This being labor day I thought to wrote a bit of my opinion on Unions. Labor day is the day to celebrate the working men and women of this nation. Non-binary or others can celebrate in February. But I was just thinking about how unions have changed things. What was started as a good thing, a win for the working man, has evolved into a nothing more than a Ponzi scheme. The union leadership are the ones ultimately enjoying the benefits from the working people. Yes those "in the union" often feel like they are getting something from all of that, convinced they are so much better off, it's a guarantee of success. And that is the beginning of the problem. As long as you continue to contribute to "paying the boss" you get to keep your job. It's a scam and a scheme. You are being told when, where and how to work. Unions are like gangs, do as they are told, rough up the competition when necessary and extort money from everyone else. The median price of an automobile today is 35,000 dollars! You can thank unions for that.
The first union established in the united states was by cordwainers. Yes, cordwainers. They are people that worked with leather; cobblers, saddle makers, harness makers those types of jobs. That was in 1794. The reason was the same as today, wages and working hours. They just wanted to be treated fairly and paid according to their skill. Certainly reasonable enough but a far cry from what unions have become today. Unions today are basically extorting money! That's what strikes are all about. They really aren't about what is fair or equitable, they are demands for more. The only defense now being a boycott! Yes, now the average everyday worker can only combat those unions by a mutual boycott of the product being produced. We don't stand much of a chance. The unions are driving up the price of goods and services and then demanding higher wages and benefits so they can afford to purchase those goods and services. The ultimate goal being a socialist state. The workers work for the leadership who then decides what you can and can not have, do, say or produce. An Oligarchy! That's what a union really is.
Unions are really for those that whose primary concern is for themselves. It's all good as long as they are getting higher wages and more benefits. What the cost does to others isn't a consideration at all. You can join the union, pay your dues, and become a member of the club. Then you will do as you are told, and only do what you are told to do. Of course you have to continue paying your dues, work your way up the ladder, maybe even become the boss! But unless you are politically connected you aren't getting too far, you have to play the game. Like rival gangs you must cooperate with the other unions in fixing prices, rates and make the deals. And don't forget, if others in your gang go on strike, you have to pay them while they do so. Not only that you must intimidate and threaten anyone that even thinks about doing that job! Scabs are to be stopped at all costs! You either work for the gang, or you don't work at all!
The initial idea, the concept of a union was a great idea. It still is. The problem is what unions have become. Through greed they have morphed into nothing more than labor cartels. They keep the prices high and limit the competition. That's the very definition of a cartel. That isn't what a union is supposed to do. A union is supposed to negotiate in good faith with the employer. The objective being to work together to produce those goods and services for the mutual benefit of everyone, even those not in the union. But the unions became self centered and greedy, making ever increasing demands and excluding others. Unions have become so politically connected as to control the very functions of government. Unions are now designed to reward those that cooperate. Individual talent and integrity are not the most valuable attributes to have in a union. Only loyalty to the union will be rewarded! All others will be crushed.
You try to work, take our job and this is what will happen! It's only fair.

Be glad that you never worked 18 hours a day in a firetrap sweatshop for 50¢ an hour.
ReplyDeleteIf you had belonged to the worst union, you would at least own a home, have a washer and dryer, and not pay your life away to The Man…
