Fire them all

The news reports there are over 380,000 government workers furloughed, and 500,00 working without pay. What they haven't reported is that all those employees furloughed can apply for unemployment benefits. Of course the big issue there is if they receive those benefits they will have to return it when they get paid. Those workers will all be paid. Yes, even the ones furloughed. In Maryland 637 have filed for unemployment benefits and 300 have filed in Colorado. They also fail to mention that the 380,000 furloughed workers are considered non-essential. Seems like a significant number to me, I mean, to be non-essential. If they are non-essential what does that make them? Nice to have would be my guess. I wonder how many private corporations employ non-essential people.
Oh I realize these non-essential people perform jobs like emptying the trash cans, running errands for the politicians, and that sort of thing. They do perform a function, it is just that we can do without them. That's why they are labeled non-essential. If we consider that the federal government employs about 2 million people and about 380,000 are non-essential that means nearly 2% are not essential. That means one in every fifty!  How much money is that? I don't have any figures for that but I'm betting it is a significant amount of money.
Now you have to ask yourself why is the government shut down? The answer is, because the ones that are still getting paid can't agree on a budget. These are the same folks that have been on vacation over the holidays and just recently returned to Washington. Well, not all of them, because apparently all of them are not essential until it is time to vote. You know, like the American taxpayer. Schumer, Pelosi and a few others are speaking for the entire Democratic vote. I wonder if that is what all Democrats intended when voting for their representative? I know when I voted for my candidates that wasn't my intent, to have three or four speak on my behalf. I didn't vote for my candidate to be non-essential until it was time to take a vote.
Regardless of what party you affiliate yourself with, this is unacceptable. The President insists upon funding for a border wall. The opposition insists they will not fund it. So the question is, who's to blame? They are all to blame is the answer. I want to know why all our representatives are not in " Congress " and actively debating this issue? Isn't that the purpose of a Congress? According to the Capital visitors website the purpose is, " through legislative debate and compromise, the U.S. Congress makes laws that influence our daily lives. "  If Congress can not reach a compromise it is interesting to note that President Trump can fund the border wall using executive power. That's correct and agreed upon by experts in such matters. Yes, he can just use his executive power to do that without congressional approval. The big question is, will he? I don't have an answer to that but am aware it is a possibility.
I wonder how those 880,000 workers affected by this shutdown feel about all of this. I wonder if they feel like pawns in a bigger game? I know I would. The ones that are my bosses, the ones controlling my paycheck don't seem a bit concerned about that. The concern isn't for the workers, after all those same bosses labeled them non-essential, the concern is solely what the party wants. I question if they really listen to what the American people want. Strange how if a private corporation is going bankrupt or closing its' doors and that business employs a significant number of people the government steps in and bails them out or otherwise provides for the workers in some fashion. Well not that strange really, those workers are essential! Essential to getting votes anyway. People really like free stuff and tend to favor the party providing that.
I remember when then President Jimmy Carter ( D ) loaned Chrysler corporation 1.5 billion dollars, no problem, no big debate about that. Obama bailed out General Motors, no problem, no big debate. Of course when all the government owned shares of General Motors were sold the government lost 10.5 billion and another 1.2 Billion on Chrysler. No shutdown though, no big debate. Interesting stuff isn't it. But now the President wants 5 billion to secure our border and it's just too much money! The Dems did offer a stipend as a gesture. Yeah, like putting up a picket fence to keep an elephant contained. And there is no doubt about the cost of this illegal " immigration. " Oh but we won't debate or compromise. They are non-essential workers, not important enough to cause any serious concern. Let them eat cake! Doesn't matter what party you support in all of this, what it is showing is that getting their way is more important than what the people want. I want every member of Congress in session and actively debating and compromising on this budget! That's what I, the American taxpayer is paying them to do. If they don't, fire them all!
