Thoughts and the composition of words. Often times it is difficult to marry the two. The selection of the word, in context with the thought, it what completes the thought. I believe a good composition is like a good conversation, only the conversation is with oneself. When others can, " listen " to that conversation you have been successful. I should say, listen and understand the conversation. I prefer brevity in speech and composition. I like to get to the point. An adage is one of my favorite vehicles for expression. I also enjoy the quotes of others, brief moments of very lucid thinking. Those with a quick wit, and a sarcastic bent, tend to amuse me the most. That is true even when I am the object of that sarcasm. It does give one pause.
Impulsive thoughts often hold the greatest truths. Those thoughts can also do the greatest harm. That happens because of the choice of words and the composition of the message. The validity of the statement is often unchanged by waiting a little bit, but a softening of the blow is accomplished. It is when we modify the thought with unnecessary words that the message can get garbled. By adding fluff the message is muffled.
Now, well considered thoughts and choices in vocabulary can provide a great deal more clarity but lose the reader or listener. The journey to the thought gets tedious and uneventful. Little sparks of light need to be provided along the way. These little sources of enlightenment should be pieces of the thought. Many interject other concepts into the discussion and muddy the path. It does become harder to follow. A popular choice these days to add that spark is interjecting strong, offensive and brief words of a descriptive nature. These words seldom bear any relevance to the topic. Nouns used as adjectives do not lend action to the composition but can serve as a distraction.
As with most everything a balance must be achieved. This balance is what holds our interest. Which way is the statement or thought going ? Will I agree or disagree ? The perfect balance causes others to consider. Well balanced thoughts can go either way. Will my thoughts tip that balance ? I hope so because that is the purpose of writing or expressing those thoughts. No two of us think exactly alike. Oh, we may agree in principle on many subjects, but how we arrive at the conclusion may be quite different. It is our attempt at being understood. That was summed up nicely by whomever first said, " actions speak louder than words. " I agree. Actions are the result of thought. It is the thought that counts. A thought without action holds little value for me. I think that is why I write. I have thoughts and need to act upon them. I hope I include some bits of enlightenment along the way. Can I tip the balance ? What if the action is the words ? Isn't that what happened 238 tears ago today ? Fifty six men signed a document ; of words married to thought, and declared a nation independent. Now that is action. Pretty good words and an excellent composition.
