Did you know it is almost always wrong to defend the status quo? Yup, did some research on the internet about that and that was my conclusion. Look up some quotes from famous authors, essays and other references and that is what you will find. The status quo is a bad thing! I admit I was rather amazed by that. I really did expect to find an argument for maintaining the status quo but that wasn't the case at all. I'll tell you, made me pause and think. Then I reached a conclusion about all of that. It doesn't make you seem very smart when you just agree with others. No, in order to create that perception you need to either present a new idea yourself, or agree with whatever new ideas are being presented at the moment. Yes, being progressive. And that is what I think is going on there. Having written that statement you can now make the argument that is what I am doing here. I'm presenting a new idea contrary to what the majority seem to think. And, not only that, I don't have a college education or fame of any kind. I'm not a politician or an activist. Now, am I someone to listen to? If you went by the status quo, I'm not.
The status quo, a Latin phrase meaning the existing state of affairs. It particularly applies to social and political issues. The status quo is the current social structure including our value system. And why do people always want to change the status quo? Well, I'd say it was a simple thing really. By changing the status quo they can now do the things they want to do without facing any backlash from the society in which they are living. I don't think you need any advanced degrees or specialized training to figure that out. If I wish to practice a certain behavior which is contrary to current " social standards " ie: the status quo, I need to convince others that it should be changed. That, that behavior should be the norm. It is nothing more than the removal of a restriction. Isn't that the real issue here? I just want to be able to do what I want. And that is the reason I'm against the status quo. Seems quite obvious to me.
Who are the ones always advocating for these changes? They're everyone is the answer. That's because everyone wants things their own way. Each of feel we exist within a unique set of circumstances. Indeed we are all different in some regard. I can't argue with that logic. I'm no different than anyone else, I want things my way. Do I fight against the status quo? Certainly, because I advocate, in many instances, for the maintaining of the status quo. That is because I am a conservative person by nature. We tend to think of that in political terms these day, at least that is the term applied, it went by other names in the past. We have had the Whigs, Tories, and others but today we have conservatives and liberals. They are throwing a few newer names around, libertarians, socialist democrats and the green party. In fact there are currently 32 recognized parties eligible for the ballot. And each one wants to change the status quo.
The fascinating thing about all of this is, we all want to change the status quo, yet, when we get older we fight to change it back to the way it was before we changed it! The Latin phrase for that is, Status Quo Ante. The literal translation being, " the state in which before." Probably the reason we say to Ante up in a poker game. We place our bet ( ante up ) and risk what we had before in the hopes of gaining more. We want to win. When we lose, we wish we could take it back. But just like life, you can't take it back. Once the bet is made, the cards dealt, you must play the hand out. If the hand doesn't yield satisfactory results, it's someone else's fault! That's what we will say. Admit it, you know you will. Still it is the nature of man to say, " nothing ventured, nothing gained. " There are those that go " all in " every time. That's the current thinking. And that is why the status quo is always wrong, there is always hope. Hope for you and for me. It is really dependent upon what we hope for! Then, how do we get that?
