoot I can get one online for a reasonable fee.
Having that college degree is a prerequisite instead of the accomplishment. The same way a tradesman is compensated, ability and experience are valued more than participation.  Many getting that degree, subsequently complaining about having to pay back the loan because they aren't making that six figure salary they were expecting are just disappointed. They feel like they participated and should therefore get the prize! Doesn't really work like that. Simply buying a degree does not guarantee success. Simply being in debt for that degree doesn't entitle you to forgiveness of the debt. And that's the bottom line, the contractual obligation you agreed to when borrowing the funds. That degree does give you a measure of entitlement, a leg up so to speak, but you still have to climb the ladder. It isn't a degree of entitlement!  You have to earn that, not finance it.
