It's a frequent saying, we hear it all the time, America, love it or leave it. It's a sentiment I agree with wholeheartedly. Yesterday, possibly for the first time, I questioned just what is America? That is what we are told to love but how to define that. That is central to the question isn't it? Really just what is America? Is it a dream as some would say or is it reality? I'd have to say it is more dream than reality. At least the portion of America that I love is. The land of the free and the home of the brave. You do have to be brave to live free! Perhaps it is that reality that is being lost. I mean how brave do to you have to be to be dependent upon government for everything? When government becomes a safety net, funded by the taxpayers, are we really free?
When I speak of dependence I mean not solely financial dependence. I am talking about obtaining permission for just about everything and anything you wish to do. Government is controlling our lives and that isn't freedom. Government is restricting our freedom! No longer can you venture into the wilderness and carve out a piece for yourself and your family. The government owns 640 million acres of land. Let that number set in, 640 million acres, about 28% of the total area of the United States , not counting Alaska. That figure is in stark contrast to what the Constitution says. The government is only supposed to own enough land to erect buildings for government and military installations. That's about it. Look it up, So just how come the government owns so much land? Just how did that happen? It's about control.
Yes I agree we need government. You can't have a nation without laws and ultimate authority. There are those members of society that need restraining. Anyone from the extremely wealthy to the mentally disturbed can create problems. Not all people are moral and virtuous. I know, but that is what we expect from an American. That is this dream we call America. In America the population is a moral and virtuous peoples! And that is where the dream ends. How do you define what is moral, what is virtuous? In America we say, In God we Trust, and that is an affirmation of our moral standard. I would say that is being dismissed in modern times, replaced by what? Where do we place out trust? In the law, in government?
I offer no answers. I only offer my thoughts. America, Love it or Leave it. The question is; what is " it. " Is America freedom or security? Is it both? What is freedom? What is security? What is America? I believe America is the grand experiment in human nature. We have been given all the proverbial rope we want. Looks to me like we are going to hang ourselves with it. When Government replaces God, America will be lost. And I say that because I think too many fail to understand what God is. God is moral and virtuous behaviors. Those behaviors stem from nature and as Thomas Jefferson stated, natures God. You can't explain God. The challenge we face is to have government co-exist with God. That's the dream; always was. That is what brought us here in the first place.
