Trying to understand the logic behind not allowing the guard or other federal troops to curb the crime in your city. I'm trying to understand how that could be a bad thing. As I understand it the taxpayers fund all the police departments in the nation, in your state, in your town or village. The taxpayers are also paying those troops, whether they are in your city or not by the way. These troops are deployed to assist the local authorities in apprehending, detaining or otherwise preventing criminals from running amuck. So, why is that a bad thing? They are there to provide a level of security that the current police departments are unable to provide, for whatever reasons. They are there to get things under control. How is that a bad thing?
I understand how that makes the local authorities feel. No one wants to have their work questioned, that they aren't doing the job well. I've been around long enough to know the first thing you will hear is a lack of resources, tools, materials or time as the "reasons" for that job performance. We could do a lot more if we only had more people, more money and more time! Well, now you do and you're complaining about that why exactly? Because you are afraid that those paying you, the taxpayers, will quit paying you and hire others that can do the job. Man, it just doesn't look good does it. Strange how what took place on Jan 6 was an insurrection but what is happening in those cities is just peaceful protestors and some criminals acting out. We don't need any help with any of that, we have it under control. Yeah, sure you do.
An argument I often hear from these same folks is "if it only saves one life, isn't it worth it" If those troops only remove one criminal from the street, save one life, isn't that worth it. Apparently not as the cost is popularity. It is making us look bad. It isn't like the federal government is taking over the administration of the city, taking over anything at all. All those troops are doing is providing security. What we call, domestic tranquility. You really should feel safe walking the streets in your cities and towns. It is the lack of that security that precipitates sending those troops there in the first place!
How many murders are an acceptable level for a city to have? I hear those cities refusing help saying they have it all under control, they don't need any help. Chicago, for instance, has only had 262 murders so far this year, way down from last years totals. They've got that under control! By that reasoning all we need to do is wait. The murders will stop one day. In the meantime, just take cover. But setting aside the little problem of murders for a minute, riots, protests, smash and grabs, auto theft, drug dealing and corruption in general continues on unabated. Hey, murders are down though, so we don't need any help.
I hear much about the insurrection act and whether Trump, or any other president, should use that power. Many presidents have indeed used that power when they felt it was warranted. Some failed to use it fearing repercussions from the electorate, it might not be popular. It is a serious measure to have to take I understand that, but there are times when it is necessary. When you are the boss that's a part of the job, making those hard decisions. Truman famously had a sign on his desk saying the buck stops here. He was well aware of his responsibility to do what he felt best for the country and was willing to accept that accountability. When I was in the Navy we had a saying. "you know you are doing your job when you find your name on the bathroom wall" It's the same sentiment. You may not be popular, others may call you names, but you are doing your job correctly. You just can't make everyone happy! Inaction is weakness.
I'm attempting to clear a field but only have three workers and little equipment. You offer to send 100 workers, all the equipment necessary and I refuse! I've got it under control, all I need is more time. Are you trying to make me look bad! I got this. Hey, I have fewer trees and undergrowth this year than I did last year, I'm making progress. What's the hurry. Why the urgency. Only a few people are being murdered or shot. It's fine.
