Ten years ago on this day I posted this question to Facebook: Do we perceive reality, or is reality just a perception? I received a few comments and emojis. There was no big philosophical discussion that followed. One person did comment if I found the answer to let them know. This morning I'm thinking about that once again. I still don't have a firm opinion of just what way that goes. I have become convinced however that the "academics" in this country have made a choice. It appears they have decided that reality is whatever they perceive it to be. The only challenge left to them is to create the science to match those perceptions. It's the only way I can think of to justify a great deal of what I'm hearing.
Affirming. That is the watch word of today. We should all affirm the perceptions of others, see what they see. But beyond that, we have to accept those perceptions as the reality. You are not supposed to question that anymore, challenge that reality in any fashion, just affirm it. I remember when the objective of mental health care was to cure the illness. Today, that isn't the case at all, just provide affirming care. In other words, buy into the delusion. If you feel like a cat, you're a cat and there is nothing wrong with that! So, the therapy received is designed to make you feel validated. The overall objective is to transform society in general. We are calling that being inclusive. That means simply allowing behaviors that we know to be fantasies and delusional as another's reality. You shouldn't attempt to impose your perception of reality on others! Well, unless of course you have the science to back you up that is.
Science fiction has often become science fact. That can't be denied or ignored. Science is nothing more than attempting to find the explanation. There are plenty of things you can know, for a fact, that can't be explained. The creation of life as we know it being on top of that list. The age old question, why are we here? You can't deny that we are here but the why of it is still a mystery. But with science to back us up, we can implement whatever reality is the most expeditious to our goals. That is where the word "mandates" are allowed to enter the discussion. Mandates can be issued with science as the authority. You can't dispute science. When you can make science fiction, science fact, you will have gained control. That even applies when the only thing you change is the visual perception of the object in question. A lot of that going on these days.
One of the most popular scientists today is Neil degrasse Tyson. He really hasn't done much in the way of actual science however, but he is what we would call viral today. He has written several books, gives speeches and lectures, has been in television sitcoms and often quoted. One of his more famous quotes is, "The good thing about science is it is true whether or not you believe in it." What he is really saying is, believing in his "truth" because he has the science to back it up. Thing is, belief requires no proof, and that Mr. Tyson is the truth.
Immanuel Kant the great German philosopher said, "Science is organized knowledge, Wisdom is organized life." Did you pick up on the difference between those two statements? The scientist and the philosopher. Einstein did a bit of philosophizing as well. Well beyond all his actual scientific achievements he made this succinct statement: "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." Yeah, Einstein was cool like that. What he was talking about was science concerns the physical world whereas religion is concerned with the moral and spiritual aspects of life.
Do we perceive reality, or is reality just a perception? I queried the internet, the all knowing data base in the clouds and one answer that came back was this statement: Perception is Not Reality. Just because you think something is reality doesn't make it reality. (Jim Taylor Phd ) Here's the link to that article. Perception Is Not Reality | Psychology Today I'm guessing that guy won't be getting any awards anytime soon. As for me, I still don't have a definitive answer. I'm pretty sure I can perceive when someone is delusional, I don't require any science to affirm that perception. The proof is out there!
