Commercial Calender

I had occasion to go to the local Walmart, something I try to avoid, and couldn't help but notice a big section of bare shelving. Having been to the Walmart before, and becoming accustomed to the commercialism on display there, I immediately realized they were setting up their back to school displays ! Checking the date I see it is already the 6th of July. Yes, it is time to start buying supplies. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that there are no more holidays until labor day in September. We do have to push for something !
Is it a benefit to the parents or a burden ? I mean the children will soon start wanting the book bags and various supplies on display. Is this an opportunity to spread the cost out over time or just an excuse to have the kids bug you ? I understand the cost of supplies is significant. Many teachers require specific things, I do not necessarily agree with it all but, that is not the point. Walmart, along with many others, will utilize this time to maximize profits. As soon as they are available they will be posting supply lists from the schools themselves. They do it here and I'm sure they do elsewhere, as a "service " to their guests. That's another thing that bugs me, don't call me your guest, I don't charge my guests.
There was a time when labor day signaled the white sales. It just isn't as popular now. I expect it is partly because we do not follow convention as closely as in the past. As a result there is little profit to be made from the white sale so we just skip over that. Let's charge into the Halloween and Thanksgiving sales after we return to school. Those are the warm ups for the biggy. It is not far off my friends ! One hundred seventy three days to be exact. Better get started.
