I did not watch and don't recall ever watching the Grammy awards. This morning I saw a picture of Beyonce with the caption, the first black woman to win country album of the year, Cowboy Carter. I have heard Beyonce sing Jolene and it was awful. That is the extent of my knowledge regarding Beyonce, that album and that song. Looking at the picture of her I thought, hmm, long blonde hair, her skin looks tanned, certainly lighter, and she doesn't appear to be a black woman. I wonder why she isn't being called out for cultural appropriation. Looks like she is trying to be a white girl to me. That's all I'm saying. If a white girl put her hair in dreadlocks, tanned her skin to a deep brown color and started singing soul music that is what would be said, no doubt about that. But I get it, we don't do that in the "woke" world because we never say what we really think, only what has been approved. I just question who is the authority?
Well when it comes to getting a Grammy that is voted on by your friends. Only those actively involved in the recording business can vote on a Grammy. And, I've read, you can only vote in your area of expertise. If you are a singer you can only vote on singing, if you are a technician, you can only vote on that. There is no impartiality involved with any of that. It's like the Oscars where the actors and actresses vote for themselves or their friends. Hey, they're the experts. Ask me about blogging, allow me a vote for best blogger, and see who wins. But Beyonce wins the award for best country album and album of the year. The experts calling it "genre bending" Yeah kind of like "gender bending" I suppose. Virtue signaling on the highest level. Look at us, we are completely unbiased and hold no prejudice towards anyone or anything. Why, we give that stuff awards! So totally deserving. I heard that is was Shaboozy approved! So country. I wonder what Charlie Pride would have to say about all of this.
The fact is I really don't care who wins what. It doesn't affect my life in any way. I'm just an old guy living in the past. I enjoy the old country music along with the blues, some rock and roll and an occasional pop song. I'm no expert on anything related to music except what I like to listen to. I don't play any instruments, although I did strum on a guitar for many years, never learned how to play it though, I'm just not musically inclined at all. What I am inclined to do is offer my opinion. I have a lot of them and I share them freely. That is my gift to the world. As with all gifts, it is up to the one receiving it to appreciate and embrace it. I was raised with that old Bible verse, paraphrased, it is better to give than to receive. That's why I give my opinion, but don't listen to others. I'm just doing what is best. In my opinion, Beyonce is trying to be a white girl while enjoying the "advantages" of being black. Don't want to lose that edge. If she hadn't won, it would have been because of that, no doubt. But the Grammys' avoided that problem. Congratulations, an amazing achievement. It was a win-win!
