This morning I can't decide what amuses me the most, liberals defending the 2nd amendment or Trump changing the name back to the Department of War. Of course, both of these current issues were created by Trump as he pulls the chain of those on the left. I'm convinced a great deal of what he says and does is designed for that sole purpose. Following the tragic shooting of children in a church he suggests that transgender people should not be allowed to purchase firearms. The left immediately responds with cries of, the second amendment, the second amendment, you can't restrict the rights of people to purchase firearms! No protests in the streets screaming for a ban on firearms this time, no sir, we must defend the second amendment! In fact, it has been noticeably quiet.
Now as far as reverting back to the original name Department of War, I can see why he would suggest that. It was changed to avoid offending voters back in 1947. Remember WW2 had only ended two years prior to that and people really didn't want to hear about war. The first world war was supposed to be the war to end all wars but that peace only lasted for twenty one years. But we had dropped the "bomb" in WW2 and surely that would be the end of all wars, a department of war wasn't necessary, just a department of defense, just in case someone started something, we weren't going to be surprised again, not like Pearl harbor.
Are we shifting to an offensive policy? I'd say that is the general idea, a show of strength. Actions do speak louder than words. We destroyed a boat laden with drugs bound for our streets. I'm quite certain the intel was extensive and there was no doubt about the intent of that boatload of terrorists and thugs. A message has been sent! Reminds me of the time Reagan bombed Gaddafi in retaliation for the bombing of a west Berlin disco. Forty Libyan casualties resulted. Never heard much from Gaddafi after that, he got the message! Hopefully those Venezuelan drug cartels get the message and that will be that. Still, a show of strength and resolve is often required. You can't talk your enemies to death, well unless you send Whoopi Goldberg over there.
It will take congress to change the name permanently, as permanent as it gets anyway. Trump is just throwing stuff at the wall, the wall being the left, more to annoy them than anything else. Look the truth is easy to see and understand. Trump does have that massive ego, he does have that New York state of mind. Ambition, optimism and hustle defines New York City and Trump is all that. That being said, he isn't concerned about his legacy, that has already been firmly established. And Trumps does realize it is like PT Barnum famously said, there is no such thing as bad publicity. For Trump the importance lies in his name being mentioned. He really doesn't care if you like him or not! And he delights in what we call "trolling" the left. When I was young we called that needling. Just a little pin prick to get your attention, annoy and upset you. It often gains you an advantage as well. Doesn't hurt when you have backup either, like control of the house and senate. Don't you just hate it when the bully has more friends than you?
You do have to remember that all of this is made possible by the constitution of the United States. I know, it stinks when it goes against your wishes. But our republic was established by the people, for the people. It would be a big mistake to begin rewriting that constitution. I believe that is understood by the majority. That is why there are only 27 amendments to that document. The first ten were added rather quickly and as a package deal. They were concessions made after the fact, when the initial fervor had calmed down just a bit. Interesting isn't it, that only one amendment was ever repealed, the 18th. We the people wanted our drinks! Lawlessness and crime forced that repeal. Yes, basically a national protest and crime syndicates made that happen. The people have spoken.
